With a surge in the number of reports being made to the Office of the Children's Registry, the agency is moving to increase its efficiency in tracking data related to child abuse by introducing a case management system and engaging the services of statisticians.

In a JIS News release, Registrar at the Office of the Children's Advocate, Carla Edie, said the statisticians would help the agency analyse data and make projections.

"Based on the information that we get, we will be able to identify trends, what kinds of services are needed to address the issues facing the children and their families."

The employment of statisticians will also be accompanied by the introduction of a case management system, which will organise the reports and updates that the registry receives.

"So if somebody calls to say, 'How many children in the year 2008, between the ages five to six, were sexually abused', very easily, we'll be able to generate that kind of information," she said.

The Office of the Children's Registry has been in existence since January 1, 2007. It was established to receive, record and store data on the maltreatment of Jamaica's children, in keeping with the Child Care and Protection Act.

The Act, passed by Parliament in 2004, places responsibility on Jamaicans to report all types of child abuse, whether it is suspected or already happening. A person can be fined $500,000 or endure six months' imprisonment, or both, for failing to make a report.

"I'm doing it for the money", was what a British postman told narcotics police when he was held at the airport in Montego Baywith 3.9 kilograms (8.75lb) of cocaine disguised as cake mixes.

On Wednesday when the matter was brought before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court, Kenneth Francis of London, England, pleaded guilty to possession, dealing in and attempting to export cocaine.

The 43-year-old was sentenced to 12 months in prison at hard labour and fined $300,000 or 30 days for possession and $400,000 or three months for dealing in.

During a mitigation plea before Resident Magistrate Vivienne Harris, defence attorney Adrian Dayes said that his client is a single father and has incurred outstanding bank and student loans that he was unable to pay.

The facts are that he was attempting to check in at the Sangster International Airport to board a flight to England when a travelling bag he had was searched. Cocaine was discovered in six boxes labelled, cake mix. Under caution he told the police that he was trying to smuggle the contraband for money.

If the residents of Charlemont in St Catherine are speaking anything near the truth, then the two policemen who are being investigated for their alleged involvement in a gun salute will have a lot to explain.

On Tuesday, THE STAR reported that allegations are being investigated that two policemen were involved in a gun salute at a dance in the community on Saturday. The article stated that the dance was being held in celebration of a bar opening for a well-known don.

different version

However, irate residents of the community afterwards contacted THE WEEKEND STAR and sought to give their version of the story, which paints a rather corrupt picture.

The residents say there was no gun salute, but rather a barrage of shots which were fired to disperse the crowd in the hope that they would leave the dance and go to another venue, owned by the stepfather of one of the policemen.

"Not a thing nuh guh suh 'bout gun salute ... Di police dem not even know di man weh a keep di dance suh how dem fi a fire salute fi him?" a resident who claims to have witnessed the whole scenario, Ms Betty, questioned.

She said the policemen were simply trying to get the patrons to a go-go club which was not enjoying its usual number of patrons due to the keeping of the dance.

"Listen, is a big dance eno, di place block and 'cause everybody deh deh ... Nobody neva too deh a di go-go club suh a dat mek him come fire di shot dem inna di dance. Everybody from Charlemont know seh him step fada own the go-go club," Ms Betty explained.

Police say they are aware of the residents' claims, but add that it is too early to say which argument is correct as investigations are not yet complete.

gunshots

Reports said the Linstead police went to the dance in the wee hours of the morning after being alerted about gunshots being fired. After arriving, the cops saw two men who aroused their suspicion and they were searched.

The men were reportedly loud and boisterous and had to be taken to the Linstead Police Station, where a senior officer was called and their firearms taken.

Their hands were subsequently swabbed and the guns sent for forensic testing.

Cop impersonator sentenced

Omar Maitland, a 23-year-old man charged with impersonating a policeman, was sentenced in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Maitland, 23, a security guard from Lightbourne Road, Kingston 5, was arrested on January 2 at the Hilton Kingston hotel. He was later charged and pleaded guilty when he appeared in court.

The facts are that Maitland was behaving in a disruptive manner at the hotel and was spoken to by security personnel and the police. He told the police, however, that he too was a policeman, but was unable to provide identification to support his claim. He reportedly also had an imitation firearm in his possession.

psychiatric help

It was stated that Maitland was in need of psychiatric help, but a report from a psychologist said he was mentally fit.

When he appeared in court yesterday, Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey told Maitland that if he attempted anything similar in the future, he would go to jail. She told him that it was relatively easy to join the police force, but he had ruined his chances because he was now convicted of a crime.

Maitland was sentenced to pay $5,000 or serve six months.

Two killed in Westmoreland

The Frome Police in Westmoreland recorded yet another shooting death in less than a week, when Nathaniel Dixon Jr, a 29-year-old businessman of Burnt Savannah in the parish, was shot dead yesterday.

Reports are that Dixon returned home from a party about 2:30 Wednesday morning with a male relative. He went inside the house and was in the company of his girlfriend and a relative watching television when he decided to go outside to use the bathroom.

It is alleged that immediately after he left the house there were sounds as if there was a struggle and then shots were heard. He did not return to the house.

At daybreak, a search was launched and Dixon was found dead in a yard next door with a single bullet wound to his neck. A motive has not yet been established but his father, a police officer, was saddened by the incident.

Dixon's death came hot on the heels of another homicide in the same police division on Sunday. The police report that on the day in question, the dead body of Dave Campbell was found on his bed at Georges Plain.

A cousin got suspicious when phone calls to Campbell went unanswered. He went to the house to investigate and made the gruesome discovery. Campbell was shot and killed on his bed, through his bedroom window.

The cousin knew something was wrong when he noticed the lights at the house still on and the goats which would be taken to the field still in the yard.

Campbell was 40 and served as a security guard and an electrician. He lived alone

Residents of Mount Pleasant in Porus, Manchester, say the mob killing of a man alleged to have stolen four goats on Tuesday should serve as a deadly warning.

"Wi nuh like tief, people cyaa a work so hard fi dem cum tek weh a nuh fi dem ... A death before dishonour mi seh," one irate resident, Max*, swore.

Max's comment came in the wake of the death of 41-year-old Donovan Robinson from Mike Town, Manchester.

Police reports are that about 5 a.m., Robinson and two other men ventured into the community where they rounded up four goats and placed them into a waiting car.

Their actions did not go unnoticed, however, as residents who witnessed the act alerted others.

THE STAR was told that in a matter of minutes, the vehicle was swarmed by angry machete- and knife-wielding residents.

Two of the men then reportedly brandished guns and fired several shots before escaping in bushes.

Robinson, who was reportedly left behind, tried to drive away but crashed just a few metres away.

He was then held, chopped multiple times and the car set ablaze.

