A British woman who reported being raped has been arrested by Dubai police for violating Islamic law by having sex out of wedlock, and now faces a possible 6 year prison sentence.
Both the alleged rapist and the victims boyfriend have been charged with having sex with her outside of marriage as well.
The 23-year-old woman, a UK citizen of Pakistani descent and herself a Muslim, was visiting Dubai together with her 44-year-old fiancée, whom she is said to be due to marry.
The woman reported becoming drunk at a hotel bar, and subsequently being raped by a waiter who followed her into the toilets at the same establishment.
She and her partner resolved to report the attack, but police were apparently more concerned with her drinking and sexual relations with her future husband than the alleged crime, charging both her and her paramour with illegal drinking and having sex outside of marriage.
They each face a possible maximum sentence of six years.
The man accused of raping her, who claims she consented, faces charges as well, but for having sex out of marriage rather than for rape.
Police are said to have insisted on *lo** tests to prove she was drinking, but refused to medically examine her for evidence until the British embassy became involved.
Her cell-mate is quoted as saying police were less than sympathetic:
Shes a British girl but a Muslim, so I think they were tougher on her because of that.
She was trying to report the rape but soon realised the policemen were more interested in how often she has sex with her boyfriend.
Superficially modern Dubai upholds relatively mild standards of Sharia law, usually applied leniently to its many international visitors, though in other respects it possesses the same medieval social attitudes as seen in the rest of the Arab world.
"After nearly 20 years at the top of the Jamaican music industry I
have been involved in many battles - sometimes with fellow artists,
sometimes with outside forces and sometimes with the state and its
politicians. I've learnt to choose my battles wisely and the grounds
upon which to fight them.
I've also learnt when to admit I didnt choose my ground wisely and
Saturday night's Shaggy & Friends' show was one of those occasions.
With so many politicians and members of the upper echelons of
corporate Jamaica present, an audience I rarely get the ears of, I
got caught up in the moment while expressing myself. I now realise it
was inappropriate and extend my apologies to Shaggy, his sponsors,
benefactors and all in attendance who were offended by my performance.
Alliance made a pledge to donate $250,000 to the cause and we will
follow through on that promise and continue to support Shaggy and
answer his call whenever he reaches out."

Hinds, speaking at a press conference at the Police Officers' Club in St Andrew, said the astounding figure represents a 33 per cent increase from the 39,000 knives, ice-picks and machetes removed from the streets in 2008.
"This increase is a reflection of the work done mainly by the JCF's school resource officers and police in the geographic divisions," he said.
He could not say, however, the number of children arrested and charged for the offence.
Hinds, in the meantime, said that an increase in police patrols last year proved successful, as several illegal firearms were recovered and wanted persons arrested during the period.
He said the police conducted 256,840 mobile patrols; 49,626 foot patrols; 37,521 motorcycle patrols; and 126,253 spot checks and roadblocks last year.
The efforts, he said, resulted in 32,923 persons -- including 993 who were wanted by the police -- being arrested and charged, the recovery of 671 firearms and 8,430 rounds of ammunition, as well as the recovery of 463 stolen vehicles.
"This came primarily as a result of the intake of 140 new motor cars and pick-ups in the fourth quarter of 2009 and the reorganisation of the Motorised Patrol Division (MPD) and the Traffic Division," he explained.
"Approximately 50 new personnel were added to complement the MPD. As a result, the MPD was able to increase its number approximately from ten patrols per shift to 35 patrols per shift," he added. "This has helped to improve the JCF motorised coverage especially in the Corporate Area."
Hinds said that while the overall statistics show improvement from 2008, several variations will have to be made to some strategies to enhance their effectiveness this year.

Along with her new album, Beyonce has presented her fans to a new alter-ego named Sasha Fierce. The singer affirms that this new persona is the fun, more sexual and more aggressive side of her. This is however the "general public" version of the story. The esoteric meaning revealed by the symbols surrounding this new persona is much deeper: Sasha Fierce is a symbolic representation of an artist taken over by evil to obtain success.
"I have someone else that takes over when it's time for me to work and when I'm on stage, this alter ego that I've created that kind of protects me and who I really am".
