Rumours have been circulating over the Internet propagating allegations that the Alliance and Gully Side have been at odds since the Quad shooting incident. Allegations are that Alliance members blame Mavado for bringing Bounty Killer's birthday party to a premature end.

Following the spread of the alleged rift, Mavado's manager, Julian Jones-Griffith, attempted to clear the rumours via his Twitter page @AllianceJamaica.

According to Jones-Griffith, Alliance and Gully Side members are family and there is no rift between the two entities.

He further told THE STAR that Mavado has no grouse with the Alliance, and rubbished any rumour that suggested otherwise.

However, a song circulating over the Internet called Mash Up Everything, allegedly done by Gully Side member Chase Cross, tells a different story.

The artiste throws lyrical punches at the Alliance making mention of Bounty Killer's party, and swearing allegiance to Gully Side.

In the song the artiste says "A nuh chat dem fi chat, tell dem fi touch wi, a talk bout wi mash up dem party," supposedly hinting at Bounty Killers birthday party.

The song continued, "Yu ova desso with yu long mouth, betta watch the words wey come out yu long mouth, dem and dem freaky bossy, eye get red from the mansion wi start it ...,"he said.

According to Jones-Griffith, the song was a mistake by the young artiste which was not intended to be released.

Griffith claims that the song was leaked by the studio engineer who is unknown. He also said that reasoning about the matter will bring a positive result.

THE STAR contacted Austin Kevin Green, the CEO of Payday music, rumoured to be the producer of the song.

According to Green, he has nothing to do with the song. "I would never produce a song like that, I am like the mediator of Gulliance, I'm the engineer and producer for both artistes. Bounty Killer started out all of us, I would be a mad man to do that," he said.

According to the shocked producer, he would never do a song to disrespect any of his friends.

"Nobody expected this and the world is shocked, even people in Switzerland a call because they expect better from the Gulliance," he said.

The Gulliance producer says that even if he was approached by Chase Cross to do the song, he would have declined because he interacts well with everybody.

Manager of the Alliance Next Generation, Cross Cris, told The STAR that he could not confirm that there is a rift, and since Bounty Killer and Mavado have not come public to say that there is such, nobody should perpetuate that claim. He also said there might have been discontent between persons but not a rift.

Chase Cross was unavailable for comment, however, his manager, David Hunter, told The STAR that Chase Cross was just expressing his feelings in response to the negative comments that were being made by members of the Alliance after his friend's death.

Mavado and Bounty Killer are yet to make any public comment on the matter.

FDA approval is a big deal for medical device manufacturers. Reflexonic is celebrating the recent approval of its Viberect device, a gadget designed to tackle the issue of erectile dysfunction.

The device's name offers a clue to how it works. It's a handheld device that stimulates the penile nerves with vibrations sent through medical softpads. It's battery-operated. This all may sound familiar. Essentially, it's a high-tech vibrator for men (but we're not sure how the "it's a back massager" explanation will go over, guys).

croppedReflexonic3_270x249.jpg

Anyone who has been hit by the potential side effects ascribed to pills like Viagra and Cialis may find the Viberect to be a welcome alternative. It doesn't require popping pills or getting injections.

There are no side effects listed for the Viberect as long as users stick to the operation manual. That means one application per day for less than 10 minutes.

The $300 Viberect is available by prescription only with sales getting underway in the middle of August. So far, no health insurance providers are covering the device.

This video of the device has visuals on par with a progressive high school sex ed class, so keep that in mind before you click on it at work

Phyllis Siegal, 76, and Connie Kopelov, 84, were married in a chapel at the city clerk's office as a crowd of onlookers cheered.

The two, of New York, have been together for 23 years. Kopelov left the clerk's office in a wheelchair, but used a walker to approach reporters.

"Your cheers are wonderful," Siegal told well-wishers outside the office.

She told reporters the experience was "just so amazing. It's the only way I can describe it."

Western Bureau:Dancehall star Mavado left an indelible imprint on Reggae Sumfest's Dancehall Night.

Mavado created musical ecstasy at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Centre in Montego Bay with a dazzling performance, befitting his emerging superstar status.

Hitting centre stage at 5:08 a.m, the relaxed-looking singjay simply took charge, feeding the appreciative fans with hit after hit, to include songs such as So Special, Hope and Pray, Messiah and Nuh Fraid A Dem, which created quite a buzz among the fans.

Initially ending his performance after belting out Nuh Fraid A Dem, the crowd demanded more and he promptly complied with the first of his two encores.

He all but brought the house down; wreaking havoc with General, Don't Cry, Gyal A Mad Ova and One by One, which was done in combination with Morgan Heritage's Laza Morgan.

With the crowd giving him much, a busty female member of the audience decided to join Mavado on the stage and she soon had him fully engaged, delivering an erotic-looking dance on her. Shortly after, the singjay began giving away items of his clothing to the audience. Soon his jacket, his undershirt, shoes and socks were all gone.

Clearly satisfied that he had made his mark, Mavado unleashed his latest hits, Pepper and the thought-provoking Delilah, before again exiting the stage.

second encore

He was again called for a second encore and delivered Me Did Tell Youand Star Boy.

Had the sizzling Mavado not been in such a clinical mood, the night's honours could well have gone to the likes of the compelling I-Octane, an excellent Assassin or the very impressive Khago, who advertised his readiness for the global stage with complete authority.

As is now customary, I-Octane's versatility and charisma were fully reflected in songs like My Life, Lose a Friend and Puff It, which were all well received.

Assassin, who utilised his intelligence and ever-expanding catalogue to good effect, was quite brilliant, especially in his delivery of Nothing At All, Run The Place and Jah Guide and Protect.

Khago was a revelation, as he attacked the big stage with unbelievable authority.