"Dem too bright ... Wi naw go tolerate dem foolishness ...Time too hard fi a lose yu earnings to tief, wi prefer limb dem up when dem try," another resident, Farmer Joe, said.

Kan. abortion doc killed in church;suspect held

The body of Dr. George Tiller is removed from the Reformation Lutheran Church inAP  The body of Dr. George Tiller is removed from the Reformation Lutheran Church in Wichita, Kan., Sunday,

WICHITA, Kan. Dr. George Tiller, one of the nation's few providers of late-term abortions despite decades of protests and attacks, was shot and killed Sunday in a church where he was serving as an usher.

The gunman fled, but a 51-year-old suspect was detained some 170 miles away in suburban Kansas City three hours after the shooting, Wichita Deputy Police Chief Tom Stolz said.

Although Stolz refused to release the man's name, Johnson County sheriff's spokesman Tom Erickson identified the detained man as Scott Roeder. He has not been charged in the slaying and was expected to be taken to Wichita for questioning.

There was no immediate word of the motive Tiller's assailant. But the doctor's violent death was the latest in a string of shootings and b****ings over two decades directed against abortion clinics, doctors and staff.

Long a focus of national anti-abortion groups, including a summer-long protest in 1991, Tiller was shot in the foyer of Reformation Lutheran Church, Stolz said. Tiller's attorney, Dan Monnat, said Tiller's wife, Jeanne, was in the choir at the time.

The slaying of the 67-year-old doctor is "an unspeakable tragedy," his widow, four children and 10 grandchildren said in statement. "This is particularly heart-wrenching because George was shot down in his house of worship, a place of peace."

The family said its loss "is also a loss for the city of Wichita and women across America. George dedicated his life to providing women with high-quality health care despite frequent threats and violence."

Stolz said all indications were that the gunman acted alone, although authorities were investigating whether he had any connection to anti-abortion groups.

Tiller's Women's Health Care Services clinic is one of just three in the nation where abortions are performed after the 21st week of pregnancy. The clinic was heavily fortified and Tiller often traveled with a bodyguard, but Stolz said there was no indication of security at the church Sunday.

Anti-abortion groups denounced the shooting and stressed that they support only nonviolent protest. The movement's leaders fear the killing could create a backlash just as they are scrutinizing U.S. Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, whose views on abortion rights are not publicly known.

"We are shocked at this morning's disturbing news that Mr. Tiller was gunned down," Troy Newman, Operation Rescue's president, said in a statement. "Operation Rescue has worked for years through peaceful, legal means, and through the proper channels to see him brought to justice. We denounce vigilantism and the cowardly act that took place this morning."

President Barack Obama said he was "shocked and outraged" by the murder. "However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence," he said.

At Tiller's church, Adam Watkins, 20, said he was sitting in the middle of the congregation when he heard a small pop at the start of the service.

"We just thought a child had come in with a balloon and it had popped, had gone up and hit the ceiling and popped," Watkins said.

Another usher came in and told the congregation to remain seated, then escorted Tiller's wife out. "When she got to the back doors, we heard her scream, and so we knew something bad had happened," Watkins said.

He said the service continued even after an associate pastor announced that Tiller had been injured. "We were just really shocked," he said. "We were kind of dumbfounded. We couldn't really believe it had happened."

Tiller had in the past endured threats and violence. A protester shot Tiller in both arms in 1993, and his clinic was b****ed in 1985. More recently, Monnat said Tiller had asked federal prosecutors to step up investigations of vandalism and other threats against the clinic out of fear that the incidents were increasing and that Tiller's safety was in jeopardy. Stolz, however, said police knew of no threats connected to the shooting.

In early May, Tiller had asked the FBI to investigate vandalism at his clinic, including cut wires to surveillance cameras and damage to the roof that sent rainwater pouring into the building.

In 1991, the Summer of Mercy protests organized by Operation Rescue drew thousands of anti-abortion activists to this city for demonstrations marked by civil disobedience and mass arrests.

Tiller began providing abortion services in 1973. He acknowledged abortion was as socially divisive as slavery or prohibition but said the issue was about giving women a choice when dealing with technology that can diagnose severe fetal abnormalities before a baby is born.

Nancy Keenan, president of abortion-rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America, issued a statement praising Tiller's commitment.

"Dr. Tiller's murder will send a chill down the spines of the brave and courageous providers and other professionals who are part of reproductive-health centers that serve women across this country. We want them to know that they have our support as they move forward in providing these essential services in the aftermath of the shocking news from Wichita," Keenan said.

After the 1991 protests, Tiller kept mostly to his heavily guarded clinic, although in 1997 he opened it to three tours by state lawmakers and the media. He wore a button that read "Trust Women."

The clinic is fortified with bulletproof glass, and Tiller hired a private security team to protect the facility. Once outside the clinic, Tiller was routinely accompanied by a bodyguard.

At a recent trial, he told jurors that he and his family have suffered years of hara**ment and threats and that he knew he was a target of anti-abortion protesters.

Federal marshals protected Tiller during the 1991 Summer of Mercy protests, and he was protected again between 1994 and 1998 after another abortion provider was assassinated and federal authorities reported finding Tiller's name on an assassination list.

Tiller remained prominent in the news, in part because of an investigation begun by former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline, an abortion opponent.

Prosecutors had alleged that Tiller had gotten second opinions from a doctor who was essentially an employee of his, not independent as state law requires. A jury in March acquitted Tiller of all 19 misdemeanor counts.

"I am stunned by this lawless and violent act, which must be condemned and should be met with the full force of law," Kline said in a statement. "We join in lifting prayer that God's grace and presence rest with Dr. Tiller's family and friends."

CAIRO A 25-year-old Egyptian man cut off his own penis to spite his family after he was refused permission to marry a girl from a lower class family, police reported Sunday.

After unsuccessfully petitioning his father for two years to marry the girl, the man heated up a knife and sliced off his reproductive organ, said a police official.

The young man came from a prominent family in the southern Egyptian province of Qena, one of Egypt's poorest and most conservative areas that is also home to the famed ancient Egyptian ruins of Luxor.

The man was rushed to the hospital but doctors were unable to reattach the severed member, the official added citing the police report filed after the incident.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with the press, added that the man was still recovering in the hospital.

Traditionally, marriages in these conservative part of southern Egypt are between similar social classes and often within the same extended families _ and are rarely for love.

A thirty-year-old carpenter said he recently received the shock of his life when a robbery attempt on Orange Street quickly turned into a freaky fight episode.

Romeolee Jones of a Corporate Area address said the incident took place about 7:30 a.m. on May 18, as he was assisting a co-worker in removing some furniture from the back of a van.

