The Togo national team bus has been machine-gunned by Angolan rebels on the Congolese border ahead of the African Nations Cup.

The attack happened just after players entered Cabinda.

Two players are reported to be injured and a Togolese sports ministry spokesman in Lome said that the bus driver had been killed in the attack. The Sparrow Hawks are in the country ahead of the African tournament, which gets under way on Sunday.

"The Angolan driver was killed on the spot," the Togolese official told Reuters.

"I am fine but several players are in a bad way," FC Nantes striker Thomas Dossevi told Radio Monte Carlo."We are still at hospital. We were attacked like dogs and had to hide for 20 minutes under the seats to avoid the bullets. We were shot, although we had two police coaches on our sides. There are two injured players and also some staff."

Giving more details on the attack, he said: ''We had just crossed the border five minutes before, we were surrounded by police buses, one in front of us another behind. Everything was fine and then there was a powerful burst of gunfire.

''Everyone threw themselves under the seats and tried to protect themselves but some couldn't escape the bullets. It lasted a good 15 minutes, the police fired back but really, it was hard to handle and it still is now. I'm shocked. When we got off the bus we were asking ourselves why us and not others? We were asking ourselves what had happened, we were crying and thanking God.''

The two players injured are reported to be GSI Pontivy goalkeeper Kodjovi Obilalé and Vaslui FC defender Serge Akakpo. Others reported injured are an assistant coach, a doctor and a journalist who was following the team. Alaixis Romao, the Grenoble player, told RMC he could count seven people injured.

According to RMC, the attack happened around 3.15pm just after players entered Cabinda, one of the four host venues of the African Cup of Nations. Rebels have been fighting for independence in the oil-rich area of the country.

The incident looks set to place in jeopardy the chances of Togo remaining in the country and Romao admits the players feared the worst and thinks Togo are now likely to pull out. "We are not thinking about possible actions yet, but it's true no one wants to play," he said. "We are not capable. Before everything we have to think of the health of our injured. There was a lot of *lo** on the floor. We haven't had a lot of updates about their health since they were dispatched to local hospitals. In this case, we think of families, of the people we love because we really could have died there."

Midfielder Richmond Forson believes the number of injuries could have been much worse had the gunmen not originally fired on the wrong bus.

''It was the bus carrying our baggage which was in front of us which they fired on the most,'' he told Canal Plus. ''They thought we were in the bus in front.

''Fortunately for us. That's what saved us. Then they fired on our driver and those who were in front. The windscreen was shattered by the first bullets. It's disgusting to take bullets for a football match.''

Emmanuel Adebayor was unhurt in the attack, Manchester City have confirmed. A statement posted on City's official website read: ''Manchester City can confirm that striker Emmanuel Adebayor is uninjured after this afternoon's attack on the Togo team bus in Angola. Club officials have spoken with Adebayor and though shaken by the terrible events, he is unharmed.''

Aston Villa also confirmed that their 26-year-old midfielder Moustapha Salifou was ''shaken but okay'' following the attack.

We previously reported that Lil Wayne would be playing the role of Jesus Christ in T-Pain's upcoming Cartoon Network special but now executives at the network have clarified Weezy's role. "Lil Wayne's character is still evolving. All we can say is that he is named Jesus and not Jesus Christ," an executive stated. Either way, Weezy will provide the voice for a character in T-Pain's "Return OF Freaknik," a one-hour special being produced for Adult Swim. The new show will debut on March 2st.

In related news, Lil Wayne released a new music video today. "On Fire" is a new single from Weezy's upcoming "Rebirth" album, which has been delayed multiple times and currently doesn't have a set release date, although Walmart.com recently reported it was pushed back to June 22nd.

Romulus, Michigan (CNN) -- A Nigerian man is "talking a lot" to the FBI, said a senior U.S. official, after what the United States believes was an attempted terrorist attack on an inbound international flight.

The initial impression is that the suspect was acting alone and did not have any formal connections to organized terrorist groups, said the official, who is familiar with the investigation.

The suspect, identified by a U.S. government official as 23-year-old Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, ignited a small explosive device Friday, shortly before a Northwest flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands, landed at Detroit Metro Airport in Michigan.

Passenger Jasper Schuringa told CNN that with the aid of the cabin crew, he helped subdue and isolate Abdulmutallab.

Abdulmutallab was taken into custody and is being treated for second- and third-degree burns on his thighs, according to federal law enforcement and airline security sources.

The sources told CNN that the suspect flew into Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam on a KLM flight from Lagos, Nigeria, and is not believed to be on any "no fly" list, although his name does appear in a U.S. database of people with suspect connections. He did not undergo secondary security screening in Amsterdam, an administration official said.

The administration official said there was no evidence that Abdulmutallab was a hard-core, trained member of al-Qaeda.

The Nigerian national, however, claimed to have extremist ties and said the explosive device "was acquired in Yemen along with instructions as to when it should be used," a federal security bulletin obtained by CNN said.

British counterterrorism police officers were searching houses Saturday in central London in relation to the airline incident, a Metropolitan Police spokeswoman told CNN.

The remains of the device used are being sent to an FBI explosives lab in Quantico, Virginia, for analysis, security sources said.

President Obama, who is spending the holidays in Hawaii, was briefed on the incident during a secure phone call with aides and instructed in a subsequent discussion with security advisers "that all appropriate measures be taken to increase security for air travel," White House spokesman Bill Burton told CNN. The president made no changes to his schedule, Burton said.

The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement Friday saying that air passengers "may notice additional screening measures put into place to ensure the safety of the traveling public on domestic and international flights."