-Beyonce
The theme of the album "I am Sasha Fierce" revolves around the duality between the godly Beyonce and the evil Sasha Fierce. This spiritual duality is fought in the songs, the pictures and the videos. Notice on the above images the Christian cross of the good and pure Beyonce versus Sasha Fierce who is mimicking devil horns with her hands. Songs like "Ave Maria" and "Halo" on her album contain obvious spiritual connotations and can be interpreted as either religious songs or odes to her satanic possessor. The persona of Sasha Fierce - who is presented as a separate entity- always wears heavy makeup on her eyes, if not sunglasses which represent her deceptive nature.
Before we get into an in depth analysis, let's look at the main picture displayed at beyonce.com, which sums ups perfectly the purpose of this article.
Sasha Fierce is wearing a metal plate featuring prominently the face of Baphomet, who is also featured on the sigil of the Church of Satan:
Baphomet's head is the only part of the picture that is in color, which shows the importance of this symbol. Another head of Baphomet sits right on top of the first making things even more significant. Sasha's "dress" is adorned with stylish rear-view mirrors and motorcycle handles, which makes Sasha Fierce the vehicle of Baphomet. This exact outfit was used for a George Michael videosomeone, somewhere thought it would be a perfect fit for Sasha Fierce. In her interviews, Beyonce describes her performances as Sasha Fierce like an experience coming right out of The Exorcist.
"When I'm onstage I'm aggressive and strong and not afraid of my sexuality. The tone of my voice gets different, and I'm fearless. I'm just a different person."
Another way to put this is that she has allowed herself to become possessed....
Sasha Fierce was born when I did "Crazy in Love". People, when they meet me, expect that all the time, but that person is strictly for the stage.
Beyonce, People Magazine, November 18th, 2008
Why did Beyonce say that? How can a character be born during a song like "Crazy in Love", which doesnt have anything to do with Sasha Fierce? The answer lies in the video.
The video tells the story of the birth of Sasha Fierce by depicting the steps towards Beyonces transformation. Through symbolic scenes, we first see Beyonce walking towards a speeding car (wih Jay-z in the backseat). The driver is the entity that already took over Jay-Z. Beyonce loosens up her hair to prepare herself and gets on a stage to begin initiation, symbolized by sexual dance moves. She then reaps the rewards of the selling of her soul with fame and fortune. Next, she is emulated by young girls who copy her dancing style. In the final scene, the good Beyonce gets literally blown up while sitting in the backseat of a car by Jay-Z - who calls himself "Young" in the song. As you know, Jay-Z isnt young, but, in this song, he is considered Young after his recent rebirth on the dark side. After the explosion, Sasha Fierce magically appears next to Jay-Z, looking sexy yet devilish. In his verse, Jay-Z refers to Beyonce as "Young B" because she was just reborn.
The video of "Diva" uses the exact same allegory of the car exploding.
Video of "Diva"
"Diva" starts with a shot of dummies in the trunk of a car who represent the "dummies" that idolized and imitated Sasha Fierce. Sasha Fierce is walking away, wearing glasses who are literally shades hiding her eyes, representing the fact that we are not dealing with Beyonce but a deceiver. After going into a warehouse to dance frenetically, act bitchy and sing about vain subjects like materialism, she comes out and lights the car on fire. The same way Jay-Z blew up the car in "Crazy in Love" (which killed the old Beyonce and gave birth to Sasha Fierce), she blows up the car filled with the mindless dummies who were seduced by her deceitful ways.
Beyonces performance at the 2007 BET Awards carried heavy symbolism. Dressed in a robot suit, she wakes up after being electrically charged . Heres the performance (you just need to watch the first couple of minutes).
This performance is inspired by a scene of the 1927 movie "Metropolis" where a female robot becomes alive.
The recreation of this scene from Metropolis is quite significant. The movie depicts a society divided between two rigid social classes, the "thinkers" and the "workers", who cant communicate with each other. Maria, a young female worker who has some influence among her exploited colleagues gets kidnapped by the ruling class. She is taken to the laboratory of a mad scientist who created a robot that could take her physical likeness. The scene above depicts the transformation of the robot into Maria, who will then be controlled by the scientist to incite revolt among the workers. The inverted pentagram behind the robot symbolizes the initiation of Maria into the evil side. She is designed to bring out the worst in men, causing violence, lust, passion and corruption among them. The robot is a devilish and sexually provocative version of Maria and ends up performing in a decadent nightclub of the metropolis. Her mesmerizing dance caused such excitement that it caused a widespread fight among the men present.