Firecrackers decorated the night skies as appreciative fans reacted with total glee to songs like Cyaa Cool, Struggle, *la*hd A Boil, No Boy and his breakout hit, Nah Sell Me Out Friend Dem.

While the huge crowd, arguably the largest seen at the venue in many years, waited to see Vybz Kartel close the show, one sensed it was more out of curiosity, with his new 'colouring-book appearance', than any anxiety to see him perform. His performance fell flat.

In fact, Beenie Man and Bounty Killer, who both fall squarely in the deejay's dinosaur category, gave stronger performances than he did.

composed

Beenie Man, who shared his set with the likes of Pretty Kitty, Clif-twang 'Canna Cross It' Brown, and American artiste Mya, struggled at times, but with the fans showing him their customary love, he was able to compose himself enough to do justice to his set.

On the contrary, the confident Bounty Killer was robust in his delivery, stamping his class without getting cross, angry or miserable.

The women of the dancehall, to include Spice, Ikaya, Ce'Cile and Tifa, who were expected to seriously challenge the traditional male dominance of dancehall night, did well but were clearly overshadowed.

On another night, maybe Spice, who did two songs with Mya and Tifa, who was delivered onstage gift-wrapped, could well have walked away as star performers.

Among the other acts who made their mark were the likes of Zamunda, the exciting Fambo, a mature and confident-sounding Jah Vinci, the lyrical Kiprich, Konshens and Aidonia, who all managed to excite the crowd during various stages of their performances.

The fans, who came out early, got two special bonus treats in the performances of House of Leeds recording artistes Iyahblazze, who elicited non-stop screams for his songs Rasta and Woman Me Needand Foot Kartel, who continues to use his creativity to make his food-based song hilarious.

Amy Winehouse, the beehived soul-jazz diva whose self-destructive habits overshadowed a distinctive musical talent, was found dead Saturday in her London home, police said. She was 27.

The British singer's record label, Universal, confirmed her death on Saturday.

"We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer," the statement read. "Our prayers go out to Amy's family, friends and fans at this difficult time."

Winehouse shot to fame with the album "Back to Black," whose blend of jazz, soul, rock and classic pop was a global hit. It won five Grammys and made Winehouse with her black beehive hairdo and old-fashioned sailor tattoos one of music's most recognizable stars.

Police confirmed that a 27-year-old female was pronounced dead at the home in Camden Square northern London; the cause of death was not immediately known. London Ambulance Services said Winehouse had died before the two ambulance crews it sent arrived at the scene.

"I didn't go out looking to be famous," Winehouse told the Associated Press when "Back to Black" was released. "I'm just a musician."

But in the end, the music was overshadowed by fame, and by Winehouse's demons. Tabloids lapped up the erratic stage appearances, drunken fights, stints in hospital and rehab clinics. Performances became shambling, stumbling train wrecks, watched around the world on the Internet.

Born in 1983 to taxi driver Mitch Winehouse and his pharmacist wife Janis, Winehouse grew up in the north London suburbs, and was set on a showbiz career from an early age. When she was 10, she and a friend formed a rap group, Sweet 'n' Sour Winehouse was Sour that she later described as "the little white Jewish Salt 'n' Pepa."

She attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School, a factory for British music and acting moppets, later went to the Brit School, a performing arts academy in the "Fame" mold, and was originally signed to "Pop Idol" svengali Simon Fuller's 19 Management.

But Winehouse was never a packaged teen star, and always resisted being pigeonholed.

Her jazz-influenced 2003 debut album, "Frank," was critically praised and sold well in Britain. It earned Winehouse an Ivor Novello songwriting award, two Brit nominations and a spot on the shortlist for the Mercury Music Prize.

But Winehouse soon expressed dissatisfaction with the disc, saying she was "only 80 percent behind" the album.

"Frank" was followed by a slump during which Winehouse broke up with her boyfriend, suffered a long period of writer's block and, she later said, smoked a lot of marijuana.

Winehouse just latest musician to die at 27

"I had writer's block for so long," she said in 2007. "And as a writer, your self-worth is literally based on the last thing you wrote. .. I used to think, 'What happened to me?'

"At one point it had been two years since the last record and (the record company) actually said to me, 'Do you even want to make another record?' I was like, 'I swear it's coming.' I said to them, 'Once I start writing I will write and write and write. But I just have to start it.'"

'Back to Black' led to fame
The album she eventually produced was a sensation.

Released in Britain in the fall of 2006, "Back to Black" brought Winehouse global fame. Working with producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi and soul-funk group the Dap-Kings, Winehouse fused soul, jazz, doo-wop and, above all, a love of the girl-groups of the early 1960s with lyrical tales of romantic obsession and emotional excess.

"Back to Black" was released in the United States in March 2007 and went on to win five Grammy awards, including song and record of the year for "Rehab."

ARSENE WENGER joined the summer transfer spree yesterday by spending... £1million.

The Arsenal boss landed teenager Carl Jenkinson while £36m was being lashed by arch-rivals Alex Ferguson and Kenny Dalglish on Phil Jones and Jordan Henderson.

Wenger had a £16m bid for Jones, which triggered the defender's escape clause, accepted by Blackburn. But Rovers' England Under-21 star was determined to sign for champions Manchester United for the same fee.

Meanwhile Liverpool paid £20m to secure the signature of 20-year-old England midfielder Henderson from Sunderland.

Wenger was left with just Charlton's Finland Under-19 skipper Jenkinson, though it was hardly the big name Gunners skipper Cecs Fabregas and Theo Walcott are after.

Defender Jenkinson, 19, only made his Charlton debut last December aftr a loan spell at Eastbourne in the Blue Square Bet Premier earlier in the season.

He was born in Harlow but qualified for Finland through his mother.