Passengers described the brief moments of panic on board, as screams erupted and flight attendants ran for fire extinguishers.

Syed Jafry, who was sitting in seat 16G, said the plane was just beginning to descend when passengers heard a pop.

"Everybody got a little bit startled," he said. "After a few seconds or so ... there was ... kind of a flamish light and there was fire" and people around the immediate area began to panic.

Schuringa said he heard a big bang that sounded like a firecracker going off. He told CNN that he was the one who was able to subdue Abdulmutallab. CNN was not able to independently confirm Schuringa's account.

Schuringa said someone started yelling: "Fire! Fire!"

Then there was smoke. That's when Schuringa said he knew something was terribly wrong.

When he noticed that Abdulmutallab was not moving, he grew suspect. He jumped over the passenger next to him and lunged over Abdulmutallab's seat.

Schuringa said he saw that Abdulmutallab had his pants open and he was holding a burning object between his legs.

"I pulled the object from him and tried to extinguish the fire with my hands and threw it away," Schuringa said.
He said he managed to pull an object tucked between Abdulmutallab's legs.

"Water! Water," Schuringa screamed. He heard fire extinguishers as he pulled Abdulmutallab out of his seat and dragged him to the front of the plane.

Schuringa said Abdulmutallab seemed dazed. "He was staring into nothing."

Schuringa said he stripped off Abdulmutallab's clothes to make sure he did not have other explosives on his body. A crew member helped handcuff him.

He said other passengers applauded as he walked back to his own seat.

"My hands are pretty burned. I am fine," he said. "I am shaken up. I am happy to be here."

Jafry said the incident was under control within minutes, crediting the crew and nearby passengers for the rapid response.

Another passenger, Richelle Keepman, told CNN affiliate WDIV-TV that the experience was terrifying.

"I think we all thought we weren't going to land, we weren't going to make it," Keepman said.

One person was taken to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, hospital spokeswoman Tracy Justice said.

"All passengers have deplaned and, out of an abundance of caution, the plane was moved to a remote area," where the plane and baggage were rescreened, the Transportation Security Administration said in a statement. Passengers were interviewed by law enforcement authorities before being allowed to leave the airport.

No other suspicious materials were found on the plane or in luggage, the law enforcement and airline security sources said. The suspect had only carry-on luggage.

Another passenger on the Northwest flight transferred from the same KLM flight in Amsterdam, but officials found no connection between the two, the sources said.

The plane, an Airbus 330, landed shortly before noon. It was carrying 278 passengers.
Delta is the parent company of Northwest.

Drake is currently working on his debut "Thank Me Later" album and the Young Money artist has already worked with some of musics best, including Kanye West. With plans to hook up one more time before Drake finishes up the album, Kanye West has already teamed with Drake for his "Best I Ever Had" music video.

Not many fans liked the video and rumors even started that Kanye sabotaged Drake by directing the video but Drizzy says the video is exactly what he wanted and wishes he could have just had a bigger budget. "I dont really care about catching flack. Everybody is not gonna love everything we do thatll never stop me and Kanye from working together. Me and Kanye, when we do come together, its great. We have great chemistry. That definitely wont halt us from giving people what they deserve. In a couple of weeks Im going to Hawaii so I can work with him and No ID some more.
Lupe Fiasco recently shared some advice he has for up-and-coming rappers and music artists, saying he feels they should try to finance themselves before they sign with a major label. "Stay independent, if you can finance yourself, you put in that work ethic and do it on your own, I definitely think you should try that route," Lupe explained in an interview. "[At least] before you go into the professional kind of realm. But each one has its pros and cons. Sometimes it comes down to finance. You can't say that to a broke n*gga. Somebody flashing 50, 60 thousand dollars -- that means a lot, especially these days."

Lupe continued by saying artists should try to build up a buzz of their own before going to any label and although it's up to every individual, he feels going the independent route is the best. "You gotta do what's best for you but I definitely think that if you can muster it up and you got your focus and work ethic at least, you can pull something on your own."

Suge Knight hasn't made headlines in a while, but he took care of that last night. According to multiple reports, Suge was pulled over in California by the police last night (January 5th) after he failed to stop at a stop sign. Despite it being Suge Knight, no pedestrians were reportedly injured. It all took place around midnight in Beverly Hills but the incident ended with the infamous rap mogul getting a ticket and being very cooperative.

In related news, Suge recently talked about how he feels towards the current rap game. "I'm gonna be doing some movies, gonna do some music but you know mainly I've been around my environment," he explained in an interview. "You know, going back to the stomping grounds that I never left, enjoying it is basically what I've been doing. You know, you got a lot new artists out there. I mean Lil Wayne, his stuff is always hot. Even Jeezy had a cut I liked this year. There's a lot of artists I feel aren't really out yet, you got Glasses Malone. Glasses is on his way, same thing with Nipsey Hussle. Nipsey's gonna do well, Glasses is gonna do extremely well. Jay Rock is gonna do well. More importantly, these top guns nobody knows about, I got some sh*t where it feels like it's back to the basics kinda how it is when you feel the music, it's not like so commercial."

TAMPA - Jamaican reggae singer Buju Banton will be held without bail on drug charges while his lawyer fights to remove a detainer placed on his client by immigration officials.

That means Banton will miss the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles later this month. His album, "Rasta Got Soul," is nominated in the Best Reggae Album category. Banton has sparked controversy over lyrics that some contend advocate violence against gay people.

Banton, 36, pleaded not guilty this afternoon to federal charges that he conspired to buy cocaine from an undercover law enforcement officer in Sarasota last month.