"So after we done, the rasta man and two others come up to mi and a say mi mus gi dem money, so mi tell dem mi nuh ave none, all mi did ave was a whistle in mi pocket," Jones said. "So him (rasta man) start fight mi and tek weh mi whistle and a stab mi wid it, so mi start run but mi drop."

Mi waan justice

Jones recalled that after he fell the robber bit him on his hand, palm, groin area and penis.

"Mi waan justice cuz dat nuh right. Yuh and a man a fight, wha him a bite yuh deh so fa?" Jones questioned as he spoke with THE STAR yesterday. He said that he had immediately reported the matter to the City Centre police.

A sergeant at that police station confirmed one aspect of Jones' story when the newspaper contacted the location.

bruises

"He came here on the day of the incident holding up the front of his pants and saying that he was bitten on his penis, but we never checked it," the sergeant said. "We rushed him off to the hospital because there were bruises and abrasions on him and he was bleeding from one of his hands." The policeman said that they advised Jones to come back after receiving treatment so an official statement could be recorded and an investigation launched. Jones did not return, however.

When contacted, a senior official at the Kingston Public Hospital's (KPH) patients affair department said he could not divulge information about a patient unless the said patient authorised him, in writing, to do so. He said, however, that he could confirm that the particular individual was treated at the hospital for injuries, which he would not specify.

Four police officers have been taken into custody following further investigation into the 2004 abduction and murder of Kemar Walters, 19, and Oliver Duncan, 35, from Washington Boulevard.

The disclosure was made in a release issued yesterday, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mark Shields said. The release said "The officers concerned are now in custody and will be interviewed in due course. Due to the fact that this is an active ongoing investigation the details of the officers will not be disclosed at this time."

The circular stated that the families of Kemar Walters and Oliver Duncan have been informed.

The new development in the matter comes some 14 months after the case was reopened by the Jamaica Constabulary Force following new information that was published in The Gleaner about the case. The case was initially closed in 2007 after the Crown said there was insufficient evidence to prosecute an accused corporal fingered in the disappearance of the men.

shocking information

However, the newspaper had published in-depth articles regarding the situation in February 2008, bringing shocking information of police corruption and the ultimate abduction of the men to the fore.

Reports of the controversial incident are that the police drove to the parking lot of the Washington Boulevard plaza on December 23, 2004, where they accosted the men. One of them was said to be involved in a car-stealing ring involving members of the police. Both men have been missing since. It is believed that they were abducted and subsequently murdered.

Bounty Killer - File

Last year's Sting has come and gone and saw Mavado and Vybz Kartel squaring off. But now, various members from the rivalling groups (Alliance and Portmore Empire) have voiced songs attacking each other.

The latest song that has sparked much discussion since its release last week is Vybz Kartel's When Since on Foxx's 'Life After Death' rhythm.

In the very explicit song, Vybz Kartel holds nothing back as he attacks Mavado, Wayne Marshall, Bling Dawg and Bounty Killer. He even goes as far as to stating that at least two of the members of the Alliance participate in oral sex.

Already one of the Alliance's members, Bling Dawg, has responded to When Since, saying that Vybz Kartel is hooked on ecstasy. In his song, he said: "You a di worse deejay 'cause yuh a repeat rhyme/ mediocre arguments caan phase elite line/ your style beneath mine."

Alliance leader Bounty Killer, however, said his crew members will not be spending time answering the disses from the Portmore Empire.

"Kartel a carry belly fi DASECA 'cause him cannot voice fi dem. Alliance nah answer nobody right yah now. Him (Kartel) a try create a likkle animosity. A nuh every time somebody seh 'A' we ago answer," Bounty Killer told THE WEEKEND STAR.

lyrical confrontation

Adding: "Certain time we nah inna certain mind frame fi certain foolishness. Mi tell Mavado seh low it (the lyrical confrontation), yuh see how long Mavado nuh do no gun song? Him sing Again and Again, den him sing High Unda."

And although, Bounty Killer does not have a song dissing the Portmore Empire, he had more to say.

"From a guy ago sing and tell my friend (in reference to Mavado) about him madda, me ago tek it personal ... a bare *u*king, *u*king, *u*king him (Kartel) a sing bout because he is a freak," Bounty Killer said.

Bounty Killer said Vybz Kartel was hurt by his comments in a previous interview with THE STAR, and did the song When Since as a result.

"Yuh sing bout Last Man Standing and we tek it, suh wah jump up inna him now? A di interview weh mi do and seh Mavado always three points ahead of him ... a dat hurt him. Mi know it hurt yuh dat Mavado is bigger than you, but hush," Bounty Killer said.

In addition to Kartel's lyrical assault, another Empire member, Lisa Hype, recently did a song, Dat Dem Gone To, in which she made reference to DASECA. The Alliance affiliated group's sexuality is questioned in the song when she deejays: "Ah straight people mi roll wid/That's why mi link Don (Corleon) and not DASECA."

When THE STAR spoke to Lisa Hype she said that there is another song on the way for the Alliance called Click Click Boom.

"I have a song in the making. They have song playing with me in. Me a di Teacha (Vybz Kartel) daughter and mi a nuh softers. Mi haffi mek dem know seh mi have the talent fi kill even a man," Lisa Hype said.

The song she is referring to is one done by Alliance's Hitman. In the song he said: "Lisa, yuh a woman or man?/ Mi nuh see no inna Kartel hand/ Everybody rate Addi/ Nobody nuh rate you/ How yuh fi diss my production crew?"

part of attack

But Lisa Hype and Vybz Kartel are not the only ones voicing songs. Portmore Empire's Popcaan and Blak Ryno have also voiced songs as part of attack.

Blak Ryno's song is Drive Thru Price while Popcaan did Roll Out and Bun Dem Skin.

Bounty Killer in his interview with THE STAR had quite a lot to say, especially about Blak Ryno.

"All di likkle one weh name Blak Ryno, guh call my name inna song, any weh him sing dat again, a box out teeth a gwaan. How him a guh talk seh Killa nuh buss nobody ... a who yuh fadda (Kartel) sey buss him? Di way how dem yute yah ungrateful dem cyan speak truth ... bout him a stinga, him a sting wid tongue. We have sum'n weh wi really sting," Bounty Killer said.

STABBED FOR 'BAD' HAIRCUT

It seems that getting the perfect haircut was very important to one man in St Elizabeth, who is accused of stabbing his barber when he saw what had been done to his head.

The man, the police say, is now in custody, while the barber has been hospitalised.

According to reports reaching THE STAR, on Saturday the 42-year-old veteran barber was conducting business as usual at his shop in Alligator Pond in the parish when the incident occurred.

What seemed to be a regular day on the job quickly turned into the near-death experience, leaving family members, friends and other residents of the community thanking God that the barber wasn't killed.

