June 4, 2009

Police Commissioner Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin yesterday ordered 10 cops, who were implicated in the multi-million dollar lotto scam in St James, to retire from the constabulary in the public interest.

The 10 were among 18 cops who were taken off front line duty at the Mount Salem Police Station after police cracked a section of the scam which reportedly rakes in upwards of $30 million annually.

LEWIN. made recommendation after reading DPP's report

Lewin's orders came after he leafed through a report handed to him by Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn and consulted with head of the Anti-Corruption Branch, Assistant Commissioner Justin Felice.

Lewin then forwarded the file to the Police Service Commission and made recommendations that the cops be retired from the constabulary.

Six other cops were ordered reinstated by Lewin, while the roles of two others in the international scam will be further investigated.

The cops were taken off front line duty after intense investigations into the case of Kourtney Grayson, who was in April freed of impersonating a police officer and unlawful possession of property in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court when the DPP entered a nolle prosequi in the case.

VIENTIANE, Laos (AP) - A court in Laos found a pregnant British woman guilty of trafficking heroin and sentenced her to life in prison yesterday, a court official said.

The life sentence for 20-year-old Samantha Orobator came after a one-day trial in the Lao capital, according to Chanthaly Duangvilai, vice-president of the Vientiane Court.

Orobator pleaded guilty, the court official said at a press briefing after the trial, adding that she named several of her alleged accomplices in her testimony.
She was the only defendant in the case.

Heroin trafficking is punishable by death, but she was spared because Lao law does not allow the execution of pregnant women, said Chanthaly.

Under a pact signed last month by Laos and Britain that still needs ratification, Orobator could be extradited to serve her time in Britain. Lao officials, however, could still veto her return.
Orobator had been jailed since last August, but her plight drew public attention only last month after the British legal charity Reprieve publicised her circumstances and what they believed was the possibility she could be executed by firing squad if found guilty.

The case attracted particular interest because Orobator became pregnant while incarcerated. Lao officials have asserted that she may have artificially inseminated herself while behind bars.

FERNANDO DE NORONHA, Brazil (AP) - Military planes located more debris from an Air France jet yesterday as the first navy ship arrived at the scene in the mid-Atlantic. But high seas and heavy winds slowed the recovery effort and delayed the arrival of crucial deep-water submersibles.

Search vessels from several nations pushed toward the floating debris, including a 23-foot chunk of plane and a 12-mile-long oil slick that Brazilian pilots spotted from the air. Rescuers have still found no signs of life from the plane that was carrying 228 people from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, Air Force spokesman Colonel Jorge Amaral said.

A Brazilian navy spokeswoman said a patrol boat was close to one debris field after spending two days pushing through rough weather to reach the site, but had not yet retrieved any wreckage.

A navy frigate was expected to arrive later in the day, said the spokeswoman, who spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with policy.

Flight 447 disappeared minutes after flying into an extremely dangerous band of storms Sunday night, but what exactly caused its electrical systems and cabin pressure to fail remains a mystery. The "black box" c**kpit recorders could be miles below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.

Cops take former 'boot camp'

TREASURE BEACH, St Elizabeth - It's confirmed.
The Tranquility Bay facility at Treasure Beach which was previously used as an offshore reform school for rebellious children, mostly from the United States, will now be used to train police recruits for at least the next two years.

At a meeting Tuesday with Treasure Beach residents and in subsequent response to journalists' questions, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of administration, Jevene Bent said training "operations" would begin "somewhere in the middle of the month".

The complex sited on two and a half acres of beach front land, referred to by locals as Old Whard, was controversially used for 12 years by the United States group, World Wide Association of Speciality Programmes and Schools (WWASP) as a 'boot camp' for teenagers. It was closed in January.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force's two-year lease on the privately-owned facility begun on June 1.

"We are putting all our preparations in place to bring in our people," said Bent, who travelled to Treasure Beach to explain the JCF's plans
to residents.

She said the facility would provide training for 180-200 recruits "at any one time" and was part of the drive to accelerate police numbers from the current just over 8,000 to the proposed establishment figure of 12,000. Training for new JCF recruits lasts about
six months.

LOCAL health authorities say they are concerned about recent statistics showing a 29 per cent jump in reported cases of accidental poisoning over the period 2007-2008.

While not being able to give statistics for this year, health ministry officials said if the jump of 495 reported poisoning case in 2007 to 639 in 2008 was anything to go by, this year will see a significant increase in poison cases.

The ministry cited concerns that children continued to be the main victims.

Data released from the Surveillance Unit of the Health Promotion and Protection Division of the Ministry of Health show that of 639 cases for last year, 504 (79 per cent) occurred in children under five years of age.

"Storage of chemicals in inappropriate containers such as soft drink bottles, water bottles and cups were a major risk factor for cases of accidental poisoning.

Children often consume agents and harmful chemicals such as bleach. Also pesticides are the agents that are most often accidentally ingested by adults as a result of poor hygiene and reluctance to wear protective equipment," said Yvonne Reid, project manager of the Caribbean Poison Information Network.