U.S. Magistrate Anthony Porcelli ordered the singer held without bail after defense attorney David Oscar Markus said he would not oppose the government's request that Banton be detained. Banton's real name is Mark Myrie.

Markus later explained that there was no sense in seeking bail when immigration authorities have placed a detainer on Banton, who is in the United States on an entertainer visa.

Markus said he will fight to have the detainer lifted and then seek bail on the criminal charges. He told reporters his client will fight the charges and will not enter into any plea deal with prosecutors.

"We will be going to trial," Markus said.

"He did not commit the crimes he's charged with," he said. "He was not in any conspiracy."

Markus also decried the immigration detainer, saying, "There should be a presumption of innocence. Instead there is a presumption of guilt in immigration." He said there is "no question" his client would be allowed to post bail if not for the detainer.

The criminal case is set for a status conference in February and tentatively set for a March trial. Although cases often don't go to trial so quickly, Markus said he would push for the case to proceed swiftly.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, Banton contacted a confidential informant about a possible cocaine purchase. The next day, Banton and other men met with the informant at Sarasota's La Tropicana de Havana restaurant, where the DEA and local police had set up surveillance.

Eventually, the group went to a warehouse to make the cocaine deal, according to an affidavit. Authorities had outfitted the warehouse with audio and video recording devices.

Music industry analyst Clyde McKenzie, who helped fashion the careers of dancehall stars Beenie Man, Tanto Metro and Devonte, told a December 22 Editors' Forum at The Gleaner's North Street offices, that recent incidents involving dancehall acts in Europe and North America have hurt the genre's image.

"The business model for entertainment has changed dramatically and the emphasis is now on touring. That is the most lucrative segment on the value chain.

"But more and more doors are closing on our artistes, and that is a significant problem," McKenzie commented

"The doors are being closed as far as immigration is concerned, whether it is the perception about violence or homophobia. You find that some Caribbean territories are refusing to have artistes from Jamaica on their soil," McKenzie said.

With record sales taking a dive due to the growing digital market, touring has become invaluable for Jamaican performers.

Those prospects were dealt a big blow recently in the US, which remains the most lucrative live-show market for many dancehall and traditional reggae acts.

In November, the United States citizens and immigration services announced stringent requirements for visa approval.

The new policy calls for artistes to present the duration and itinerary in order to be granted an 'O' (for solo artiste) or 'P' (for group) visa to tour the US.

Previously, performers applied for a work visa which, if granted, would cover the artiste for as long as three years.

According to Billboard magazine, British rapper 'Speech Debelle' did not meet the requirements of the new regime and was refused a visa to perform in the US in November.

Stay clear of controversy

McKenzie is concerned that the Economic Partnership Agreement, signed by the European Union and Caribbean countries in April 2008, may have similar implications if dancehall artistes do not stay clear of controversy.

Under the agreement, Cariforum states will have duty-free and quota-free access to all goods exported to the EU market, except for sugar, rice and bananas.

It also opens 94 per cent of the EU's services (including leisure) sector to the Caribbean.

"The Europeans are finding a number of reasons and setting up a number of different structures to prevent our artistes from going there," McKenzie said.

"So the days when a guy (artiste) had some immigration issues but a promoter had money to spend (to get them in the country), those days are gone because they (promoters) now have to be licensed."

KiD CuDi recently talked about the shady moves and business ways of the music industry and even attacked some artists that are trying to ruin his name. During a concert in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the freshman rapper told the crowd his thoughts on what is currently going on. "They trying to make me look like the poster boy for violence and ignorance," Cudi said. "I tell motherf*ckers I'm the poster boy for honesty, realness, anarchy, I don't give a f*ck about this business." [KiD CuDi - Talks About The Music Industry Live In South Carolina - Watch Here]

Cudi continued by talking about other artists. "I'm the truest motherf*cker in this business and people trying to destroy me. All these other n*ggas that y'all probably fans of is sucker a** n*ggas, I met them. N*ggas I was a fan of when I was buying their CDs, I'm not a fan of they music no more. Move over Jay-Z and Rihanna, theres a new prodigy in the making! Rapper 50 Cent has pledged to help British singer Jamelia crack the US market by signing her up to his record label.

After meeting at the premiere of his new movie Dead Man Running last October, 50 Cent was so smitten by the singer that he has taken her under his wing. He thinks she is sexy, talented and has the right personality and talent to be huge in America, says a source. He wants to make her the new first lady of G-Unit, as it has no female artists.

Jamelia has already been busy in the US, working on hew new album.
Thanks to astronomic word-of-mouth, inflated 3-D ticket prices, andconsecutive holiday weekends that began on a Friday, "Avatar" continuedits seemingly unstoppable climb to the Hallelujah Mountains of U.S. andglobal box office.

PHBewFGGXOrzFI_1_l.jpg

According to estimates from Hollywood.com Box Office, James Cameron'ssci-fi opus grossed $68.3 million over New Years weekend, a tiny 10percent drop from Christmas weekend for a $352.1 million domestic total-- easily the biggest third weekend in the U.S. ever (2002's"Spider-Man" had held the record with $45 million).

Much more impressively, in just 17 days, "Avatar" has surpassed $1billion in the global box office. To put that in perspective, it took"The Dark Knight" pretty much its entire theatrical run just to make itto that milestone. (Another landmark: $66.4 million of "Avatar's"worldwide total is from IMAX theaters, a record for the mega-screenformat.)

"Avatar" wasn't the only film to ring in the new year with seriousbox-office bounty, either. "Sherlock Holmes" sleuthed out an elementary$38.4 million for second place, a 41 percent drop for $140 milliontotal.