"Wi jus thank di Lord seh him nuh dead. Mi couldn't believe when mi hear wa gwaan all because a one trim," Gregory Billings, brother of the injured barber told THE STAR.

According to Corporal Noel Johnson of the Area Three police, reports received are that on the day in question, the man had opened his shop for business about 9 a.m. and his first customer stepped in. The customer reportedly requested a haircut and asked for some markings to be placed on his head.

dissatisfied

When the barber was through, however, the man was not satisfied with the look and before the barber could make corrections, a knife was drawn and he was stabbed.

Another barber who works at the shop, Shotty Mark, said the incident unfolded in the blink of an eye.

"Wi jus' open eno and di yute step in and seh him want a trim and some whole heap a mark-up mark-up ... Likkle afta dat a nex yute come een and me start trim him ... Mi only hear when di yute jump up and seh a wa dis yu put inna mi head a nuh suh mi want it," Mark recalled.

"Di barber jus kiss him teeth and seh a wah happen to da yute yah and by mi seh 'who dat' mi see him a hol him belly an a seh 'a wah do dah yute ya' an den di yute run off."

Corporal Johnson told THE STAR that the alleged attacker was held hours after the injured man had to be rushed to hospital. He is to be charged later this week.

The mother of the two-year-old boy who drowned in a tank near his home in Madra**, St Ann, on Monday has been charged.

THE STAR understands that 30-year-old Sherine White was charged on Tuesday night with exposing a juvenile to moral harm and danger.

She is booked to appear in the Brown's Town Resident Magistrate's Court later this week.

White was arrested by the police following the discovery of her son's lifeless body on Monday afternoon.

According to reports, the toddler, Demino Davis, drowned after he was left unattended while his mother went to run an errand.

Residents later found his body in the tank

Like most twins, 11-month-old Justin and Jordan have a lot in common. But its what they do not have in common that has a lot of people, including their parents, calling them a miracle of science.

I have twins, but theyre by different fathers, said Mia Washington.

The twins parents contacted FOX 4, wanting to go public with their story. Washington admits she had an affair that resulted in two babies, born at the same time, fathered by two different men.

Out of all people in America and of all people in the world, it had to happen to me. Im very shocked, Washington said.

The parents went to Dallas DNA Lab Clear Diagnostics after noticing the twins have different facial features.

According to the paternity test, theres a 99.999 percent chance Justin and Jordan do not have the same father, and zero percent chance they do. The lab has never seen this type of result, nor do they expect to see it again.

It is very crazy. Most people dont believe it can happen, but it can, said Clear Diagnostics President Genny Thibodeaux.

The constable and the driver of the motorcycle sustained severe injuries and were taken to the Black River Hospital where the driver was admitted in a serious but stable condition. The policeman was transferred to a Corporate Area hospital.

Kicking off the weekend on Friday night Mavado and Serani will be at the XL Center in Hartford, CT for Hot 937's Hot Jam 8 concert. Having struck a chord with listeners with their songs No games and So Special, Serani and Mavado are the only Dancehall acts billed to appear. Big names such as Soulja Boy, Bow Wow, Day 26 star alongside Dancehall's hottest stars, with new comers Kid Cudi (Day and Night) and Jeremih (Birthday Sex) also on the line-up. Serani is appearing at an after party in the West Indian Social Club in Hartford the same night after the show.

Alliance bad-boy Stein is also doing a 15 club tour of the us. He started off in Brooklyn and will end his tour in Atlanta, where he is schedule to perform along side the entire Alliance. Saturday the Alliance rolls into Boston's Club Lido, for a sold-out show starring Alliance Entertainment's 3 mega-stars Bounty Killer, Mavado and Serani. The promoter is also promising some surprise appearances!

Sunday of course sees Mavado and Serani jumping on stage inside the Giants Stadium in New York in front of 50,000 people. Bounty Killer's Scare Dem protege Elephant Man is also on the bill repping Dancehall, with Jadakiss, The Dream, Mary J Blige, Young Jeezy, T Pain and Friends and the Dipset Crew rounding out the rest of the bill. Summer Jam is traditionally full of surprises so appearances by any superstar are possible.

"Its the first time that HOT 97 has advertised Dancehall acts so heavily for Summer Jam," said Julian Jones-Griffith, manager for both acts. "HOT are even running ads just featuring the Dancehall artists! Its a giant step for the music and is certainly a culmination of all the hard work we've put into trying to break Dancehall into the mainstream over the last year, after many artists have put in the foundation work before us. Many people are looking at us like how did they do that? But hard work is certainly the key to success. "

While on the other side of the Atlantic Alliance Hot Head Busy Signal will embark on his second European tour this year. It has been a really hectic year for Busy Signal, while his Alliance counterparts are all busy touring the US, he has been busy putting in the work on the European scene.

Capping off a busy weekend for the Alliance, Bling Dawg, Flex and Kip Rich are all on the same bill in Atlanta at Club Intrigue AKA Club Aquarius on Saturday night.

The youngster who stole his father's Isuzu pickup truck and went on a fatal joyride in Portmore, St Catherine, late last month, killing three of his friends, is to answer to the offence in court today.

Speaking with THE STAR yesterday, Inspector Michael Llewellyn of the St Catherine South Traffic Department said the 15-year-old driver of the ill-fated vehicle was slapped with charges of causing death by dangerous driving, driving without a licence, driving without insurance coverage and driving a motor vehicle without the owner's consent.

The officer said that the matter appeared before a Resident Magistrate's Court last week where the teen was granted $300,000 bail and the matter transferred to the Children's Court.

Reports are that about 11:45 p.m. on the day of the accident, the teen stole his father's beige Isuzu truck from their Greater Portmore home and went for a spin with five friends on board.

The vehicle later crashed into a utility pole on Port Henderson Road, St Catherine. Three of the five passengers were killed. They were identified as Matthew Brown, 10; Crystal Robinson, 15; and Oshane Salmon, 14.

The young driver received injuries and was treated and released.

Inspector Llewellyn said they have since located one of two youngsters who had left the scene after the accident. That youngster has been receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained. The other child has not yet been located.

Police have arrested a U.S. Marine Corps recruiter on charges of felony pimping and kidnapping and are looking into whether he used sex with a 14-year-old girl to entice potential recruits.

Staff Sgt. Bryan Damone Cunningham, 33, of San Pedro pleaded not guilty to seven felonies last Thursday after police in Orange discovered the teenage girl in a car with Cunningham and two other men. The two men, ages 18 and 19, were potential Marine recruits, police said.

The girl, who has since been returned to her parents in Hemet, told police that she met Cunningham online and had sex with all three men. She also told police Cunningham wanted her to work as a prostitute and had tried to take her to Los Angeles County against her will.

Police said they are trying to determine if Cunningham may have been using the girl to entice Marine recruits.