Is this why we chose to portray Beyonce as Maria from Metropolis? To use her physical likeness to propagate evil messages to the "working class"?
Im pretty sure Ill get messages from confused people, wondering why I "see evil" everywhere or something. Those people do not understand a couple of fundamental truths, who arent based on wild beliefs but on facts: Record companies like Columbia Records own the image of pop stars like Beyonce or Rihanna. These conglomerates are owned by a handful of powerful people who, more often than not, are initiated into occult secret societies. They believe in the powers of the mind, channeling spirits, Black and White Magick, demon possession, sacred rituals and entities populating the ethereal spheres. In other words, if you dont believe in the spiritual realm, THEY DO. So the analysis here makes perfect sense to them and they know that the average Joe doesnt think in those termsmostly because he was educated since childhood to be blind to those things.
As in anything in life, esoteric teachings range from the sublimely good to the infernal evil. They can elevate your consciousness to a godly level or they make you a slave of malignant spirits. That being said, there appears to be a conscious effort to subject the population to negative imagery through the different outlets of mass media. Plato, the Greek philosopher believed that music had such far reaching effects on the hearts of men that popular songs should be carefully chosen:
Music which ennobled the mind was of a far higher kind than that which merely appealed
to the senses, and he strongly insisted that it was the paramount duty of the Legislature to suppress all music of an effeminate and
lascivious character, and to encourage only that which was pure and dignified
-Manly P. Hall, Secret Teachings of All Ages
If Plato, one of the brightest minds of the Western world believed that music played a vital part in the creation of a perfect nation, can you imagine the effects of negative messages on our modern society? Even if the general population only gets the first level of interpretation of songs or videos, it is believed that the hidden meanings and symbols still affect the collective subconscious. The result is people leading vain existences, trying to fill the gaping void of their lives by continually satisfying their lowest impulses. In other words, lost souls that can be easily controlled and manipulated.
Gorge wrecked Residents say damage the worst they've seen |
The Bog Walk Gorge in St Catherine, which was closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic on Friday after rains from Tropical Storm Gustav caused the Rio Cobre to rise well over 11 feet, might be inaccessible for another month based on an initial assessment of the damage to the roadway and the Flat Bridge the Observer has learnt.
Yesterday, an almost two-mile trek through the gorge from Bog Walk showed that sections of the road stretching to the Flat Bridge had been eaten away by water from the river, which runs the length of the gorge, to reveal huge water mains underneath. Parts of the bridge itself were also eaten away by the flood waters.
These two residents of Bog Walk are forced to carry their bicycles along this stretch of the Bog Walk gorge which collapsed after the Rio Cobre broke its banks as a result of rains caused by Tropical Storm Gustav between last Thursday and Friday. (Photo: Garfield Robinson) |
Tropical Storm Gustav, which tunnelled a path of destruction across the island from Thursday night into Friday, had literally walked the length and breadth of the gorge - the main link between Jamaica's capital Kingston and the north coast. And, from the looks of the crumbled road the storm could easily be described as a skilled excavator.
Chunks of asphalt lay broken like ply where the strong currents had overridden several sections of the retaining wall, eating their way across the road to leave it as rocky terrain and as treacherous as the mountainside opposite. Trees lining the river's left embankment and the mountainside to the right of the road itself showed the heights to which the waters had risen.
Yesterday, several tractors and trucks owned by Baccus Engineering were being used to tackle the mammoth task.
"It's the worst I've ever seen it since I've been here so far," a National Works Agency (NWA) employee, who asked not to be named, told the Observer.

A supervisor for Baccus Engineering, who gave his name as Morris, said work had begun since Saturday.
Douglas Moodie, the NWA parish manager for St Catherine, said from the extent of the damage the agency would probably need more equipment.
"We will have to call for more equipment. We will definitely bring in some more tomorrow because the more equipment we have it's the faster we will get through. Currently, we have three front-end loaders and some trucks working with," he said.
"First we have to remove the debris and fill out some of these craters. I have been in charge of St Catherine for eight years and we have been through many flood rains, and this is the worst we have seen," Moodie told the Observer.