"Investigations have also shown that items of bleach, pharmaceuticals, kerosene oil and pesticides were among the most common items causing the deaths. Poisoning by ingestion was the most common means reported," said Reid.

MANDEVILLE, Manchester - President of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, Winston Lawson, has issued a strong call to police officers to stop abusing their powers by using heavy handed tactics and abusive language against citizens when carrying out their daily duties.

He said too often police officers feel they have to belittle citizens to show that they are in control.
"I am talking about the boxes and the kicking and the gun butting," he said. "Too often we talk about "aay bwoy" or "go a yuh yard now!" to prove who's boss. And it hurts. it pains my heart to see when police sink to the levels of those we fear. And in those cases we really have a hard time telling the difference between the two."

Lawson was addressing police officers in Manchester at a graduation ceremony for officers certified to drive police vehicles. The graduation was held at the International Chinese Restaurant on May 15.

Lawson called on the officers to emulate the conduct of police officers in the United States.

"You know in the majority of incidents in the USA when persons are offensive to police, the reaction of the police is firm and sometimes forceful but hardly ever disrespectful. The police will say, "Sir would you step out of the car", or "Sir, I am not going to tell you again" ... and don't ever think that it is because they are soft. Because they are not. It is a conduct that is necessary in providing a service - police service," Lawson said.

$40m to ease congestion

June 4, 2009

he chronic traffic congestion which has been plaguing Montego Bay for quite sometime, should be eased soon, as the National Works Agency (NWA) will this month begin the implementation of a $40 million traffic management system in the resort city.
20090603T220000-0500_152786_OBS____M_TO_EASE_CONGESTION_1.jpg
The chamber president argued that one of the major factors affecting Montego Bay's traffic flow is the matter of indiscipline drivers-particularly taxi and minibus operators

The state-of-the- art project which is being funded by the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF), is expected to be completed by the end of August.

According to Janel Ricketts, the community relations officer for the western region, the system consists of a Traffic Management Centre (TMC), coordinated traffic signals and an Incident Management System (IMS).

"The TMC will be the site at which all the communication between traffic signals and cameras takes place. Specialists at the TMC will have the ability to monitor traffic operations along major corridors in real time and make signal changes in response to traffic demand," she explained, adding that the traffic signal system consists of more than 20 traffic lights linked to the centre.

Ricketts pointed out that the IMS consists of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras located at key intersections within the city centre. This, she argued, will allow the close monitoring of traffic conditions, and allow for the formulation of the appropriate responses.

BANGKOK Actor David Carradine, star of the 1970s TV series "Kung Fu" who also had a wide-ranging career in the movies, has been found dead in the Thai capital, Bangkok. A news report said he was found hanged in his hotel room and was believed to have committed suicide.

A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy, Michael Turner, confirmed the death of the 72-year-old actor. He said Carradine died either late Wednesday or early Thursday, but he could not provide further details out of consideration for his family.

The Web site of the Thai newspaper The Nation cited unidentified police sources as saying Carradine was found Thursday hanged in his luxury hotel room and is believed to have committed suicide.

Carradine was a leading member of a venerable Hollywood acting family that included his father, character actor John Carradine, and brother Keith.

In all, he appeared in more than 100 feature films with such directors as Martin Scorsese, Ingmar Bergman and Hal Ashby.

But he was best known for his role as Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin priest traveling the 1800s American frontier West in the TV series "Kung Fu," which aired in 1972-75.

He reprised the role in a mid-1980s TV movie and played Caine's grandson in the 1990s syndicated series "Kung Fu: The Legend Continues."

He returned to the top in recent years as the title character in Quentin Tarantino's two-part saga "Kill Bill."

NC police: Husband arranged wife's rape online

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. A North Carolina husband used the online advertising service Craigslist to enlist a man to rape his wife in the couple's home, police said Wednesday.

The 25-year-old Kannapolis man faces first-degree rape and other charges. The Associated Press, which generally does not identify victims of sexual assault, is not naming the man to avoid identifying his wife.

His wife called 911 early Sunday morning and said a man with a knife raped her in the bedroom of their home in Kannapolis, about 25 miles northeast of Charlotte, authorities said. Her husband was in the room, police said. Their two young children were also home, but were unaware of what was happening, authorities said.

The husband sought someone in the ads to come to his home and have sex with his wife using "scare tactics," police said. It was without her knowledge or consent, police said.

Authorities are still investigating the identity of the man who attacked the woman and it wasn't known if the husband paid him to do it. The woman was not seriously injured, but was treated at a hospital and released.

Investigators turned their suspicions to the husband after his statement didn't add up and because there were no signs the attacker broke into the home. The husband was jailed Wednesday on $200,000 bond.

"We share the public's horror that such a crime was committed, and our heart goes out to the victim," said Craigslist spokeswoman Susan MacTavish Best.