Jenkinson said: "I hope supporters will understand why I can't turn down such an opportunity, but Charlton will always have a special place in my heart.

"I will always be in Charlton's debt for the training they have given me since a young age."

Meanwhile, Benik Afobe, Chuks Aneke and Oguzhan Ozyakup have extended their current deals with the Gunners.

Wenger, who is now already playing catch-up, also has Lille's Ivory Coast forward Gervinho, Bolton's England defender Gary Cahill and Blackburn centre-back Christopher Samba on his radar.

Seattle Sounders F.C.

vs7

Man Utd.

Seattle Sounders 0 United 7

None of Sir Alexs men will be sleepless in Seattle this evening, as United were forced to work hard on an energy-sapping pitch to procure a 7-0 victory in the Reds second US Tour clash.

The scoreline suggests a stroll in the park, but for the first 45 minutes the sides were evenly matched for long periods. Then, an explosion of second-half goals including three in four minutes put the game way out of sight.

Fitness is always the main aim during pre-season, although Sir Alex will certainly be pleased with the Reds performance and composure in front of goal during an entertaining game played before a packed and passionate CenturyLink Field.

Streamers cascaded down from the stands as the referee signalled for the game to begin and it was the home side who almost provided the fireworks in the opening minutes as fans favourite Freddy Montero twice attempted to chip Anders Lindegaard.

Unusually for a United game in pre-season, the crowd wanted the opposition to win; Seattle is the biggest soccer city in America and the Sounders the best supported side.

So they were disappointed when United took the lead, 15 minutes into the match. Ashley Young fed Patrice Evra on the overlap down the left and the defender whipped in a pinpoint cross for Michael Owen to nod home

from close range. It was the strikers second goal in as many tour games.

That signalled the start of a period of Reds dominance: Young forced a fine save from veteran goalkeeper Kasey Keller, Owen had an effort cleared off the line and Macheda, who looked particularly sharp up front, saw a header fly just past the right-hand upright.

Before half-time Montero and right-back James Riley both tested Lindegaard in the space of a few seconds but the Danish goalkeeper made two smart stops to preserve the Reds advantage.

Owen should have doubled the lead on 43 minutes when he went one-on-one with Keller but shot into the stoppers legs Michael then had the misfortune of inadvertently clearing Nanis effort off the Sounders line from the resulting corner.

Sir Alex made four changes at the break and within six minutes of the restart two of those were on the scoresheet. First, Mame Biram Diouf latched onto Nanis chipped ball before rounding substitute goalkeeper Terry Boss and firing home from a tight angle.

Then Wayne Rooney blasted into the roof of the net from eight yards after Nani had done well down the right and pulled the ball back to the waiting striker.

It wasnt all one-way traffic, though: Ben Amos, on for Lindegaard, made a flying save to deny Mike Fucito and Pat Noonan clipped the bar with a volley as Seattle continued to push forward in search of goals.

That left space at the back, which Rooney exploited on 69 minutes when he found time to control and fire, left-footed, into the far corner. Park did the same two minutes later, arriving at the back post to slot home unmarked for Uniteds fifth before Rooney swept home Obertans cross to complete a quickfire hat-trick.

The Frenchman then wrapped up the scoring himself when he burst clear and finished neatly past Boss to notch United's seventh unanswered goal. Seattle residents wont forget this game in a hurry.

United: Lindegaard (Amos 46); Rafael, Ferdinand, Vidic (Evans 56), Evra (Fabio 56); Nani (Obertan 56), Anderson, Giggs (Park 46), Young (Carrick 65); Owen (Diouf 46), Macheda (Rooney 46)

Subs not used: de Gea, Smalling, Jones, Cleverley, Welbeck

BACKHEEL penalty star Theyab Awana could be in hot water over his spot-kick antics.

The United Arab Emirates player became an internet sensation after scoring a cheeky goal against Lebanon on Sunday.

His team were leading 5-2 at the time when he slotted home from 12 yards using his heel.

Awana was booked at the time, even though the goal stood, and UAE team manager Esmaeel Rashed is ready to take his own action.

Rashed said: "This should not have happened. I think what happened is disrespectful.

"We cannot accept anyone in our team who does not respect the opponent and does not respect the people who are working, or the supporters.

"There are many forms of punishment. We could send him away from the team or we could make him pay a fine."

Rashed has spoken to Awana and claims the 21-year-old Baniyas midfielder is full of remorse for his actions.

He added: "The player, he is very sorry. He said, 'I did wrong. I made a mistake. Tell the team I'm sorry. I'm really, really sorry I did this thing'.

"In the end, he's young, but he has to know what are the good things and the bad things.

"I think he will learn from this moment. He's really, really upset and very worried.

"From when he was sitting with us today, he's blaming himself."

UAE coach Srecko Katanec was also unimpressed, immediately substituting Awana after the penalty - just 10 minutes after sending him on.

Katanec said: "This is not respect, Okay? I am unhappy. My reaction was normal - I took him out."

Mavado teams up with DASECA

Since trumpeting Mavados arrival on the Dancehall scene in 2005 with Real McKoy on their Anger Management riddim, boutique record label DASECA Productions has consistently found hit records with the Gully Gad. Dont Wana Be a Memory on their Category 5 riddim continues to rise and their last single with Mavado, When You Feel Lonely, went #1 on BBC 1Xtra in UK and many charts around the world, as well as selling successfully.
Mavado appeared on New Yorks #1 radio station HOT 97 Sunday night for his historic first interview on his return to the US after a 15 month absence, when Bobby Konders and Jabba gave the latest DASECA-produced offering Gyal Wine, its world premiere. Footage of the interview can be found on HOT 97s website:

When Konders and Jabba dropped the song it was an instant hit and a radio rip of the track went viral almost immediately, heightening anticipation for the tracks release. The wait is now over as the song has been released to select radio jocks and sound system selectors around the world, as well as being up for sale on iTunes and all digital outlets as of this Friday, July 8.