Its not proven but when you look at it, this is a grown man, a Marine staff sergeant, said Hemet police Lt. Joe Nevarez. Why would he be taking them out to have sex with a 14-year-old girl?

Cunninghams attorney, Dane Levy, did not immediately return a call seeking comment Tuesday.

The two potential Marine recruits face felony charges on having sex with a minor.

Cunningham is being held on $1 million bail and has a court hearing June 18, said John Hall, a spokesman for the Riverside County district attorneys office.

NEW YORK (CNN) Two good Samaritans returned more than $275,000 that tumbled out of an improperly secured armored truck in Syracuse, New York, last week. But some not-so-good Samaritans seem to have walked away with another $60,000 that fell onto the street.
An armored truck inadvertently strewed bags of money on the ground in front of the Syracuse Antiques Exchange.

An armored truck inadvertently strewed bags of money on the ground in front of the Syracuse Antiques Exchange.

A Brinks armored truck inadvertently strewed more than a dozen bags of money on the ground in front of the Syracuse Antiques Exchange on Friday, according to Sgt. Tom Connellan of the Syracuse police department.

The bags slipped out of an open door on the side of the truck. Apparently oblivious, the driver proceeded to his intended destination, a Brinks facility a few blocks away.

David Jenks, the owner of the antiques shop, and Hanson Herring, who had just gotten a haircut at a nearby barbershop, Cuttin Up, were the first to approach the bags.

Herring said at first he thought the bags merely contained garbage. Only when he began to inspect one did he realize, Oh man, this is money.

The money was in all different denominations, from coins to $100 bills.

The two men then began to round up the bags and load them into plastic postal bins. Tim Taylor, an off-duty Syracuse police officer who happened to be browsing in Jenks antiques shop, assisted them.

A New York area shop owner confronted by a bat-wielding robber pulled a gun on the criminal - then voluntarily handed over $40 and a loaf of bread after the man collapsed in tears and said he just wanted to support his starving family.

The store owner decided to show mercy to the would-be robber, but only if he promised never to rob again.

'This was a grown man, crying like a baby,' Mohammad Sohail, owner of the Shirley Express convenience store about 65 miles east of New York City, told The Associated Press.

The man dropped the bread, picked up the bat and tucked the $40 into his waistband before fleeing, said Suffolk County Police Sgt. John Best.

Sohail said he was getting ready to close his store shortly after midnight on May 21 when the man in his 40s entered with a bat in his hand.

Sohail said he tried to stall for a moment and then grabbed a rifle he keeps behind the counter and ordered the assailant to drop the bat.

The would-be thief dropped to his knees and begged for forgiveness, Sohail said.

'He started crying that he was out of work and was trying to feed his hungry family,' he said. 'I felt bad for him. I mean, this wasn't some kid.'

He said he tossed $40 to the man, who then stood up and told Sohail he wanted to become a fellow Muslim. Sohail said he then pretended to swear the man into the Muslim faith and two ended up shaking hands.

He went to the back of the store to get some milk to give to the man, but when he returned the man had fled. He said he called police and reported the attempted robbery, but doesn't want to press charges if the man is ever caught.

A man described by Philadelphia police as a person of interest in the rape of an 11-year-old girl is in custody after being beaten by an angry mob.

Authorities say the 26-year-old man was grabbed by neighborhood residents Tuesday afternoon and beaten until police arrested him on an unrelated warrant. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. He was not immediately charged in the rape, which police say happened Monday morning in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia.

Police say the girl was walking to school when a man approached her and threatened to shoot her, then made her walk about seven blocks before attacking her in an alley.

From KYW1060

Officials say  26-year-old Jose Carrasquillo of
North Philadelphia was taken into custody at Front and Clearfield after
being grabbed and roughed up by neighborhood residents who held him
until police arrived.

Carrasquillo was listed in critical condition at Temple University Hospital.

Capt. John Darby of the police departments Special Victims Unit says the girl had just dropped off a younger sibling at daycare about 8:20am when she was approached by a white male in his 20s (depicted in sketch at right) with black hair and facial hair, wearing a white t-shirt and black shorts with red and white stripes.

Darby says the man started walking beside the girl, then told her he had a gun and threatened her if she did not cooperate.

Darby says the attacker forced his young victim to walk with him from the 3000 block of Kensington Avenue and through an alley off the 2000 block of E. Westmoreland Street to a back yard, where he raped her repeatedly.

Officials say the girl was so severely injured that she had to undergo surgery at St. Christophers Hospital for Children.

Have aliens left another calling card?

Conspiracists and Brits are all atwitter about a crop circle that appeared at an Oxfordshire barley field. Instead of circles, the creators have become far more artistic (or they've figured out how to use Earth landmowers). The "circle" is in the shape of a 600-foot jellyfish a first, as far as we know and the BBC has posted an aerial video of the creature.

Jellyfish crop circle appears in field ...

The overnight sensation launched Web searches for "jellyfish crop circle," "crop circles aliens," "crop circles conspiracies," and for the DIY crowd "crop circle patterns." Previous lawn artworks have appeared in the form of birds, butterflies, and, last year, the first 10 digits of pi (you know, 3.141592654).

OK, say this gra**y rendering isn't an alien self-portrait. Even so, the massive carve-out is impressive. Karen Alexander, a croppy (the name for experts in this, er, field), says this one's "absolutely huge roughly three times bigger than...most crop patterns, and extremely interesting. People have been aghast at the size of it. It is a complete monster."

What human motivations could lie behind this?

Four policemen, including an assistant superintendent, were yesterday arrested in connection with the mysterious disappearance of two men, five years ago, from the Washington Boulevard Plaza, St Andrew.

A release yesterday from Deputy Commissioner Mark Shields said the lawmen would be interviewed in due course, but because of the ongoing investigation their identities could not be disclosed at this time.

Speaking with The Gleaner yesterday, Assistant Commissioner of Police Leslie Green confirmed that an assistant superintendent of police has been jailed.

"But he has not been charged," said ACP Green.

The policemen were arrested after the top bra** of the Jamaica Constabulary Force reopened a case into the disappearance of Kemar Walters and Oliver Duncan, who were allegedly abducted on December 23, 2004.

The police reopened the case, following a Gleaner investigation which had revealed that members of the police force and civilians were involved in a major auto-theft ring at the time.

Possible link

The Gleaner investigation also suggested that Walters and Duncan might have been killed because of their involvement in the illegal operation.

At least seven members of the police force have now been implicated in the matter.

Prior to the reopening of the case, a corporal was taken into custody, questioned and released, while a sergeant was arrested and charged, but later acquitted in the courts.

Reports reaching The Gleaner are that the senior officer now in jail was attached to the Organised Crime Investigation Division at the time when the men went missing. He was recently transferred to another section of the police force.