The online classified site had been criticized for its "erotic services" section, which Craigslist agreed to do away with last month after a Boston medical student, deemed "the Craigslist killer," was charged with killing a woman he met on the site.

A Kansas City, Mo., man was sentenced last month to 29 years in prison for raping a woman who advertised in the section.

Jamaica's Reggae Boyz have been boosted by the addition of five Europe-based players to the squad of 22, who are currently preparing for an international friendly against Panama at the National Stadium on Sunday.

Playing without a number of key overseas-based players, the Reggae Boyz gave a good account of themselves against both Haiti and El Salvador over the past weekends.

Joining the squad are exciting left-sided player Demar Phillips of Aalesunds FK in Norway and his club mate, midfielder Khari Stephenson, who last represented the country in early 2008. The nippy and skilful midfielder Jamal Campbell-Ryce, who last played on local soil in November 2008, and the emerging midfield giant Rodolph Austin, a key figure in Jamaica's victory in the Digicel Caribbean Championships in December 2008, are also invited.

Completing the list of new Europe-based invitees is forward Luton Shelton of Aalborg in Denmark. Shelton arrived in the island last Friday, while the quartet of Phillips, Stephenson, Campbell-Ryce and Austin will arrive today. Forward Nicholas Addlery, who scored on his debut against Haiti recently, will arrive on Friday in search of his third cap.

impressive performances

Already in the island are Claude Davis (Derby County), Damion Stewart (Queens Park Rangers), Jermaine Johnson (Sheffield Wednesday), Jason Morrison (Ferencvaros), Wolry Wolfe (Ferencvaros) and Rafe Wolfe (Ferencvaros).

Following impressive performances against Haiti and El Salvador, Harbour View central midfielder Richard Edwards, and the Tivoli Gardens duo of Navian Boyd and Roland Dean have retained their places in the squad. Also returning are Adrian Reid who stood out against El Salvador, Tivoli Gardens utility player Oraine Simpson, Meadhaven's Keammar Daley and the Digicel Premier League's top scorer Devon Hodges, who did not look out of place after entering the field of play as a substitute against El Salvador last Saturday.

Desmond Breakenridge of Arnett Gardens, who did not travel to Fort Lauderdale or Washington, DC, for the friendly internationals against Haiti and El Salvador, respectively, could get his chance on Sunday as he has been recalled.

TEEN 'BEATS' COP AT STATION

June 2, 2009
Started By shawndj4 Comments

A female police inspector was attacked and punched repeatedly by a teenage girl who was taken to her for counsellingby her parents.

The teen drew looks of shock and surprise when the allegations against her were outlined in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

The teen, who has since been slapped with a number of charges including malicious destruction of property, assaulting an officer, using indecent language, communicating with a prisoner and resisting with arrest, was taken to the police station by her parents because of her unruly, disrespectful and disruptive behaviour.

indiscipline

It is alleged that when she arrived at the police station and was being spoken to by the inspector, her indiscipline continued and she attacked the policewoman. The teen reportedly punched the inspector in the face, damaging her glasses. She is also accused of inflicting several other blows to the officer. The inspector told the court that she had to pay $6,900 to repair the damage to her glasses.

When the matter was brought up in court, however, the inspector revealed that she was willing to work with the troubled teen.

Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey urged the probation officers to speak with the child and offer her counselling. The Inspector promised to help in the process.

The matter is to return before the court on June 24 when the accused will be sentenced.

It's always fun to write about research that you can actually try out for yourself.

Try this: Take a photo and upload it to Facebook, then after a day or so, note what the URL to the picture is (the actual photo, not the page on which the photo resides), and then delete it. Come back a month later and see if the link works. Chances are: It will.

http://a323.yahoofs.com/ymg/null__14/null-238287095-1242920820.jpg?ym0twSBDOAb5sfOH

Facebook isn't alone here. Researchers at Cambridge University (so you know this is legit, people!) have found that nearly half of the social networking sites don't immediately delete pictures when a user requests they be removed. In general, photo-centric websites like Flickr were found to be better at quickly removing deleted photos upon request.

Why do "deleted" photos stick around so long? The problem relates to the way data is stored on large websites: While your personal computer only keeps one copy of a file, large-scale services like Facebook rely on what are called content delivery networks to manage data and distribution. It's a complex system wherein data is copied to multiple intermediate devices, usually to speed up access to files when millions of people are trying to access the service simultaneously. (Yahoo! Tech is served by dozens of servers, for example.) But because changes aren't reflected across the CDN immediately, ghost copies of files tend to linger for days or weeks.

helsea have confirmed the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti as their new manager, just a day after the exit of Guus Hiddink.

Carlo Ancelotti

TonyMarshall/Empics

Ancelotti's twin Champions League wins make him an outstanding manager.

The Italian succeeds Hiddink, whose short stint at Stamford Bridge ended after Saturday's FA Cup final victory over Everton. Ancelotti, who has long been linked with the Stamford Bridge post, left AC Milan by mutual consent on Sunday.