Making music with DASECA is a straight family ting, said Mavado. The musical chemistry is natural and the world seems to agree as we have made many big songs over the last 6 years. Whenever Im in the studio I always try to sound different, I dont want any of my songs to sound the same and DASECA know how to help bring that out. I know the ladies are going to love this one.

DASECA are working on new material with new protege Dexta Daps and will be releasing a new single from him in the very near future. Mavado is currently in the US negotiating with record labels and preparing for his upcoming US tour.

SOME men who are serving time in maximum-security prisons and who have tested positive for HIV/AIDS say that their medical and nutritional needs are being neglected by what they feel is an uncaring, inhumane prison system.

"I am living with HIV, you understand, but I don't want to die inside here," was the impassioned plea from an inmate to the Sunday Observer from behind the massive masonry that constitutes the walls of the maximum-security St Catherine Adult Correctional Centre in Spanish Town, the country's old capital.

As a renewed wave of 'Mavadomania' sweeps the globe, Mavado has reached No. 1 in the UK once more.

Mavado's collaboration with UK rapper Chipmunk, Every Gyal, has quickly become the hottest dancehall record in the UK hands down, creating havoc in the dances across the UK. Every Gyal has now climbed to the top of the BBC 1XTRA Dancehall Chart, where it is expected to ride the summer wave to commercial success.

Both Mavado and Chipmunk called in to Robbo Ranx's show live on BBC 1XTRA on Thursday night in a transatlantic link up to celebrate the song's success.

Produced by Dready, Every Gyal is on Chipmunk's sophomore album 'Transition' (Sony Records) that also featured Trey Songz, Keri Hilson and Chris Brown. Chipmunk has been a longtime fan of Mavado and said he didn't want his album to come out without a feature with Mavado on it. Chipmunk actually did a freestyle on Mavado's On The Rock back in 2008 that was an underground smash in the UK. The video for Every Gyal, shot in Ocho Rios earlier this year, has already got over two million views on YouTube.

Meanwhile, Mavado's hot single Delilah continues to climb sales and airplay charts in the UK, Europe and US, with high expectations for the track to also garner crossover success. New singles Wine Gyal (DASECA Productions) and Mi Did Tell Yuh on Stephen McGregor's 'Bad Acid' rhythm, look set to add to the Mavado frenzy gripping the world.

STEWART  DOWNING finally signed for Liverpool last night to end the summer's longest transfer saga.

The winger joined for £20million from Aston Villa and penned a four-year contract worth £80,000 a week.

Reds boss Dalglish flew home early from his club's Far East tour on Thursday to oversee the England international's arrival.

Downing, 26, said: "It's been a long time coming but I'm really pleased to be here.

"It will be a great feeling to run out at Anfield. The atmosphere is always great and the fans are brilliant.

"When I wanted to come to Liverpool, it was the first thing I thought of - playing at Anfield in front of those great fans. I'm really looking forward to it.

"The manager has pushed the boat out to get me here, so hopefully I can give him something back."

Aston Villa sign Shay Given from Manchester City on five-year deal.

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given from Manchester City.

The 35-year-old has signed a five-year contract at Villa Park after the clubs agreed an undisclosed fee.

New Villa boss Alex McLeish targeted the former Newcastle man after Brad Friedel moved to Tottenham.

Given told the club's website: "Aston Villa is a huge club and I'm really excited to be joining. It's a new challenge and I'm eager to embrace it."

Given had been on the margins at Eastlands after City manager Roberto Mancini made England international Joe Hart his first choice.

The Irish international will make his Villa debut in a friendly against Walsall on Thursday.

He is McLeish's first signing since taking over at Villa Park and the former Birmingham manager believes Given will have a major impact at the club.

"Shay has come here with something of a point to prove and that won't do him any harm at all," McLeish said.

"Everybody who has watched him perform over many years in the Premier League will know his pedigree so we believe we have secured the services of one of the best goalkeepers in the business."

Paraguay takes Brazil out of Copa

July 18, 2011

Julio Cesar allowed two goals in a strange penalty kick shootout.

Paraguay advanced to the Copa America semifinals on Sunday by defeating defending champion Brazil 2-0 in a penalty shootout after the score was level at 0-0 following extra time.

Paraguay goalkeeper Justo Villar stopped Thiago Silva's shot and Elano, Andre Santos and Fred also missed for Brazil, which was eliminated from the South American competition a day after host Argentina lost to Uruguay

The Argentines also lost on penalties after Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera played well in regulation and then stopped Carlos Tevez's penalty in the shootout.

Similarly, a great performance by Villar ensured Brazil failed to capitalize on its scoring opportunities despite dominating from the start.

''After the way we played today, I've never seen a more unfair result in my entire career,'' Brazil midfielder Ramires said.

It is the first time since 1989 that Paraguay has reached the final four in the South American competition.

Paraguay hasn't won any of its four matches so far. The team will now face Venezuela, which eliminated Chile 2-1 later Sunday. Uruguay and Peru, which eliminated Colombia on Saturday, will meet in the other semifinal.

''Brazil should've won after 90 minutes,'' Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino said. ''Sometimes we get these results. We played entirely differently from how we wanted to play.''

Brazil was trying to win its third straight Copa America title after having won four of the past five tournaments, and coach Mano Menezes brought a mixed squad of veterans and promising young stars to also prepare for the 2014 World Cup at home.

''It's important to keep our calm after a loss and avoid thinking that it was all negative,'' Menezes said. ''We improved after the (tough) start in the competition and we will continue working hard so we can reach the positive results in the future.''