A Westmoreland man charged with 13 counts of manslaughter, following an accident in 1998, had his bail extended in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Forty-year-old Norman Beckford appeared before the court as a result of an accident along the Bog Walk gorge, in St Catherine, 11 years ago.

According to Sergeant Osbourne Fearon of the St Catherine North Traffic Department, Beckford was driving a Toyota Hiace minibus from St Ann towards Kingston, with 15 passengers on board. When he reached a section of the Bog Walk gorge, he attempted to overtake a line of traffic and lost control of the vehicle.

The bus plunged into the Rio Cobre, which resulted in the deaths of the 13 passengers.

Following the incident, Beckford fled to England where he spent 10 years. He was eventually held and deported.

He is being represented by attorney-at-law Jean Williams, who told the court that her client's conscience would not let him forget the accident and that's why he went to England.

He is to return to court on August 17.

Bail extended for teacher

A 36-year-old teacher at John's Hall All-Age School in St James, charged with the murder of her husband, had her $500,000 bail extended when she appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

The matter was adjourned until June 16, pending the court's receipt of the outstanding post mortem report needed to complete the case file.

Maxine Tugwell-Brown, who was acting vice-principal at the time of the incident, was charged in March after she was accused of fatally stabbing her 46-year-old husband, Junior Brown, with whom she claimed to have had an abusive relationship.

Her defence, as presented by attorney Morrel Beckford when the matter first came before the court, was that her husband had attacked her and she acted in self-defence. He also argued that the incident should not be separated from the abusive incidents that led to the unfortunate death of Brown.

Tugwell-Brown had been with her husband for 16 years and had three children, one of whom died. She has taught at her present school for eight years and had been acting as vice-principal since January 2008.

violent dispute

Allegations as stated by Tugwell-Brown, the only witness to the incident, are that she had a violent dispute with her husband on the night of February 22. She alleges that he held on to her and threatened her. She said that she managed to pull away from him and run out of the house, and grabbed a knife as she exited.

He allegedly pursued her and told her to come inside. However, on seeing that she was armed, he stepped backwards. Tugwell-Brown said that she then ran towards him and stabbed him once in the region of the left shoulder. Neighbours took Brown to the hospital where he died.

Overseas-based Reggae Boy Khari Stephenson has expressed his delight at being back in the national fold.

"I am looking forward to it because it has been over a year since I have been a part of the national programme and it's always a great feeling to come back and represent the country," said Stephenson in an interview with Star Sports on his arrival at the Norman ManleyInternational Airport yesterday.

friendly game

Arriving with Stephenson was his clubmate at Norwegian Aalesunds, Demar Phillips. Jamal Campbell-Rice of English Championships side Barnsley, and Rodolph Austin of SK Brann completed the arrivals, who will join the rest of the squad, already in training, ahead of Sunday's friendly against Panama.

Stephenson, who last represented Jamaica against Trinidad and Tobago in a friendly game in 2008, added that he is also looking forward to working with national coach John Barnes and his younger teammates.

"It is always good to play with new footballers and even at my age you can still learn something new from the players and they can also learn something from me," Stephenson said.

"I think that with my experience out there the football will speak for itself and my presence on the field will show," he said.

Meanwhile, Phillips, who last represented Jamaica at the Digicel Caribbean Championships in December last year, said he is looking forward to Sunday's match.

"I am going out there to do my best because I always bring my A game whenever I wear the national colours," he said.

"It is not going to just be me alone, it's a team game and so the team has to go out there on Sunday and do their their best."

Pertaining to pro football, Phillips claims to be adapting well to the rigours of the Norwegian competition.

"It is a very competitive league and you have to be very strong and physical in Norway because they play similar to the England style of game," he said.

"I just have to always make sure that whenever I go out on the pitch I always to do my best."

Aston Villa eye Austin

June 5, 2009
Started By shawndj0 Comments

English Premier League outfit Aston Villa are reportedly keeping an eye on Jamaican International Rodolph Austin, as they hunt a replacement for Central midfielder Gareth Barry, who moved away from the club to Manchester City earlier this week.

According to a report carried on www.skysports.com Austin has admitted a move to the Premier League club would be 'tempting', but reaffirmed his commitment to the Norwegian club.

Austin told Dagbladet: "All players want to play in the Premier League, so of course me too. I didn't know that Aston Villa were here, but even if it is tempting, I am keeping to the contract I have in Brann."

Villa scouts are said to have attended Brann's match versus Stromsgodse on Tuesday in order to have a closer look at the 23-year-old central midfielder.

Brann sports director Roald Bruun-Hansen confirmed that Villa scouts had been at a few games, but insisted no concrete offers have been made.

"We have given Aston Villa tickets for some of our games, and know of the interest.

"But there are no concrete talks, and far from any offers so we are keeping our pace. It is normal for clubs to look at players and keep an eye on the market at this time."

Humble Lions, August Town stall

June 5, 2009
Started By shawndj0 Comments

August Town and Humble Lions were both stalled in their bids to secure promotion to top-flight football, following unexpected results in the National Premier League play-offs yesterday.

While Humble Lions were held to a 1-1 draw at the York Community centre by Brazil, leaders August Town went down 2-1 to last-place Wadadah at Jarrett Park. Already favoured to advance and needing only a win to do so, Humble Lions, who were tied with August Town at the top of the table with seven points, found themselves trailing early in their encounter.

Dwayne Gopaulsingh scored in the third minute for the visiting Brazil, and the visitors had things their own way until midway the second half, when a controversial penalty was awarded and Kimroy Davis scored the all-important equaliser.

disappointed

Both coaches were disappointed with the result, but particularly St Ann's David Pryce, who felt that referee Gregory Daley's call was influenced by the behaviour of the home town spectators.

The call was made after the Humble Lions captain, Tyrone Buddah, attempted to flick the ball over the head of defender Orlando Brown. The ball appeared to make contact with Brown's arms, but the referee's delayed reaction and his subsequent whistle appeared to coincide with the crowd's response.

"I think Humble Lions did enough to have scored a clean goal," Pryce said.

"The call is dubious and it hurts, especially the fact that we needed to win this game badly."

NOT HAPPY

Humble Lions coach, Anthony Pringle, was far from happy with his players, who he felt approached the game like they had already qualified.

"I am not happy with how we executed today," said Pringle. "We were not disciplined in midfield and I get the impression that they think that qualifying is easier than it is," he said. The coach is, however, confident that the team will get it right against Wadadah come Sunday.

All but eliminated from the play-offs, Wadadah sprang to life with their unexpected win over the leaders, and could still qualify by winning their next two remaining games. Oneil Selvin put the visitors in the lead in the 50th minute, but Donovan Bernard seemed to have rescued a share of the points for the visitors when he scored in the 73rd. Mark Williams, however, restored Wadadah's lead from the spot in the 79th minute.