Hot on its heels, "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" chirped to$36.6 million, dropping just 25 percent for $157 million total andthird place. (So what will the inevitable third film be called? TheSecond Squeakquel? The Threakquel?)

"It's Complicated" fell a bite-sized 15 percent, cooking up $18.7 million for fourth place and $59.1 million total.

And in fifth place, "The Blind Side" actually improved upon its totallast week, rising 8 percent for $12.7 million and $209.1 million total.(As EW noted yesterday, this means star Sandra Bullock is the onlyactress ever to have a film marketed on her star power alone pass $200million in U.S. box office.)

In fact, with no major debuts to steal away fresh audiences, it wassimply a fabulous weekend to be in movie theaters, period. "Up in theAir" pitched down an imperceptible 3 percent with $11.3 million and $45million total.

"The Princess and the Frog" hopped up 11 percent with $10 million and$86 million total. Even certified turkey "Did You Hear About theMorgans?" was up 4 percent, bringing in $5.2 million for a (stillwoeful) $25.6 million total.

Overall, the top ten box office was up 70 percent from last year, when"Marley and Me" was barking its way into filmgoers' hearts.

LAKELAND, Florida (AP) -- In 2006, Abraham Shakespeare -- a truck driver's assistant who lived with his mother -- won $30 million in the Florida lottery. His good fortune may have cost him his life.

Shakespeare vanished months ago. His mother hopes he is somewhere in the Caribbean, lying on a beach and enjoying the good life away from all the hangers-on who were constantly hitting him up for money.

The sheriff has a more ominous theory: Shakespeare was killed.

"There are a lot of odd and bizarre circumstances in this case," Sheriff Grady Judd said. "We fear and are preparing for the worst. We're working this case as if it were a homicide."

Shakespeare, 43, won the big jackpot after buying a lottery ticket at a convenience store in a town called Frostproof, claiming later that he gave the last US$3 in his pocket to a homeless man just before the winning numbers were announced.

Shakespeare -- who had a criminal record that included arrests and prison time for burglary, battery and not paying child support -- took a lump-sum payment of US$16.9 million instead of annual instalments.

He bought a Nissan Altima, a Rolex from a pawn shop, a US$1-million home in a gated community. He talked about starting a foundation for the poor and insisted the money wouldn't change him.

"I'm not a material person," he said in 2007. "I don't let material things run me. I'm on a tight budget."

The money quickly caused him problems.

A former co-worker sued him in 2007, accusing Shakespeare of stealing the winning ticket from him. Six months later, a jury ruled the ticket was Shakespeare's.

Then there were the people constantly asking him for a piece of his fortune.

"They didn't wait. They just came right after they found out he won this money," his mother, Elizabeth Walker, said recently.

She said her son was generous, paying for funerals, lending money to friends starting businesses and even giving a million dollars to a guy known only as "Big Man".

Not long after he bought the million-dollar home in early 2007, he was approached by a woman named Dee Dee Moore, said family and officials.

Moore -- who could not be reached by The Associated Press -- said she was interested in writing a book about Shakespeare's life. She became something of a financial adviser to Shakespeare, who never graduated high school.

Property records show that Moore's company, American Medical Professionals, bought Shakespeare's home for US$655,000 last January. His mother said the last time she saw him was shortly afterward, around her birthday in February.

The sheriff said the last time anyone saw Shakespeare was in April -- but it wasn't until November 9 that he was reported missing by a police informant.

And the story gets more bizarre.

According to The Ledger of Lakeland, the 37-year-old Moore contacted reporters at the newspaper in April, saying Shakespeare was "laying low" because people tried to suck money out of him.

That made sense to Shakespeare's mother -- sort of. "I remember once, talking with me over the phone, he said he might go to Jamaica," she said.

On December 5, a sobbing Moore told The Ledger that she helped Shakespeare disappear, but now wants him to return because detectives were searching her home and car and looking for *lo** on her belongings.

One reason he wanted to leave, she said, was a child support case for a child he allegedly fathered after winning the lottery. "Abraham sold me his mess to get a better life," she told the paper.

She even gave the paper a video that she said she took of Abraham. In the video, he says he is tired of people asking him for money. "They don't take no for an answer," he says.

"So where you wanna go to?" Moore asks in the video.

"It don't matter to me. I'm not a picky person," Shakespeare replies.

Moore told the paper that she took the video to "protect herself".

Sheriff's officials won't comment on Moore's involvement in Shakespeare's life.

The sheriff said that Shakespeare spent the bulk of his lottery winnings. The fact that he didn't call his mother on Christmas reinforces the theory that Shakespeare is not just hiding, Judd said.

"I hope so much that he is alive somewhere," said his mother. "And I want people to know, if they ever win the lottery, I hope they know how to handle the people that come after them. They can be dangerous."

Wiseman, who had been in declining health, died Monday at his home in Manhattan, his daughter, Martha Graham Wiseman, told The New York Times and Los Angeles Times.

http://www.latimes.com/media/photo/2009-10/49967939.jpg?title=Joseph+Wiseman,+1918-2009

A screen and stage actor, Wiseman's film credits include "Detective Story" (1951) and "The Unforgiven" (1960). He also had guest roles on television shows "Law & Order," "The Streets of San Francisco," "The Twilight Zone" and "The Untouchables," according to The New York Times.

He is likely best known, however, for his villainous role in "Dr. No," the first in a long string of James Bond movies. The 1962 film introduced Sean Connery as James Bond and also starred Ursula Andress.

Wiseman was born in Montreal on May 15, 1918. He moved to the United States with his family when he was a boy.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Wiseman started acting when he was a teenager, getting his start in summer stock.