Brazil leaves with only one win in four matches. The team drew with Venezuela and Paraguay before beating Ecuador 4-2 in the group stage.

''It's always disappointing when things don't go our way,'' Menezes said. ''We lost to a team which hasn't won a match yet and now has reached the semifinals. But that's football and we have to learn how to live with that to avoid compromising the work that we've done so far. And at the same time we have to understand what we need to do to improve from now on.''

Marcelo Estigarribia and Christian Riveros scored for Paraguay in the shootout after Villar capped his great performance by diving to his left to stop defender Thiago Silva's shot.

Thiago Silva was in doubt because of a right thigh muscle injury and made it into the lineup just before the match.

''The only thing we can do is apologize for the (missed) penalties,'' Thiago Silva said. ''There were a lot of positives during the game and we made very few mistakes.''

Brazil midfielder Elano started the shootout by missing badly over the crossbar, and Andre Santos and Fred also missed the goal.

''Brazil dominated the entire match and we had to stay back,'' Villar said. ''The penalties are a lottery. Our players did better while they failed.''

There was an altercation 11 minutes into extra time after a dispute between Brazil defender Lucio and Estigarribia near the sideline. Players from both teams were involved in the confrontation, shoving each other. Referee Sergio Pezzotta of Argentina sent off Brazil's Lucas Leiva and Paraguay's Antolin Alcaraz.

Brazil controlled possession and outplayed Paraguay from the start. The Paraguayans stayed back and relied mostly on counterattacks, but couldn't get nowhere near the Brazilian goal for most of the match.

Paraguay's first shot on target came in the 88th, when Edgar Barreto's long-range strike was deflected to allow goalkeeper Julio Cesar to make an easy save.

Paraguay forward Nelson Haedo Valdez had the only chance in extra time, just missing the far corner with a first-time shot from inside the area following a long pass by Estigarribia in the 112th.

Brazil, which outshot Paraguay 16-4, had at least five clear scoring chances in regulation, most from young striker Neymar. Villar's great performance caused Paraguay's fans to chant his name on several occasions during the match.

Villar denied Paulo Henrique Ganso in the 66th, and made another terrific stop with his feet from a close-range strike by Alexandre Pato.

Villar also stopped Brazil's best chance in the first half, blocking Lucio's shot from inside the box.

The Brazilians thought they had scored when Paraguay's Barreto cleared a header by substitute striker Fred in the 82nd, but the linesman said the ball didn't cross the line.

Neymar was replaced by Fred in the 79th minute after he apparently injured his right knee while making a cross into the area a few minutes earlier.

Paraguay played without star striker Roque Santa Cruz, who didn't recover in time from a right-leg muscle injury. He was replaced by Valdez.

Brazil played with the same 11 from the convincing victory against Ecuador in its last group match, with Maicon on the right side of the defense and Robinho in attack.

Brazil needed a last-minute equalizer in its 2-2 draw with the Paraguayans in the first stage.

NEW YORK (AP) Investigators believe an 8-year-old Brooklyn boy who was abducted and dismembered may have been tied up and tried to fight off his alleged captor before he was killed, police officials said Thursday.

At a news conference, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said the man charged in the killing, Levi Aron, had scratches on his arms and wrists a sign "there was some kind of struggle." There also were marks on the victim's remains that could have been caused by restraints, the commissioner added.

A preliminary medical examination indicates Leiby Kletzky was "smothered or suffocated," Kelly said.

Kelly also confirmed reports that Aron had given a written confession in the gruesome slaying of Kletzky, which concluded with, "I'm sorry for the hurt that I caused."

Beyond that, "He hasn't expressed any remorse," Kelly said.

Kletzky vanished late Monday afternoon after getting lost during what was supposed to have been a seven-block walk from his day camp to a meeting spot with his mother.

Investigators later used a surveillance video to trace the missing boy to Aron, a hardware supply store clerk who the boy had apparently asked for directions.

Detectives found the boy's severed feet, wrapped in plastic, in the man's freezer, as well as a cutting board and three *la*hdy carving knives. A plastic garbage bag with *la*hdy towels was nearby.

Aron also told investigators that after taking Leiby off the street and brought the boy to a wedding in the suburb of Monsey and spent several hours there Monday evening, Kelly said. Other guests at the wedding confirmed Aron was there, but didn't see the boy, the commissioner added.

The suspect told police he killed the child Tuesday in a panic after learning that a massive search was under way.

Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hays said he plans to charge Aron with felony murder, and was also investigating whether he might have had any improper contact with children in the past.

Aron's lawyer, Pierre Bazile, said he expected his client to be arraigned Thursday.

"From the Aron family, they'd like to extend their condolences to the family of the boy," he said, adding they would let the justice system work and would not make any further statements.

Fingers will point at Lionel Messi, but there are bigger culprits in Argentina's camp.

The moment that Javier Mascherano saw red, you knew the Albiceleste were in trouble. You just don't give back a man advantage without it becoming the turn in a parable - a lesson on not taking opportunities for granted.

Argentina had been given their gift when Diego Perez, the veteran Uruguay midifelder who scored his first international goal in the fifth minute, fulfilled a destiny he avoided when he only saw yellow for a second minute. That was a red card offense, though the match official, Carlos Armarilla DeMarqui, disagreed. Three minutes later, Perez put Uruguay ahead, but when the official again reached for his yellow in the 38th minute, Perez gave the hosts a paved path to the semifinals.

By that time, Gonzalo Higuain had equalized, and with Argentina controlling the tempo throughout much of the match, only some heroics fromCeleste `keeper Fernando Muslera kept Sergio Batista's team from translating their control into goals.