A statement on their official website read: ''Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce that Carlo Ancelotti has agreed to become our new manager. He has signed a three year contract and will start on July 1, 2009.

''Carlo was the outstanding candidate for the job. He has proved over a long period his ability to build teams that challenged for, and have been successful in, major domestic and European competitions.

''He also had a highly successful playing career in those competitions and therefore brings unparalleled all round experience to the job.

''We are sure everybody at Chelsea will give him a warm welcome and we are all looking forward to working with him.''

Ancelotti, 50 later this month, twice won the Champions League, in 2003 and 2007, and the Serie A title in 2004 during his eight years in charge at Milan. He has previously coached at Reggiana, Parma and Juventus.

His track record of success dates back to his playing days when he also won two league titles and two European Cups with Milan and he becomes the fourth Chelsea manager in 21 months following Jose Mourinho, Avram Grant, Luiz Felipe Scolari and Hiddink.

Ancelotti told Chelsea TV: ''Milan for me was a great experience. For five years I played with a great team - we had a lot of success - and eight years to train a great team.

''Now I think it is time to change and Chelsea for me was a great opportunity, a great team. Now I think it is the right moment for a new challenge and I want to put all my energy for Chelsea.''

Ancelotti will be charged with replicating his past European successes at Chelsea while also re-establishing the club on top of the Premier League. The Champions League title is the only trophy Chelsea have not won since Roman Abramovich took over at Stamford Bridge.

''There will be the same pressure because Chelsea are a great team in Europe,'' Ancelotti added. ''They want to win all the competitions.

''For me the Champions League is a beautiful sensation. When I played I won it two times, it was a fantastic moment and the same thing when I was a coach in Milan. The Champions League for me is the best competition in the world.''

But there are question marks over Ancelotti, not least over his lack of English, given the problems that appeared to bring when Scolari was in charge.

Ancelotti said: ''For me (English) is not easy but I want to learn and I want to improve. I have the time and when we start the season I will speak well. It is important for me to speak with the players, the team, the assistant and all the operators that will work with me.''

Popular dancehall personality Lena British is yet again making news in fashion and entertainment circles as she gets set to launch her own designer hair line.

The line, called 'Lena's Island Beauty', has some 16 different styles and is dedicated to making the Jamaican woman look and feel beautiful. She will officially launch the hair line on June 8, at The View, one of Kingston's newest entertainment hot spots, owned by dancehall veteran, Junior Reid.

"Everybody thinks I'm a fashion guru, and maybe it's true... but I know what looks good, I like to look good and I like to feel beautiful, and every woman likes to feel that way," Lena British said.

The dancehall beauty says that was the inspiration behind her decision to do the line.

"I have a range of designs and colours that can fit any woman, and can be made into any style to fit any occasion," she boasted.

Lena's Island Beauty originally started out as an exclusive beauty product for her hair salon, Inner Beauty Salon, but demand for the brand has increased.

expanding

"Right now, we are in discussions with people who want to stock and sell the hair in their shops and in some wholesales. We are already in a few shops in Kingston, but our drive is expanding and the hair line is getting popular. I hope that sooner or later we're going to be available everywhere, and in the future, in South Florida and in the UK," she said.

Lena's Island Beauty comes in both human and synthetic varieties, and styles include 'Reggae Vibes', 'Inner Beauty', 'Uptown Goddess', 'Downtown Empress', 'First Lady', 'Choice', 'Divalicious', 'Ghetto Fabulosity', 'Island Queen', 'Sea Breeze', 'Tropical Princess', 'Dancehall Diva', 'Passion Vibes' and 'Rhythm Vibes'.

"Over time, I will expand these products, as I will continue to keep the fashionable woman in mind, whether you want to randomly go for a glamorous look, or they want to keep their hair immaculate at all times. Lena's Island Beauty is for you," she said.

Commissioner Raymond Kelly said 25-year-old Omar J. Edwards died after being shot late Thursday within blocks of the Harlem police station where he worked.

Edwards had just finished his shift around 10:30 p.m. when he headed to his car and saw that the drivers-side window had been smashed and a man was going through the vehicle, Kelly said.

Edwards struggled with the man, who got away from him by slipping out of his sweater, Kelly said. Edwards chased the man up two streets with his gun drawn, he said.

A sergeant and two plainclothes officers in an unmarked police car saw the pursuit and made a U-turn to follow the men, Kelly said. One of the officers jumped out of the car and fired six times, hitting Edwards twice once in the arm and once in the chest, he said.

Kelly said Edwards did not fire his weapon. He died at the Harlem Hospital Center about an hour after the shooting.

It was unclear whether the officers identified themselves. The name of the officer who fired the shots has not been released, but Kelly said he had worked at the NYPD for four years.

While we dont know all the details of what happened tonight, this is a tragedy. Rest assured that we will find out exactly what happened here, and we will learn from it so it doesnt happen again, Mayor Michael Blo****erg said at a news conference from the hospital.