In 1938, he was given a small part in his first Broadway play, Robert E. Sherwood's "Abe Lincoln in Illinois."

Wiseman's other Broadway credits include "Joan of Lorraine" (1946), "Antony and Cleopatra" (1947), "Detective Story" (1949); and most recently in the stage adaptation of Abby Mann's film "Judgment at Nuremberg" (2001).

"Stage acting was what he wanted to be remembered for," Wiseman's daughter told the Los Angeles newspaper.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. A Connecticut man has pleaded not guilty to charges he set his girlfriend on fire and tried to set her 12-year-old daughter ablaze.

Fifty-year-old Howard Stewart of New Haven appeared in court Tuesday. He's charged with arson, assault and other crimes.

Police say Stewart doused 35-year-old Christina Lee and her daughter with an accelerant and set Lee on fire on Nov. 15. They say the girl had accused Stewart of abusing her and he argued with Lee about the allegation.

Lee remains hospitalized with burns on about 40 percent of her body. Police say the girl escaped unharmed and rescued the 3-month-old daughter of Lee and Stewart from the burning house.

Stewart is to return to court Dec. 9. He's being held on $2 million bail.

A policeman "recalling" and "remembering" who had robbed him at gunpoint led to the acquittal of the man who was convicted of the crime.

Dwayne Frater, bus conductor, of a Spanish Town Road address, Kingston, who was serving a nine-year-prison sentence for illegal possession of firearm, housebreaking and larceny was freed by the Court of Appeal.

Frater was convicted in October 2006 and was in prison awaiting the outcome of his appeal.

A policeman who was the complainant in the case had testified that in July 2004, Frater brandished a gun and forced him to let him into his house. He said he and his uncle were robbed of $4,000 and a mobile phone.

He said while Frater was in the house, another man came inside and searched the house. The policeman said under cross-examination that from the time Frater came into the house to the time when both men ran away from the premises was about ten to 15 minutes.

On August 2, 2004, the policeman was on a bus and when the conductor began collecting fares he said he remembered he had seen the conductor somewhere. He said that when he 'recalled, he could remember' that the conductor was the man who had robbed him. He came off the bus and made a report at the Spanish Town police station.

The policeman said that on August 6, 2004 he was at the police station when Frater was taken there. He identified him as the person who had robbed him at gunpoint.

Attorney-at-law, Everton Bird, who represented Frater argued on appeal that the judge was wrong in reaching the conclusion that the identification of the accused was unassailable. Bird said the evidence was poor and unacceptable. He said the verdict was flawed because the judge accepted witnesses for the prosecution as being truthful without examining their credibility

The Court of Appeal said it was not satisfied about the circumstances under which the identification took place on the bus because the policeman's "recalling and remembering" demonstrated that he was in doubt.

(CNN) -- A Massachusetts grand jury has indicted a 98-year-old woman, accused of strangling her 100-year-old nursing home roommate, on a second-degree murder charge.

Prosecutors say Laura Lundquist killed centenarian Elizabeth Barrow, a resident of Brandon Woods Nursing Home in Dartmouth, after the two women had an argument over a table Lundquist had placed at the foot of Barrow's bed.

Barrow was found dead September 24 with a plastic shopping bag tied loosely around her head, according the Bristol County district attorney's office. An autopsy indicated Barrow had been strangled.

Barrow complained that the table obstructed her path to the bathroom, authorities said. When a nurse's aide moved it, Lundquist punched the aide and grumbled that her roommate "might as well have the whole room," prosecutors said.

District Attorney C. Samuel Sutter said Barrow repeatedly complained that Lundquist was making her life "a living hell" in the weeks leading up to the woman's death, and that Lundquist remarked that she would outlive her roommate.

A nursing home spokesman said the facility twice presented Barrow with the chance to change either rooms or roommates, but she declined each time. He compared the pair to "sisters," saying they took "daily walks together ... ate lunch together every day, and were heard at night saying, 'Good night, I love you,' to each other."

Lundquist's attorney, Carl Levin, contends his client was not involved in Barrow's death, saying, "We maintain her innocence."

A superior court judge granted a motion to send Lundquist to a state hospital for a competency evaluation. An arraignment will be held only if Lundquist is found competent to stand trial.

Dr Walton Small... ISSA's chairman.

Andre Lowe, Senior Staff Reporter

Organisers of the ISSA/ Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships, will be forking out in excess of $10 million towards the celebratory events leading up to the four-day spectacle which will be staged for the 100th time later this year.

Regarded as possibly the best meet of its kind in the world, next year's staging will take on special significance, as organisers plan several events such as a 100k torch run, an awards banquet and a book launch, documenting the history of the championships around the event.

expense merited

President of the Inter-Secondary School Sports Association (ISSA), Dr Walton Small, is convinced that the magnitude of the event merits the funds being spent. He also pointed out that this is not included in the over $30 million that will be spent towards the actual staging of the meet itself.

"The entire celebration is going to run us over $10 million, but we think that it's worth it. This money has nothing to do with the cost to stage the actual Champs, just the celebrations leading up to it, but again we think it's money worth spending," said Small.

The majority of the funds will be used to publish a book, which will feature several exclusive photos, stories and other important historical information on the championships, spanning the entire century.

It will actually cost ISSA in excess of $5 million to publish the book.

"We will also be launching a book. This is going to cost us a significant amount of money but we think that it's important that we document the activities of the championships over the 100 years," said Small.

"It's going to cost us over $5 million; we are in the process of getting information from people who have that kind of information. We have paid upwards of $750,000 just to get a piece of information, but we think that it's a very good investment."

profits

Small, who is also the principal of Wolmer's High School for Boys, pointed out that the money for the celebratory activities will be taken from the actual profits from previous stagings and that the participating schools have agreed to have the funds, which would normally be shared between them, used to acknowledge the centenary.