Humble Lions now lead the standings with 8 points, August Town are second on 7 points, followed by Wadadah on three and Brazil on two.

Only hours before a game vital to their football careers, it would have been reasonable to expect the Tivoli Gardens trio of Roland Dean, Navion Boyd and Oraine Simpson to be twitching with nervous energy.

At stake against Haiti in a friendly international two weeks ago were precious places on Jamaica's team to the CONCACAF Gold Cup in July.

Yet Dean, Boyd and Simpson were calm, sharing jokes in the team's hotel lobby. Less than one week earlier their mood was very different. Then Tivoli, forced to win to keep alive their hope of clinching the Digicel Premier League (DPL) title, battled Arnett Gardens at home. For Dean and Boyd, the pressure on May 17 was bubbling over. The one-two Tivoli strike punch scored half of the team's goals, with Dean notching 19 and Boyd eight. But neither could take the field against their club's long-time rivals. Both were on suspension for an accumulation of cautions. When needed most, Tivoli's top marksmen would not be able to fire. And it hurt.

"It kinda did break me down," admitted Dean, "because I know that it's me and Navion Boyd, striking partners all season were playing, and the last game of the season, the most important game of the season, the both of us not gonna play."

ideal scenario

The equation was simple. Despite their roaring comeback to close the gap in the last part of the DPL campaign, Tivoli needed a win against Arnett. Still, if leaders Portmore United won against Harbour View in east Kingston on that same day, the west Kingston club would have lost anyway. Tivoli's ideal scenario was to win and hope Portmore lost or drew.

Yet without their top scorers, Tivoli's job became that more difficult. The supporters knew it too.

"The people were like, 'So who is gonna score the goals?'," Dean recalled. "They were kinda nervous, because they know that going into the game it was a must-win."

To compound the frustration, Dean, who only discovered he would miss the Arnett game the day before the 'Junglists' visited, was still bitter over the way he had been excluded. His final yellow card was not for violent, physical play, but dissent - talking - to the match official.

"Most of all, I was vexed bout that," the 27-year-old said.

For Boyd, the disappointment was even more. While Dean had already lifted Jamaica's top club title, the 22-year-old had never won. He had also been ejected from the Flow Champions Cup knockout semi-final, only to be absent from a final which saw the west Kingston team lose 3-0 to rivals Boys' Town. In addition, his coach Lenworth Hyde Sr had warned him to avoid further cautions.

"It was a whole heap of pressure on me," Boyd said, "because if Tivoli had lost the game, or even if we had won the game and Portmore (United) had won (the title), I think everybody would have come down on me and Roland because we were not out there to get the job done."

Boyd seriously thought of skipping the final DPL showdown at the Tivoli Sports Complex (TSC).

"At one point I was asking myself, 'Go to the game?'," he said.

30th-minute penalty

But the strike pair showed up, pinning their hopes on their teammates. Simpson was singled out. Dean and Boyd put the burden squarely on him. He didn't back away.

"I feel a lot of pressure," Simpson admitted, "because with them (Dean and Boyd) out, I did tell them that it was going to rest upon me. And they did tell me that too."

Simpson did not let them down. He calmly slotted home a 30th-minute penalty which would eventually prove enough to secure Tivoli's win. It did not immediately erase all the tension. Boyd and Dean turned their attention to the Harbour View Mini Stadium, where Portmore and the home team were locked in a goalless battle. Broadcast commentary from the TSC kept them up to date.

"I was more focused on the Portmore game," admitted Dean. "It was nerve-wracking though."

"From we scored, we just wanted Harbour View and Portmore match to just blow off," Boyd added. The final whistle from both games left Tivoli and Portmore locked on 72 points. But the west Kingston team snatched the DPL crown with a better goal difference. The relief was welcomed by the two missing forwards.

"It was one of the sweetest feelings, you know, in a long while," said Dean.

"Everybody's happy," Boyd added with a laugh. "People even forget that we weren't out on the pitch."

As for Simpson, the team's hero and a close friend of Dean and Boyd, well, he was just happy to return an outstanding favour. "They bailed me out nuff time, you know," he said smiling. "So you have to bail them out when you get the chance."

Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt has ruled out chasing an individual treble at the London Olympics in 2012.

Speaking on Tuesday, the 22-year old double Olympic sprint champion dismissed any possibility he would attempt the 100 metres, 200 metres and 400 metres.

"I never actually said that I could run three events, because that's a lot of load and I really doubt whether I can do that," Bolt told reporters at the launch of his Racers Track Club.

"I don't think that I could do that at one track meet, so somebody got it wrong along the line. I may be doing 100 and 200, or 200 and 400, but not all three."

alter timetable

Bolt's comments ended swirling speculation that the world double record holder would attempt the three events, in an attempt to add the quarter-mile to his already impressive treasure trove.

It had been suggested earlier this week that Olympic officials would consider altering the timetable to allow the Jamaican to chase a 100m, 200m and 400m hat-trick.

In fact, Nick Davies, IAAF communications director, had summed up the athletic body's view on the matter, when he was quoted as saying.

"If Usain continues to do amazing things, is super motivated, we'd be insane not to consider it."

promising

Bolt trains under the guidance of his coach Glen Mills at the Kingston-based track club, which also boasts the likes of promising young 100m sprinter Yohan Blake, and Olympians Marvin Anderson, Daniel Bailey of Antigua and Emmanuel Calendar of Trinidad and Tobago.

However, the club has recently attracted several athletes from outside the Caribbean and as far away as Africa. The sprint star said he saw this as a positive.

"I know a few of them come prepared every day to win," Bolt said.

"Some are here because of me, but they are targeting me and want to beat me, which is something that I welcome and I look forward to them coming here."

Buju heads to Europe

BUJU BANTON is scheduled to start a 40-city tour of Europe on Sunday to promote his Rasta Got Soul album which was released in May by his Gargamel company.

The tour will kick off in France, Tracii McGregor, president of Gargamel Music, told Tidbits Thursday. It has dates lined up for Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Belgium, Britain, Italy, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Spain, Portugal, Holland, Austria, Poland and Belgium.

Banton has encountered problems with gay rights groups in Europe in the past, who claim that some of his songs incite violence against homosexuals. But his European agent, Michel Jovanovick of MediaCom Agency, says those obstacles have been cleared.

"People are really excited to see Buju Banton deliver his message live," Jovanovick said.

Full-length release

Gargamel act New Kidz, veteran deejay Delly Ranx and seasoned session vocalist Nikki Burt are also part of the tour.