Kelly said Edwards had been on the force for two years and worked in the housing bureau. He was recently married and had two young children.

The shooter was white and Edwards was black, a fact that could raise questions about police use of deadly force in a minority community.

In the past three years in the New York City area, there have been two other cases of off-duty policemen being shot and killed by other officers.

In 2008, a black, off-duty Mount Vernon police officer was killed by a Westchester County policeman while holding a gun on an assault suspect in suburban White Plains. A grand jury found the victim had failed to identify himself as an officer. County officers one white, one black and two Hispanic were cleared of wrongdoing by a grand jury.

In 2006, a New York City police officer, Eric Hernandez, was shot and killed by an on-duty patrolman who was responding to an attack at a White Castle in the Bronx.

LONDON - Court documents show that a 13-year-old boy who was reported to be the father of a baby girl born earlier this year in Britain is not her dad.

Newspaper photos of the baby-faced teenager, Alfie, along with the 15-year-old mother and the infant shocked the country.

They also sparked debate about sex education in Britain, which has one of Europe's highest teen pregnancy rates.

Details of DNA testing were revealed Tuesday when a court-ordered reporting ban was lifted.

The court documents show that another boy, aged 15, is the baby's real father.

The mother lives in Eastbourne, on the southeast coast of England.

Beaten with an old, tattered suitcase by a mentally challenged man, an American female tourist is now nursing injuries after the encounter in downtown Montego Bay yesterday.

This came just hours after a member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) shot and killed an unidentified man of unsound mind after he attacked a policeman and a bystander with a machete. Business-man Garfield Williams, who was a bystander, was also shot and killed in that mźlée.

According to a witness, who wished not to be named, the last incident occurred approximately 1:40 p.m. along the busy Harbour Street thoroughfare in the tourism capital.

attacked

"This man who was obviously mad, just attacked the tourist with an old suitcase and began beating her in the head. I was so shocked because when the suitcase began breaking apart, he started to use the wheel of the suitcase to continue his beating," the stunned witness told The STAR.

She said when several by-standers saw what was taking place, they intervened and began hitting the attacker with anything they could find, but he managed to escape more severe injuries when he outran the irate citizens. Residents later assisted the tourist in seeking medical treatment.

But this is not the first time in recent weeks that tourists visiting the island have been at the centre of violent attacks. On May 21, six Canadian tourists were caught in a shooting incident while in traffic on Spanish Town road in Kingston.

A male occupant in the motor vehicle received injuries as a result of a shattered glass during the incident, but the other occupants were unharmed. According to the police, the six tourists were travelling between Montego Bay, St James, and Kingston when, upon reaching a section of Spanish Town Road, they heard three shots. It was later discovered that the right rear window was shattered and the front windscreen damaged. The group then went to the Kingston Public Hospital where they were treated and released.

1-Y-O SAVES DYING 'GRANDPA'

May 28, 2009

At just one year and seven months, little Gaviann Johnson is already being hailed as a hero and a lifesaver.

Family members say the toddler, who only knows a few words, saved the life of her granduncle who had suffered a stroke and fainted, hitting his face on a piece of furniture.

Gaviann's grandaunt and wife of the injured man, Dalsie Buchanan, told THE STAR that on Monday, everyone at home was outside while she tended to her flower garden. She said her husband, Hilton, went to use the bathroom and Gaviann, always his companion, went inside with him. Minutes later, a frantic child returned. "She came back outside and she said to me, 'granddad bottom'. I thought she was saying that granddad spanked her so I said to her 'ok, I'm gonna go inside and spank granddad for you'. When I said that she started to cry and said, 'granddad hurt'."

Realising that something must be wrong, Buchanan said she went into the house and was greeted by a trail of *lo**. After initially walking past her husband, who was lying in a sofa, she found him bleeding from cuts to his forehead, nose and lips.

fainted

The 85-year-old was taken to the Mandeville Regional Hospital where it was discovered that he had suffered a stroke. Buchanan said her husband fainted while in the bathroom, but managed to crawl outside, before fainting again. This erratic behaviour, they presume, caught the child's attention and made her realise that something was wrong.

Buchanan is grateful for her grandniece's alertness and the fact that she used her limited vocabulary to get the family's attention. She said, "If she did not come to us, maybe he would have perished. She couldn't tell us word for word, but she tried."

She said Gaviann, who stays with her and her husband most of the time, has a very close relationship with her granduncle, to the point where she thinks of him as her grandfather. "They have a bond, you know. He spends quality time with her. He reads to her. They are very, very close."

She told THE STAR that from his hospital bed, her husband sent a message to Gaviann. "He told me, 'I don't know if I will live to see her again, but tell her granddad loves her'." Gaviann has also been missing her 'granddad' and realises that he is not at home. Buchanan said, "He usually turns down the bed. So I went into the room to do it and she came with me. When she didn't see him, she cried and said granddad gone to hospital, 'granddad drop and bleed'." It is also obvious that she misses him greatly as THE STAR was told that she often wanders into his room and calls for him.