"We are going to be taking these funds from out of our usual profit that we usually make at the Champs. We would normally re-flow to the schools but they understand that this is the centenary celebrations and we ought to celebrate it accordingly," said Small.

He added that preparations for the March 24-27 meet, which will be staged at the National Stadium are well advanced.

"Preparations are going great. As soon as the last Champs were over we started to plan because we recognised that the centenary celebration is something that the people wanted and that it could not just be any ordinary celebration," said Small

The St Catherine North police say they are now pursuing 40 men who are wanted for several sexual offences in the division.

Among the offences for which the persons are wanted are rape, carnal abuse and incest.

Reports reaching THE STAR are that the men are wanted for 30 cases of carnal abuse, nine cases of rape and one case of incest with intent to rape.

Operations officer for the division, Deputy Superintendent (DSP) Stephen Moodie, said that the police are placing emphasis on capturing these men.

"The offences for which they are wanted are very serious and are being treated as such. Therefore, we are making special effort to bring them to book," DSP Moodie said.

The high level of sexual offences being committed in the parish has not gone unnoticed in the courts, as several resident magistrates and judges have commented on the problem.

Up to press time last night, local police could not confirm or deny that a Jamaican ship carrying one tonne of cocaine was seized by Dutch authorities in The Netherlands last week.

The drug, with a reputed street value of 30 million, was found on the ship transporting Whisky, said a report from Reuters.

However, Whisky, a product made in Scotland, Canada and Tennessee in the United States, is a drink that is not exported from these shores.

Awaiting conformation

"Head of Transnational Crime, Superintendent Warren Clarke, is aware of the matter and is trying to link with Dutch authorities and Interpol to get an exact brief on the seizure," head of communications at the Constabulary Communication Network, Karl Angell, told The Gleaner last night.

He said, however, the superintendent's efforts were constrained by the fact that it was night in The Netherlands. "By today, we should be able to confirm or deny the story," he added.

The Reuters report quoted Dutch authorities stating this was their largest seizure ever from the island nation. It also said that the 1,100 kilos of the drug had already been destroyed.

"We've had bigger seizures but not from Jamaica," a spokeswoman for the public prosecutor said.

The report said that a special team comprised of seaport police, customs, the financial crimes investigation service and the public prosecutor's office found the container last week in Rotterdam, Europe's biggest port.

The container was targeted for an in-depth search based on a risk analysis of customs, and was immediately identified as suspicious by a drug dog.

Police arrested five men on Monday at the warehouse in Amsterdam where the container was delivered.

A KFC ad in Australia has led some on the Internet to accuse the company of being racially insensitive. The ad, part of the company's "Cricket Survival Guide" promotional series, features a young white Australian at a cricket match sitting in a sea of dark-skinned fans loudly cheering, presumably for the opposition. The Australian, known as Mick in the ads, remarks, "Need a tip when you're stuck in an awkward situation?" He then shares a big bucket of KFC with them, which seems to help matters. He ends by telling the camera approvingly, "Too easy." Read more...

It appears that the casket that was ordered by deejay LA Lewis for a clash with Mr G will finally be used.

Brite Lite Funeral Services' owner Tommy Thompson is planning an event later this month where the two artistes will face off lyrically.

At Sting 2009 at Jamworld in Portmore, St Catherine, the $200,000 casket was on stage waiting and Mr G, fully clad in black, was in attendance but LA Lewis was missing in action.

Now Thompson is making arrangement for the two artistes to meet on a new yet-to-be named stage for a clash of comical proportions. He told The STAR, "In di streets everyone wants to see what will happen, a lot of people are still talking about it, so I'm looking to have a clash party."

According to Thompson, he has contacted both parties who are willing to clash, and he is currently awaiting confirmation of a venue, possibly outside of Kingston, at the end of January. The event, Thompson said, will be a party vibe but will also be the final settlement between the two who had agreed to lyrically duke it out in exchange for LA Lewis dropping criminal charges he had earlier filed against Mr G after they had a physical conflict.

After failing to turn up for Sting, LA Lewis in an interview with The STAR said that he didn't 'chicken out' from the clash but chose not to attend because he was not satisfied with how the promoters dealt with him. According to Lewis, the demands he made for a tour bus and money for costumes for his entourage were not met by the promoters, among other reasons.

the clash will happen

Thompson, no stranger to promoting events, is now promising patrons that his event will be different and the clash will happen. "I can tell you widdout any question signs if I say it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen. I have never let the public down," Thompson said.

He added, "We still have the casket (which was commissioned by LA Lewis), still around for use, waiting for the owner to rest in peace."

When contacted, Mr G confirmed that he is still willing to clash as he says persons have been plaguing him in the streets to settle the argument. He said, "Yea man, me still a clash, a nuh me chicken out. Everybody still waiting to see it, mi can't walk in peace on di road."

Mr G has even penned a song for LA Lewis to be released soon called To-ma-artist, in which he says Lewis has "tricked' people into believing he's a deejay when he is not". Thompson says he is also hoping to see a clash between female deejays Spice and Lisa Hyper and is looking to contact the two about that.

Meanwhile, Lewis said he is ready for the clash, adding, "Me well waan kill Goofy."

Curvy Kate Winslet has topped a national poll to find the perfect celebrity body of 2009.

Former Casualty actress and Slimming World Woman of the Year, Rebecca Wheatley, who herself lost over 12 stone with the slimming club, believes thismarks a shift in people's perception of what is attractive - especially for women, with whom Winslet scored two thirds of her votes.