Rasta Got Soul was officially launched at the University of the West Indies' Mona campus in St Andrew. It is Banton's first full-length release without long-time collaborator Donovan Germain with whom he split in 2008. A Washington state man has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for having sex with his two dogs.

Troy Whitson entered an Alford plea Monday in Lewis County Superior Court, meaning he admitted no wrongdoing but acknowledged hed likely be convicted.

The 21-year-old from the town of Cinebar (SI-ne-bahr) is restricted from owning animals for two years.

His malamutes have been placed with new owners.

Prosecutor Michael Golden said Whitson is a member of a group known as Furries who identify with animals and dress the part in makeup, ears and tail.

Golden says Furries gather for social events but having sex with animals is not part of their normal behavior. He says two of Whitsons Furry friends witnessed the animal sex and turned him in.

A few years ago he was a popular deejay with many hit tunes and a unique catch phrase. Today however, he can be found on the streets of downtown Kingston selling roots drinks.

Dancehall artiste Snagga P**, who was known for songs such as Tatti, Cyaan Cook and Urkel Dance, has been creating a buzz in a new way, selling his herbal roots drink, Nile Valley Roots.

When THE STAR visited the deejay's vending spot, it wasn't like the early '90s when people were gathering to hear him deliver his comical lyrics, but the scene was no less frantic - though not as glamorous. The singer was kept busy tending to customers who were showing a lot of interest in his self-made products.

The singer, who now calls himself 'Mr Herbalist' could hardly find the time to speak to THE STAR, but managed to state why he embarked on his new path in December.

"I didn't choose the herbs, the herbs chose me. I do purgery not surgery. I take care of all the big bellies," he joked.

pressures of the economic

The singer insists that it was not an inability to cope with modern-day music or the pressures of the economic climate that forced him to start selling the drinks.

"From an entertainer to a herbalist? Think about it. This only shows that I am an all-purpose human being and I can do anything," he said.

He said, however, that on a regular basis, people do mockingly look at him and say that he has fallen from grace. "People see me every day, fans, artistes and say how much nothing nah gwaan for me because me gone into herbs, but I am more than comfortable," he added.

So comfortable is he that he has even sold his products to other artistes such as Beenie Man, Buju Banton, Anthony B and D'Angel, all of whom he claimed to have benefited from drinking his herbal mixtures.

"Is me take care of them. When them sick, is me a the first person them call," he said.

The switch in Snagga P**' career came after his own illness. "I was sick (nervous breakdown) and me go doctor and thing, take pill and nothing changed. My heart usually racing and the side effects were tremendous," he said. "Somebody tell me about a herb (Lignum vitae) and me drink it and it just bring back everything."

He has increased his knowledge of herbs through reading books and his experience of living in Germany.

In the meantime, Snagga P**, the deejay, said his musical career is not yet over. He is working on an 18-track album (which is yet to be named) and has been already giving it the much-needed promotion while selling his roots drinks.

While admitting that the music has changed since the Tatti days, the deejay believes that he can one day be popular again. His album, which will be released on the Nile Valley Roots record label, will be the beginning of reclaiming that fame.

As for his relationship with Shocking Vibes, the label he was once signed to, Snagga said: "We are family for life. I learnt a higher level of life and right there I got a direction of life and where I was going. I can't depart from that."

Carradine became famous in the 1970s when he starred in the television series "Kung Fu."

The rope was believed taken from the hotel room curtains, Bangkok Police Lt. Colonel Pirom Chanpirom said.

Investigators found no sign of a forced entry into Carradine's room, Chanpirom said.

An autopsy was being conducted at a Bangkok hospital, but no results will be available for another day, he said.

A Carradine family spokeswoman issued a short statement saying the family "is devastated by the news of David's passing."

"Circumstances surrounding his death are still unknown, and there will be no further comment until more information can be confirmed," the statement said.

B Is For Bob is the title of a compilation album by singer Ziggy Marley. On it, he reworks some of his father's (Bob Marley) most popular songs. It is scheduled to be released on June 23 by Island Records.

The website, Pollstar.com, reports that Ziggy, Bob's oldest son, re-tooled Three Little Birds, Small Axe and Stir It Up by subtracting instruments and adding others to give them a more contemporary feel.

Could You Be Loved, One Love/People Get Ready and Lively Up Yourself are also on B Is For Bob.

"My father's music spans generations and with B is for Bob, we give the youngest their very own Bob Marley record," Ziggy explained.

Bob Marley's children have enhanced several of his songs to reach a younger audience. Chant Down Babylon, a 1999 album, was produced by Stephen Marley, Ziggy's brother. It featured hip-hop acts performing digitally remastered duets with Marley on some of his biggest hit songs.

XXL reports:

After news broke last week that Jay-Z has been speaking to both Warner and Sony since leaving Def Jam Recordings, it seems as if the Brooklyn MC has found a new home. Actually it looks like he found two.

MTV News has confirmed that Jays new album, The Blueprint 3, will be coming out on the 8th anniversary of his original multi-platinum selling Blueprint. Rumored to hit shelves on September 11, the disc will be distributed by Atlantic Records, which falls under his past partners Lyor Cohen and Kevin Liles Waner Music Group company.

At the same time HitsDailyDouble reports that, while the deal has not officially been announced yet, Hov has decided to bring his Live Nation label, Roc Nation, to Sony.

As of press time neither Jay nor any of the aforementioned labels have issued any statements about the reported deals.

MONTEGO BAY, St James - Commissioner of Police Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin says a new traffic ticketing system is expected to come on stream in September.

Speaking at a National Consultation on Crime forum in Montego Bay, the commissioner acknowledged that the existing system is not working.

The police have long complained that they were being hampered by their inability to track motorists with outstanding tickets for traffic offences.

Additionally, it is alleged that the ticketing system is being manipulated by corrupt cops.

The new ticketing system, when fully operational, will see traffic police personnel being outfitted with hand-held electronic pads and similar systems on their motorbikes or in their motor cars. Once data is fed into the system, the offender will be issued with an electronically generated ticket printed on the spot while similar information is fed into a central databank.

The upscale community of Jacks Hill, St Andrew, was rocked with the attempted abduction of a businessman by three gunmen, who later engaged the police in a running gun battle. When the dust cleared, one of the gunmen lay dead and another captured.

Residents who spoke with The Gleaner said shortly after 10 a.m. the gunmen, who were travelling in a Toyota Corolla motor car, drove to the rear of the businessman's house. The police were alerted and responded promptly enough to engage the men in a gunfight.

Backup called

Reinforcements were called for and within minutes Hyperion Avenue, where the shoot-out ended, was crawling with police personnel.

The police also took into custody a household helper who was employed to one of the residents in the area. There are allegations that the attempted abduction was supposed to have taken place at least a week ago.

The Gleaner understands that the police learnt of the plot and put measures in place.