And so stood the match in the 86th minute when Mascherano, Argentina's captain, decided to give his team's gift back. The match was still 10 minutes from the whistle that would end regulation, giving the hosts 40 minutes to find another goal. With Lionel Messi giving his typical stellar performance (when he wasn't picking himself up from errant Uruguayan tackles) and Gonzalo Higuain stressing the seems around Diego Lugano and substitute Andres Sotti, Muslera would have been hard pressed to keep a dream performance going through the second hour. Asking him to provide more than his gasp-inducing foot save on a Carlos Tevez direct kick would have been too much (even though he provided so much more).

The one Argentine who failed to live up to the hype was the one player Sergio Batista was loathe to include in the team. The only player to miss a penalty kick, Carlos Tevez barely seemed interested in executing his chance. Perhaps it's just an extension of Tevez's personality that he steps up and rips it, and perhaps us Tevez fans have to take the bad with the great. But against Uruguay, his spot kick was a disappointment. Five feet to Fernando Muslera's right and thigh high, the attempt was easily saved by the Uruguayan `keeper, proving the difference in the match.

And so Sergio Batista, who will undoubtedly be dismissed after such an early exit, is left to rue not holding his ground on the Tevez issue. With the public clamoring for El Apache's inclusion in the weeks before the tournament, the coach - entering his first major competition in charge of Argentina - not only gave in, but he put Tevez in his starting XI. It was a surprising but welcomed reversal, Batista electing to forget the transgressions that had originally cast Tevez out of the fold.

But Tevez never worked. Only when Tevez was pulled out of the lineup did Argentina start to click. Now, with Argentina out by the error of Tevez's laces, Batista will be tempted to second guess his forgiveness.

That's too easy of an out. In truth, Tevez's saga in the Batista era will be a mere footnote. In time, nobody will care how Argentina failed, only that they did. It's a legacy Batista may never live down, and while you can argue that the Albiceleste's been broken for some time - that the distribution of talent on the team makes forming a coherent squad an underappreciated challenge - the bottom line won't be forgiving: Squad with best player of his generation eliminated two rounds too early in tournament played on home soil.

Goodbye, Argentina. Goodbye, Sergio Batista. No excuses required.

MORE THAN 42 boxes of cigarettes of varying brands, with a street value of $9 million, were seized by Customs' Contraband Enforcement Team (CET) and the police Flying Squad in an operation at Vineyard Town in Kingston, yesterday.

"We believe this has placed another dent in the illegal trade which earns hundreds of millions of dollars for smugglers," said a detective who was part of the police operation.

The police, who theorised that the cigarettes were smuggled from China, said they would be intensifying their drive to arrest more persons in the illegal trade.

Police, meanwhile, said the illegal cigarette trade not only poses a serious health risk but results in a loss of revenue for the country as the required taxes are not paid.

Fulham have confirmed the signing of former Liverpool defender John Arne Riise from Roma.

The 30-year-old has agreed a three-year deal at Craven Cottage and moves for an undisclosed fee.

"I know that the club is ambitious and continues to make good progress each year," Riise told the Fulham website.

"I am looking forward to working with [manager] Martin Jol and the rest of the squad when I report to training next week."

Jol commented: "John Arne Riise is an experienced international left-back who will bring a number of qualities to our squad and provide more options for me.

"He is used to performing at the very highest level for both club and country, and is an accomplished player defensively, who can also contribute to our attacking play.

"I am extremely happy that we've been able to add him to our squad, and believe that he will prove a valuable addition as we progress."

Riise's younger brother Bjorn Helge Riise is already on Fulham's books.

John Arne spent seven years with Liverpool, making 371 appearances and scoring 34 goals before moving to Roma in 2008.

Based on people's ignorance about their material, Twin of Twins says Stir It Up Vol. 9 due in January might be their last.

The twins came to dancehall prominence with their many volumes of the CD, on which they imitate popular figures locally and abroad.

But despite the popularity of their work, Patrick 'Curly Lox' Gaynor said the next volume might be the final one.

"It's not a retirement. This is just something we are considering, making volume nine the last volume 'cause we are up against ignorance," he told THE STAR.

He said the fans are not the ones who have a problem with the CD, but people within the dancehall industry who often take offence to the satirical skits.

"Is like wi a lick wi head pon a brick wall. And when you talk certain things you seem like you are complaining. Opinions with the passage of time might change. Wi nuh know how wi a go feel inna di next three months," Gaynor said.

"Right now wi deh a da crossroad deh. I guess we a go know if people really want wi fi continue. Wi nuh seh wi stop but wi a think. It's not a discontinuing, it's discouraging."

"A just our 40 day and 40 night dis and when we emerge from the wilderness dem a go know if a di last one or wi just a go sicka dan eva, who knows?"

Gaynor added that there are times when people refer to them as comedians but other times they are taken very seriously. He explained that he cannot understand why they have to explain their skits and songs every time they do them.

Meanwhile, he said Stir It Up Vol. 9 is complete and is now going through the legal procedures. It is at the launch of the CD in January that they will make the public aware of their decision.

But if they do decide to make it their last, Gaynor said their fans might be disappointed.

"Over the years we've gathered a cult following who might be upset at the mere thought, but I won't be conceited, you'll just have to ask them," Gaynor told THE STAR.

"We just want our fans to know what we go through to do what we do for them and if a lot of people are contented with ignorance of what we face for them then we must fight another battle worthy of our time and devotion."

Gaynor is also facing further disappointments, as the memorial for his son Zion that was going to be held at Jerky's in Manchester on December 31 was denied a permit.

"A kid's memorial? Dat nuh mek no sense. Is not a who know seh dem bad or gun hand inna di air sort of show," he said.

As a result, Gaynor said they might have to change the venue or schedule the event for another day early next year.