Segregated School in 2009 [No Joke]

According to NYTimes, the students at Montgomery County High School had a segregated prom on May 1, 2009 and May 2, 2009.

The white students prom was held on May 1 at a community center in nearby Vidalia; the black students had theirs at the same place the following night.

Racially segregated proms have been held in Montgomery County where about two-thirds of the population is white almost every year since its schools were integrated in 1971. Such proms are, by many accounts, longstanding traditions in towns across the rural South, though in recent years a number of communities have successfully pushed for change. When the actor Morgan Freeman offered to pay for last years first-of-its-kind integrated prom at Charleston High School in Mississippi, his home state, the idea was quickly embraced by students and rejected by a group of white parents, who held a competing private prom. (The effort is the subject of a documentary, Prom Night in Mississippi, which will be shown on HBO in July.) The senior proms held by Montgomery County High School students referred to by many students as the black-folks prom and the white-folks prom are organized outside school through student committees with the help of parents. All students are welcome at the black prom, though generally few if any white students show up. The white prom, students say, remains governed by a largely unspoken set of rules about who may come. Black members of the student council say they have asked school administrators about holding a single school-sponsored prom, but that, along with efforts to collaborate with white prom planners, has failed. According to Timothy Wiggs, the outgoing student council president and one of 21 black students graduating this year, We just never get anywhere with it. Principal Luke Smith says the school has no plans to sponsor a prom, noting that when it did so in 1995, attendance was poor.

Earlier this month, on the Friday night of the white prom, Kera Nobles, a senior who is black, and six of her black classmates drove over to the local community center where it was being held. Standing amid a crowd of about 80 parents, siblings and grandparents, they snapped pictures and whooped appreciatively as their white friends blow-dried, boutonniered and glittering in a way that only high-school seniors can did their senior walk, parading in elegant pairs into the prom. We got stared at a little, being there, said one black student, but it wasnt too bad.

After the last couple were announced, after they watched the white peoples father-daughter dance and then, along with the other bystanders, were ushered by chaperones out the door, Kera and her friends piled into a nearby KFC to eat. Whatever elation they felt for their dressed-up classmates was quickly wearing off.

Rapper Earl "DMX" Simmons has reportedly pleaded "guilty" and accepted a plea deal for attempted assault charges he received earlier this year while incarcerated.

X's plea reportedly came eight days after being released from jail.

DMX -- who originally pled not guilty -- copped a plea and pled guilty to attempted aggravated assault (a felony) back on May 22 -- after an incident in which he verbally threatened guards at Tent City, Arizona, back in February. The serial law breaker is due back in Maricopa County court for sentencing on Monday. (TMZ)

The rapper's incident reportedly took place while he was in lockdown.

Joe Arpaio says Simmons became upset Sunday after being told he could not have a meal he took from a serving tray. Arpaio says Simmons then threw the tray and its contents at an officer, who wasn't injured. Simmons has been on a bread and water diet as punishment for an earlier jail violation. (Associated Press)

X previously stated his innocence regarding the assault.

"Many of you know me as DMX but right now I am speaking to you as Earl Simmons," he said in a statement. "For the record, I want to state 'I Did Not' physically touch or hit an officer. This is just another attempt to destroy my credibility." (Statement)

Currently on an appearance tour, X recently spoke on returning to hip-hop.

"Just love what you do man," X explained. "Do it for the love of it and you'll get there eventually. You know what I'm saying? That's what it is, man. Gotta keep it one hundred. I've been locked up for a few months, so I ain't really heard [about rock and hip-hop fusing] you know what I'm saying? So I'm waiting to hear it, once I hear it, I'll let you know how I feel about it. I was born ready for this [tour] man. BFW, 'Built For War' that's what we do all day, it's nothing. It's not a motherf*cking game man, this is what we do. It's what we built for, it's how we get down. Real talk. That new [Jadakiss] and Swizz [Beatz] joint, you know what I'm saying? 'She's phony, she's fake, she's fake, that's the type of people I hate.' Aigght? I'm on the remix, check that sh*t out son, real talk." (AllAZHipHop)

Their names have been withheld pending further investigation.

According to information received by the Constabulary Communication Network about 4:30 a.m., a team of police carried out a special operation, in Newton district. During the operation a house occupied by the three was searched. The search yielded four 9mm pistols, one .357 magnum pistol and .357 magnum revolver. The three were subsequently taken into police custody.

A man accused of issuing false documents to obtain a visa appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday to answer to several charges.

Gary Brown told the court that he sold clothes in downtown Kingston and that he had received a letter from England offering a better opportunity. In an attempt to get an English visa, he forged various documents.

He is charged with conspiracy, two counts for forgery, two counts for uttering forged documents and attempting to obtain a visa with false documents.

It is alleged that the accused went to the British High Commission to obtain a visa. He produced a letter from Victoria Mutual Building Society indicating that he has an unidentified sum of money at the financial institution. However, it was later revealed that the letter was false and that Brown did not have an account at the institution.