"It's fantastic to see that finally women seem to be aspiring towards a healthy body shape that is realistic and achievable," she says.

"Kate Winslet has always spoken out about the importance of accepting your body. After all, healthy women come in all sizes. It's definitely a step forward that rather than persuading women to set their sights onbeing super thin, which can lead to misery when they fail to achieve their target, more celebrities are encouraging inner confidence and apositive body image and showing women how they can be happy with their shape. I found my positive body image at my Slimming World group, where you're able to choose the weight you want to be without fear of judgement. I'm now a healthy size 12, and loving it."

Dr Jacquie Lavin, Slimming World's Head of Nutrition and Research, added: "It shows a positive shift that women are more likely to see Kate Winslet and Kelly Brook as the ideal body shape rather than Kate Moss or Victoria Beckham and perhaps suggests that it's not beingskinny' that's most important to them anymore, it's being healthy.

"However, there still remains a great deal of pressure on women to conform to an unrealistic ideal and our survey showed that a massive85% of women are at least occasionally unhappy with their weight. By helping women to improve their self confidence and giving them the freedom to set the target weight that they feel most comfortable with,as we do at Slimming World, we can help thousands of women to discover their own perfect body shape - just like Rebecca Wheatley has."

Deejay Spice says to "bring it on" with a clash between herself and Lisa Hyper, this comes after Nuffy says he will train Lisa Hyper to lyrically 'kill' Spice onstage.

The Lisa Hyper and Spice feud has gained speed with emcee and deejay Nuffy caught in the centre. Popular talk show 'Ragashanti Live' got a surprise yesterday morning when Spice called in to discuss the topic of the day, 'Ungrateful Friends'. Spice described Nuffy as an ungrateful friend, and later Nuffy called in and heated words were exchanged between the two.

When THE STAR contacted the two, they say the animosity stemmed from Sting where Spice says she was sabotaged, because of Nuffy she did not get to perform. Nuffy, however, says differently, as he claims he was ordered to call up General B instead. When contacted, one of Sting's promoters Heavy D, says as far as he knows, Spice was on stage and ready to perform and he is unclear as to what occurred.

Nuffy now has come out calling Spice a coward saying, "True mi a bring Lisa Hype why Spice seh mi neva call her onstage. But mi hear sey she wasn't ready, and mi know she's a coward. She nuh waan come on a mawning where she might nuh get her usual forwards."

personal

Now the spat has got personal, as Spice says Nuffy is feeding Lisa Hyper personal information about her for her songs. After Sting, Lisa Hyper released Sting Aftermath in which she insulted Spice among other deejays, which Spice followed up with Lisa Swiper. Lisa Hyper later released two Spice disses with The Truth and Death Sentance. According to Nuffy, Spice is taking the whole situation too personal and has crossed the line.

Nuffy says he plans to train Lisa Hyper to take on Spice onstage. "Yuh see Lisa Hype she have a brave element and she's a great writer, she might not can deliver onstage but mi will train her to deliver. Me can't trace Spice, afta me a nuh woman, me'll train Lisa fi kill her. Spice tink she is untouchable but me know her weak spots. Lisa Hype is di biggest competition she will have in her life and is her worse nightmare," Nuffy said.

Spice, however, says she is up to any challenge saying when she started out as a deejay, she didn't have to sabotage anyone's career to make a name for herself in the business. The deejay also says she will not be responding to Hyper's songs as her one song is "badda dan" Hyper's three songs.

"Me and Nuffy will never be friends again, we know each other for 10 years and I don't know where dis is coming from. How him fi sey me a coward? Afta me and nobody did inna nutten fi clash? So why me woulda coward?" Spice questioned.

Adding, "Lady Saw a di baddest, di queen and me a di princess. She (Hyper) nuh bad like mi toe nail. Mi will clash her for free. Mek she stan up beside of Spice and prove herself."

Dancehall artiste, Spice has come out with all lyrical guns blazing at both the former Portmore Empire artiste, Lisa Hype and MC Nuffy following this week's Sting concert, Jamworld, Portmore.

Image
Lisa Hype who released a song entitled, Sting Aftermath, immediately following Sting, hurled insults at several female dancehall artistes, predominantly Spice. Spice says:

"Lisa Hype, I mean Lisa Swipe is in no position to utter the words she did from her mouth, but I honestly feel very sorry for her. She's going through a shameful time in her life right now and is obviously looking for a dark hole to stick her head in. Lisa Swipe is calling names to keep her name out there; but my name? She ah play wid fire. She know say she nuh bad like mi likkle fingah. Di time she tek ah pick pon di female artiste dem, she need fi go clean off di discharge offah har stomach. She ah gwaan like ah me tek har pictuh an sen' it out. And it's such a pity. Outta every female artiste name whe she call, she ah di crawniest one. She feavah Geico lizard. I've been in the business for 10 years and I've never stooped so low, just to get highlighted. But Lisa doesn't know when to stop stooping and get up off her knees. It's tragic. Let me not bother to go there because she is not in my world. Lisa, as a woman-to-woman, I have never been as humiliated as you are in my life, so I have no idea what you are going through. I can only imagine. So I wish you a speedy recovery," said Spice.

In addition, Spice also spoke of her inability to perform at Sting. "Nuffy sabotaged my thing. After Pamputae performed, he knew it should have been me, but he called up General B instead. When did he expect me to perform after that? During the clash with him and KipRich. It was unprofessional and it was done purposely because before that he was following the lineup and list. I just want to apologise to my fans for not performing. I didn't get the chance to and I had a real end of year performance in store."