Wayne Rooney Manchester United v New England Revolution

Michael Owen set United on its way five minutes after the break, with teenager Federico Macheda adding two more.

But it was a barren night for Dimitar Berbatov who, despite assurances about his future from manager Sir Alex Ferguson, could have most to lose from any big-money transfer for Wesley Sneijder.

With speculation mounting over an imminent deal for the Inter Milan playmaker, both Nani and Berbatov have something to prove.

Nani was only a substitute in the Champions League final defeat to Barcelona in May and Berbatov did not even make it that far, spending the evening on his own in tearful contemplation about his Wembley fate.

To that end, the Bulgarian could have done with tucking away the first decent chance of the game, five minutes before half-time, when Fabio charged to the byline and cut a perfect cross back for the striker.

With only the goalkeeper to beat, Berbatov should have found the net.

Instead, his side-footed effort was pushed away by Matt Reis.

As Berbatov was amongst a trio of players who made way at the break, it was not a satisfactory conclusion to the evening.

Wayne Rooney was also substituted at the interval after failing to tuck home Nani's far-post cross, although he has nothing to prove after finding his form at the back end of United's record 19th Premier League title-winning campaign.

Should Sneijder's arrival from Inter eventually be completed, it would offer Ferguson an additional attacking option and a replacement for the retired Paul Scholes.

What leaves Berbatov more vulnerable is that Owen has a future given the 31-year-old has signed a one-year contract extension, when most observers anticipated him being amongst those released in the summer.

The clinical manner in which he put United ahead in front of a record 51,000 friendly crowd at the Gillette Stadium emphasised why he was selected on the bench ahead of Berbatov for the defeat to Barcelona.

Owen may not have the pace of old but he retains accuracy in his shooting boots and a neat finish from a tight angle compared favourably with Berbatov's failure.

Macheda added a second five minutes later, although the hosts responded almost immediately as they capitalised on being awarded a dubious free-kick when Benny Feilhaber's shot deflected in off Kenny Mansally.

Another neat finish from Macheda - zero goals in 14 appearances on loan with Sampdoria last season - soon followed.

After a tortuous summer in his personal life, Ryan Giggs received a warm reception upon his arrival and it was his pass that provided United with a fourth, for Park Ji-sung.

Brazil's Wednesday explosion was led by Pato and Neymar.

Alexandre Pato and Neymar scored two goals each as defending champion Brazil defeated Ecuador 4-2 to reach the Copa America quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Brazil finished first in Group B and will play Paraguay in the next round. Ecuador was eliminated.

Pato scored with a header in the 28th minute and a close-range shot in the 60th, while Neymar netted from inside the area in the 48th and 76th.

Striker Felipe Caicedo scored for Ecuador in the 37th and 58th.

Earlier, in Salta, Argentina, Grenddy Adrian Perozo scored two minutes into second-half stoppage time as Venezuela rallied for a 3-3 draw with Paraguay.

The result was still good enough to get Paraguay through to the quarterfinals from Group B, eliminating Costa Rica from the South American competition. Venezuela had already advanced.

Carlos Tevez Manchester City v West Brom
Manchester City has rejected a £35million from Corinthians for Carlos Tevez.

Corinthians president Andres Sanchez insists his club not raise its offer for unsettled Manchester City star Carlos Tevez.

The Eastlands club has rejected Corinthians' initial bid of £35million for the Argentine with City thought to be holding out for a £50million transfer fee.

Sanchez says if the deal is not agreed by Sunday the move will not happen, with the transfer window in Brazil set to close on July 20.

"I was in Argentina for a Brazil match [at the Copa America], I spoke with Tevez and his representative on the phone," Sanchez told Lancenet.

"Corinthians have made an offer of approximately 40million [£35 million] to sign him permanently. This sum means we will be spending 20 to 25 per cent of our TV rights earnings if City accept it.

"I have made an offer which I think City cannot refuse, and we will not raise it further. If they ask for [£50 million], they will keep him.

"If we haven't closed the deal by Sunday it won't happen this year."

Tevez admits he would no problem returning to Corinthians after two successful years in Brazil prior to his move to England with West Ham in 2006.

"An offer arrived and I would have no problem returning," said Tevez.

"They got in contact with me, sent an offer to the club and in eight to 10 days the transfer market in Brazil closes.

The Croatian is expected to submit in writing his desire to leave the club today in an attempt to force through a move to Stamford Bridge - but Spurs maintain their bullish stance

Tottenham are expecting to receive a 'final' offer in excess of £30 million from Chelsea for Luka Modric, after it emerged that the midfielder is set to hand in a formal transfer request.

Modric is expected to officially notify Spurs of his desire to leave White Hart Lane after the north London club rejected a second bid worth £27m for the playmaker.

The 25-year-old had previously insisted he would not submit a transfer request because it would be 'disrespectful' but he has changed his stance after Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy told him he would not be sold this summer.

Levy has taken a dim view of Modric's representatives using the media to voice his unrest and will reiterate his stance that the midfielder, who signed a six-year contract last summer, is not for sale.

Manager Harry Redknapp confirmed on Thursday that a 'piece of paper' would not change the club's position regarding the Croatian, who touched down in South Africa with the Spurs squad on Thursday morning for their pre-season tour.

He told the BBC: "We know Luka wants to leave. Writing it down on a piece of paper doesn't make much difference to our stance."

Chelsea, however, have been encouraged by Modric's desire to move to Stamford Bridge and are understood to be preparing a third and final offer worth in excess of £30m for the former Dinamo Zagreb star.

The Blues' latest offer of £25m plus a further £2m in success-related add-ons was rejected earlier this week and Spurs are not expecting a significant increase on that bid. Sources have suggested that Modric's aggressive pursuit of a move is partly motivated by the knowledge that Chelsea are trying to sign him cheaply in relation to what might be considered his market value.