Jammal told the court he had gone to England to live because he and his family were facing difficulties. He said while there, times got even tougher and he was offered the opportunity to come to Jamaica. He said he had no choice but to accept, as he was practically homeless.

RM Pusey told Jammal that such transactions were not tolerated here. He was sentenced to $15,000 or six months for possession, $102,400 for dealing, and $153,000 or six months for taking steps to export the drug. In addition, he was given the nine-month sentence. The Cambridge Police in St James say they have sufficient evidence to charge a man in custody with the murder of a woman whose mutilated body was found in a shallow grave.

Investigators said statements were still being collected, but they are confident charges will be laid.

"Now that her identity has been established, charges will definitely be laid against the suspect. This could be done as soon as the post-mortem is carried out," an officer said.

The woman's relatives yesterday identified her as Merleen Gayle, 40, laundry attendant of Dumfries, St James. Gayle left home about 6:30 a.m. on May 23 for Kingston. She later went to Cambridge to see a friend. When she did not return, a missing-person report was filed.

On May 25, police said residents heard cries of murder coming from the direction of the suspect's house. It was also said the man was seen burning things at the back of his house.

Acting on information received, police visited the suspect and found *lo**stains at his home and burnt residue at the back of the two-room board house. Investigators walked along a dirt track at the back of the house, which led them to a nearby gully where a bra**iere was found. A freshly dug grave, which when dug up revealed Gayle's nude body, was seen. She had multiple stab wounds.

The St James police are trying to identify and locate a group of men travelling in a white Toyota Corolla who shot two men dead in the quiet community of Dumfries, Saturday night.

Dead are Sanjay Beckford, 18, who lived in Dumfries and worked at a carwash centre in the same community; and Asanie James, also 18, of neighbouring Canaan district. They were shot dead along the Dumfries roadway about 10 p.m.

Police say the men may have been part of a group of persons who had gathered along the roadway discussing the disappearance of a woman from the area a week earlier.

It is understood that a white Corolla drove up with men aboard. They opened fire, hitting Beckford and James. According to the police, the men were shot in their heads and upper bodies, .

Investigators confirmed that a gang feud has been brewing in Canaan where James lived. They are also investigating reports that the attack might be in reprisal of an incident in which two men were chopped up at a dance in February. A car was also damaged in that incident. The matter is before the court.

A man was sentenced to 12 months at hard labour suspended for three years, after begging the RM not let him go to prison, when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Dwayne Wilks, charged with conspiracy to defraud, pleaded guilty. Wilks, who entered the court, looking ill, said he was having stomach problems and did not feel well.

"Mi cyaan go back in there, mi no feel good," said Wilks, telling Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey he was a very sick person and begging for a second chance. He told the RM that he would not commit another criminal act and mentioned that it was his first time before the court.

It is alleged that Wilks was a part of a scam that resulted in the complainant losing $30,000. In January this year, the complainant responded to an advertisement offering jobs in the Bahamas. She was told that she would receive a document from a bearer with the information about the job. Wilks was the bearer in the operation. She was further advised to transfer $30,000 to a specific bank account.

After the money had been transferred, the complainant realised that it was a scam after not being able to contact the person who had told her to send the money to the account.

A sting operation was arranged and the police apprehended Wilks. An MP4 player, which was said to belong to the complainant's son, was also found in Wilks' possession.

She reportedly left the child and went to a nearby shop. On her return, she did not see the child and raised an alarm. Members of the community launched a search and found Demino's body floating in the tank.

The days of popping champagne, sporting expensive gold chains, and throwing away money at parties are long gone for lotto scammers in Montego Bay, St James, who are now said to be fleeing the city while others are trying to keep a low profile. This is so following last week's launch of the Jamaican Operations Linked to Telemarketing (JOLT) task force. Residents from at least two popular communities in Montego Bay told THE STAR that since JOLT's operation last week wherein nine persons were detained and vehicles and cash seized, many dialers (scammers) were shaking in their boots. Snitcherton, one of the Mon-tegonians that contacted THE STAR, said who scammers in his community had gone as far as to stop wearing jewellery and had started driving less-expensive vehicles, attempting to be less flamboyant. 'Dem stop floss' "Some a de man dem stop beat jewellery. yow! dem pud dung de big chain and all a drive some likkle Corolla," he said. "Dem stop floss. Dem a tek it serious cuz dem kno dat de police dem ave information on dem already." The resident said some of the scammers in his area had even convened a small meeting to discuss strategies to elude the task force. Jelli-Annsaid she, too, had seen a small gathering of known scammers in her community, but could not say whether it was a meeting to discuss measures about how not to get caught. She said she had noticed that the dialers had been less bold in their choice of clothes and cars. She said some had left their apartments and houses, which they had bought with scam money, opting to venture out of town to "cool out". Assistant Commission of Police (ACP) Les Green, a member of the JOLT task force, said the police had anticipated that the scammers would try to keep a low profile but said this would not deter the operation. He said: "This (JOLT) is going to be a long series of activities across the island, and we will continue to work with the information we are receiving." migration ACP Green said the migration of scammers to other parts of the island was not necessarily a reaction to JOLT. He stated that scammers had already been moving across parishes. JOLT comprises the Immigration Custom Enforcement (ICE) division of the United States Homeland Security Department, the United States Embassy in Jamaica, and personnel from a number of national authorities, including the Jamaica Constabulary Force, the Customs, Passport and Immigration department, the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court, and the Financial Investigation Division of the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service. The task force's aim is to decapitate Montego Bay's deadly, multi-billion-dollar lotto scam.