When contacted, Lisa Hyper just laughed:

"Spice can stay de gwaan talk, tell her say mi have her file."

Beenie Man did not write 'Everyone Falls In Love' or any such song for Tanto Metro and Devonte

tanto_metro_devonte_beenie_man_everyone_falls_inlove.jpgFollowing Beenie Man's interview with Sarah C of Vibes 93.8 FM a story that was also posted on OutAroad.com about a month ago, in which Beenie Man stated that he part produced and wrote Tanto Metro Devontes mega hit single Everyone Falls In Love. Sarah C was recently contacted by Dimmie Joe Muzic, management for Tanto Metro & Devonte, who whole-heartedly refute Beenie Man's claim that he wrote and partly produced the song. Dimmie Joe Muzic has issued the following statement:

"To whom it may concern,

We would like to address the issue of wrongful information that was posted on your website in the form of an interview between Moses Davis also known as Beenie Man and Sarah C of Vibes 93.8 FM on August 13, 2008 08:55 AM. In the interview Beenie Man states that he was responsible for writing and partly producing Everyone Falls In Love by Tanto Metro and Devonte and even implies that he is the one responsible for the Duo success in past years.

These remarks can be seen as a blatant disregard of respect and professionalism and since they were not corrected I believe that it is our responsibility to clear the air so to speak and let it be know that Moses Davis A.K.A Beenie Man did not write this or any such song for Tanto Metro and Devonte nor has he ever been a part of the production on any project that the duo has worked on. The song Everyone Falls in Love Sometimes was written by Devonte. Yes it is true that the two acts were at the same production company for many years and share many connections and aspects of the music business however their individual careers and creative aspects have never been intertwined in such a fashion. We feel that it is our responsibility to put an end to this untrue rumor, thus it would be our pleasure to do an interview via phone if necessary. It would also please us if you could organize a retraction or correction of the statement on your website.

We appreciate your cooperation and included in this email is our contact information for future reference.

Thank You and Much Respect.

he only person officially recognised as having survived both atomic bombings in Japan at the end of World War II has died from stomach cancer, aged 93.

Tsutomu Yamaguchi was in Hiroshima on a business trip on 6 August 1945 when a US plane dropped the first atomic bomb.

He suffered serious burns and spent a night there before returning to his home city of Nagasaki just before it was bombed on 9 August.

He said he hoped his experience held a lesson of peace for future generations.

It was already recorded that Mr Yamaguchi had survived the Nagasaki bomb, but in March last year officials recognised he had been in Hiroshima as well.

'Precious storyteller'

A handful or Japanese people are known to have lived through both attacks, but Mr Yamaguchi is the only one formally recognised by the Japanese government to have done so.

Certification as a hibakusha or radiation survivor qualifies Japanese citizens for government compensation, including medical check-ups, and funeral costs.

On learning of his official recognition last year, Mr Yamaguchi said: "My double radiation exposure is now an official government record.

"It can tell the younger generation the horrifying history of the atomic bombings even after I die."

In his later years, Mr Yamaguchi gave talks about his experiences as an atomic bomb survivor and emphasised his hope nuclear weapons would be abolished.

About 140,000 people were killed in Hiroshima and 70,000 in Nagasaki.

Survivors fell sick with radiation-related illnesses, including cancers, for years after the bombings.

The Mainichi newspaper reported that last month Mr Yamaguchi was visited in hospital by James Cameron, the director of Titanic and Avatar, who is apparently considering making a film about the bombings.

Commenting on Mr Yamaguchi's death, the mayor of Nagasaki said on the city's website that "a precious storyteller has been lost".

long him live

Since Usain Bolt burst onto the worldwide scene in the spring of 2008, no sprinter has been able to touch him. Now, the self-proclaimed "fastest man in the NFL" is going to try.

ESPN reports that NFL rushing champChris Johnson is in talks with the three-time gold medalist to run a charity race that will determine the world's fastest human. The camps are still discussing the distance of the race. Johnson wants a shorter sprint, which would theoretically favor him, and Bolt would prefer to keep things closer to 100 meters.

Short or long, it doesn't matter. Let me write this slowly so there's no confusion: Johnson. Doesn't. Have. A. Chance.

I don't want to hear about his fast 40 times at the combine or how Bolt is a notoriously slow starter or how if you sync up Bolt's blazing 100 from the Beijing Olympics, it looks like Johnson could hang with him for the first half of the race. Those facts are minor distractions obscuring the most important point of all: Usain Bolt is the fastest human being who has ever walked the Earth. Running a 4.24 at the combines and having the ability to outrun a safety for the Houston Texans doesn't mean Johnson can compete with that.

If they're running in pads or on turf maybe Johnson could have a shot. Not on a track though. Sprinting is a discipline. There are nuances to running a race. It's not just outrunning the guy taking an angle.

The reason Usain Bolt is a slow starter is because it fits in best with his racing style. He builds to peak speed in the 100. That Johnson's sprint matches up with the beginning parts of Bolt's race makes as little difference as the Broncos leading the AFC West on Halloween. All that matters is how you finish. And in a race of 10 meters or 1,000, it would be stunning if Bolt didn't finish ahead of Johnson.

There was some chatter during the last Olympics that an NFL team could give Usain Bolt a workout based solely on his speed. But people came to their senses and realized that speed doesn't necessarily make a football player. The same logic applies here. Just because Chris Johnson is fast doesn't mean he can hang with a world-class sprinter.

I'd certainly watch a Bolt-Johnson race. And I certainly won't be surprised when Usain Bolt crosses the finish line first, as usual.