At the weekend, Modric attacked Levy in an interview with a Croatian newspaper, labelling the Spurs chief 'arrogant' and accusing him of breaking a 'gentleman's agreement' to sell him to a bigger club this summer.

Tottenham have furiously denied that there was any such understanding when Modric signed his contract last year and are likely to fine him two weeks' wages for his public outburst.

Modric described his 'dream' of playing for Chelsea, adding he wants to play in the Champions League next season and challenge for trophies.

Chelsea are understood to have prepared a wage package worth £130,000-a-week for the Croat, which dwarfs the £45,000 weekly salary he currently earns at White Hart Lane.

Meanwhile, Tottenham midfielder Sandro will be assessed by club doctors on Thursday amid fears that he will require knee surgery that could rule him out for three months.

The 22-year-old suffered a suspected tear to the meniscus in his right knee while on international duty for Brazil at the Copa America and was sent home to London.

The French boss left the club's first pre-season game in Malaysia in anger after the Spain internationals comments were published on the Catalan clubs official website

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hit out at Barcelonamidfielder Xavi, who claimed Cesc Fabregas is "suffering" at the Emirates because he wants to move to Camp Nou.

The Gunners captain has been heavily linked with a return to the Catalan giants this summer, and Xavi said he had been told by his international team-mate that he wanted to rejoin his former club.

The Spain star told Barca's official website: "I spoke to Cesc in Ibiza and he said he was suffering because he wanted to come. It's more like, he did everything he could to come and wants to leave Arsenal - although he made it clear that now everything depends on the selling club."

But Wenger believes Xavi's comments were "disrespectful", telling reporters after his side's first pre-season game in Malaysia: "It is very disrespectful, and it is not the first time that Xavi has been disrespectful to Arsenal Football Club.

"If I found Barcelona in exactly the same position, I believe a mutual respect between the clubs should stop this kind of comment.

"I believe that I cannot comment on every comment. What is important is that Cesc Fabregas is contracted to Arsenal Football Club. That is a fact. Arsenal wants to keep him and all the rest is comment."

Arsenal have been continually frustrated by Barcelona's treatment of the situation, and were left angered last summer when Carles Puyol, as well as Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, put a Barca shirt on Fabregas after Spain's 2010 World Cup win.

The Gunners have so far rejected two approaches from Barcelona for Fabregas this summer, both under the club's 45 million valuation of the player.

The Premier League champions will step up negotiations with the Dutch international's representatives as they seek a compromise over his 227,000-a-week stance

By Sergio Chesi & Wayne Veysey

Manchester United have agreed a 40 million club record fee with Inter for the transfer of Wesley Sneijder, Goal.comcan reveal.

But Sneijder's wage demands are currently holding up the deal from being close to completion. Sources have told Goal.com that the player's camp have indicated they want around 227,000-a-week but United are reluctant to pay more than 193,000-a-week.

Nevertheless, the Premier League champions are hoping to reach a compromise over the difference as the prospect of a switch that would smash United's transfer record grows increasingly likely.

Senior officials from the two clubs are understood to have shaken hands on the terms of the deal after United chief executive David Gill made it clear the Premier League champions are willing to meet Inter's asking price in a series of meetings in recent days.

United have confirmed that Gill was in Zurich on Wednesday, where an Inter delegation was also present, to attend a European Club Association meeting but an Inter source told Goal.com that he had been in Milan on Tuesday and early on Wednesday to lead Sneijder negotiations with another Old Trafford director.

United's focus will now turn to agreeing personal terms with the Holland international, who is regarded by the club as a natural heir to the recently retired Paul Scholes. An official bid will follow if the 19-times English champions are confident they can meet the player's demands.

It is believed that the 2011 Champions League finalists could attempt to meet the shortfall in the two parties' positions with bonus-related payments or an enhanced image rights deal

Sneijder is currently at Inter's pre-season training camp at Pinzolo in Italy. The deal will now depend on his desire to force through a move to Old Trafford, which offers him an excellent chance to add to an already impressive medal haul which includes domestic titles in Italy, Spain and the Netherlands, in addition to the 2010 Champions League.

He has a contract at San Siro that expires in 2015 and would be content to see it out if a transfer fails to materialise this summer, hence his reluctance to agitate in public for a move.

New Inter manager Gian Piero Gasperini has told the Inter hierarchy that he does not see the Holland star as indispensable as he prepares to field a new 3-4-3 formation next season.

Deejay Vybz Kartel has denied rumours circulating that he has HIV. The rumours began circulating late last week via a broadcast message sent out on BlackBerry messenger.

According to a broadcast message making the rounds last week, a female who allegedly has HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is said to have had unprotected sex with the deejay. The message implies that the deejay may now too have contracted the life-threatening disease. This week, the rumours also surfaced on the Internet.

unscrupulous clowns

Speaking with The STAR yesterday, Kartel said, "There's no truth whatsoever to that statement. That's just frivolity on behalf of some unscrupulous clowns. What I'm interested to know is why they would wanna start a rumour about HIV when they know that I've copulated with their moms, sisters, aunts, girlfriends and all the other females in their pathetic little insignificant life."

The controversial deejay has been quiet over the past few weeks after the split from his business partner Corey Todd.

Together, Todd and Kartel started Daggerin Unlimited, producing Daggerin condoms and Vybz rum. Todd has since been affiliated with the new Club Riddim, formerly The Building in New Kingston. Partnering with Beenie Man, Todd has formed the Yaad Swag rum.

When asked about his upcoming business plans, Kartel said, "I've been secretly coming up with a business plan of action that will blow people's minds away, no not firearms production. That's all I will divulge for now."