'Granny' rapist loses appeal

A man accused of raping an elderly woman who cared for him as her own grandchild has lost his appeal against his convictions and 20-year prison sentence for rape and indecent assault.

Conrad Williams, 39, shopkeeper and construction worker of Sue River district, St Mary, and a Kingston address, was convicted in June 2004.

A jury found him guilty of raping the 67-year-old woman in December 2003 and Senior Puisne Judge Marva McIntosh sentenced him.

The woman had testified at the trial that she was at home at about 6 p.m. on December 8, 2003, when the accused whom she knew from he was a child visited her. She said she was lying on her bed when the accused jumped on her and began riding her like a horse at Caymanas Park.

She said she felt every bone in her body reacting to the jump and jolt and her bones began to hurt her. She told him to stop but he continued riding her.

bam***bo root

While he was riding her, she said she discovered that he wanted to rape her. She reminded him that AIDS was around but the accused shouted that she did not have AIDS and he did not have AIDS. Williams raped her for about an hour and left saying he was coming back. She said she left her house and went some distance away and slept for the night in a bam***bo root.

The next day she came into Kingston and reported her ordeal to her children who took her to the police. She said she had 20 children but 10 of them had died.

Under cross-examination at the trial in the St Mary Circuit Court, the complainant said she could never have consented to have sexual intercourse with Williams because he was the same age as her grandchild.

Williams said at the trial that he and the senior citizen had an intimate relationship. He said he had sexual intercourse with her that night but she consented.

Williams appealed yesterday against his conviction and sentence but the Court of Appeal ordered that he should serve the 20-year-prison term.

With just two days left before the burial of Kevin Pusey, the Pusey family is in a race against time.

Pusey, who was 36, died in England on May 13 from what his autopsy report describes as "unascertainable death, which may be due to epilepsy". His family, however, is unable to afford the £2,500 it takes to fly his body home.

His sister told THE STAR: "We want him to be flown out here. No one from his family is there and maybe only a few relatives can afford to go. Maybe only my two nieces in America."

the burial he deserves

She said the family was trying to come up with the money and tried various other means before deciding to take their story public.

Though time is against them, she hopes something can be done so her brother can get the burial he deserves and his family, including his 10-year-old son, can get to say farewell in the right way.

"I don't want him to be buried in a foreign land. Him don't live dere fi no time. I was very close to him and I don't think I could feel it anymore if it was one of my own children," said Nerissa.

Though the family may be unable to afford a grand funeral, Nerissa believes it is best for Pusey to be laid to rest in a ceremony attended by relatives and friends, not strangers.

"If is even to nail up a likkle box and put him dung inna di hole. We want to know here im bury, so we can go and visit his graveside."

Anyone willing to help the Pusey family may contact his sister, Nerissa, at 863-6766 or 924-4291.

With allegations surfacing that the main witness in a manslaughter case was shot and injured by a relative of the accused, Resident Magistrate Vivienne Harris has called for steps to be taken to protect the witness and that the case file be completed quickly to accommodate a preliminary enquiry.

When the case against 27-year-old tractor driver Carlington Rowe of Retirement, St James, was mentioned in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court, the witness showed the court three bullet wounds he claimed to have sustained during the attack which, he said, was because of the case now before the court.

disturbed

RM Harris, who appeared quite disturbed by the allegations, denied bail for Rowe and ordered the clerk of court to contact the investigating officer, who was absent, so that the outstanding accident reconstruction report could be placed on file for the court to set a date when the matter could be heard. As a result, the case was set for today.

Francis was charged with manslaughter and failure to report an accident, stemming from an alleged hit-and-run incident in Retirement, St James, in September 2008, which claimed the life of six-year-old Jevaughn Sutherland. He was arrested in February of this year in St Mary.

fatal accident

His lawyer, Kenneth McLeod, told the court that his client knows nothing about the attack on the complainant and said his client was not the driver of the ill-fated motor vehicle involved in the fatal accident.

Allegations are that on September 19 last year, the child was walking to the shop when Rowe was seen speeding on the road, which was wet due to rain. The child was hit and thrown into the air before falling to the ground. The father of the child, who knew Rowe, and saw what had happened, called out to the accused but he did not stop. Jevaughn was rushed to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Rowe was held at a location in St Mary on February 25 and was subsequently handed over to the Montego Bay police.