He said it "will take probably about three weeks to a month to do what we have to".
"We might be able to work some nights, but for the time being we will work during the days," he said, adding that it was clear that the damage amounted to millions of dollars.
Yesterday, NWA communications manager, Stephen Shaw, said the agency was "still trying to put the final figure together".
He said while the agency was aware of the damage to the road, it had not yet carried out an assessment - an activity he said will be undertaken today.
Yesterday, residents took the time to do their own assessments. Some at times had to do a balancing act on the water mains in the road's belly for lack of other surfaces on which to walk.
"Di place dig out wicked round dere. I never see it like this yet, not even the June flood (1986) nevah do this," Hopeton Carnegie, a resident of Bog Walk, told the Observer.
Carnegie, who said he was a bus driver who transported children from Linstead to Kingston and back daily, fretted that the condition of the road would leave him no choice but to take the alternate route.
"It a go slow mi up a lot because mi have to go travel all the way roun' Barry (also an alternate route) so that means I going to have to leave by 3:00 am instead. Mi a go burn more gas, so it a go affect mi financially," he said.
"Onnuh have nuff work fi do," one youngster, who was carrying his bicycle rather than riding it, advised the workmen.
"In all my 60 years I never see nothing like this," one elderly gentleman called out as he walked by gingerly.
Former transport and works minister, Robert Pickersgill, also visited the gorge. Pickersgill told the Observer that he had been visiting his North Western St Catherine constituency and decided to stop by.
"I hear this is the worst it has ever been," said Pickersgill, who did not venture far onto the roadway.
The flood-prone gorge has been closed several times over the years. More recently it was closed in October last year and January 2006 because of flood damage.
The first road through the gorge is said to have been cut in 1770. The first bridge, connecting both sides of the gorge, was made of wood but was replaced by the Flat Bridge, which is made from cut stone and mortar. A marker there shows where the water rose to 25 feet above the bridge in 1933.

With resurgent Republicans growing increasingly confident that President Barack Obama may yet be a political mortal in 2012, a new name is emerging as a potential presidential contender: South Dakota Sen. John Thune.
For those in the GOP who arent giddy about a second Mitt Romney run and arent sold on the viability of Tim Pawlenty, Thune represents a mainstream conservative alternative.
Tall, handsome, not yet 50 and with the sort of sunny demeanor that winning national Republicans usually possess, the former high school hoops star looks the part.
Buju donates to Haiti - Jailed artiste sends clothes and cash to earthquake victims | |||
Krista Henry, Staff Reporter
Incarcerated deejay Buju Banton reached out to the Haiti cause yesterday by donating US$1,000 ($89,000)as well as clothes and shoes to Haitian artiste Wyclef Jean's Yele Organization. Although experiencing problems of his own as he is currently in jail in the United States facing drug charges, the deejay opened up his own closet, clothes and shoes to assist persons devastated by the earthquake. On Tuesday, Haiti was struck by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake followed by countless strong aftershocks leaving an immense loss of life and devastation. The earthquake was the largest the island has suffered in more than 200 years. Yesterday, news began circulating on social networking website, Twitter.com, of Buju's deed. However, when THE WEEKEND STAR spoke to a friend of Buju's they confirmed that clothes and shoes as well as a pledge of US$1,000 ($89,000) was made to the Yele Haiti Organization. The source said: "I talked to him about the situation and he said he wanted to help." They added, "he was very disturbed, saddened and touched by the situation and really wanted to help." In the wake of the earthquake, Haitian superstar Wyclef Jean (former member of the popular trio, The Fugees), went on a drive to assist his country through his Yele Foundation. According to a report made on his Twitter page, the singer went to Haiti on Wednesday morning. He said: "I am on my way to the DR (Dominican Republic) to get to Haiti. Please urge your councilmen, governors etc: we need a state of emergency for Haiti." internet donation Jean has organised a donation page on his Yele Haiti Foundation website. Jean set up the foundation in 2005 to provide scholarships to children in Haiti after the devastation by hurricane Jeanne. On his website, Jean said persons can make a donation by texting 'Yele' to 501-501, which will automatically donate US$5 ($445) to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund. According to www.rapradar.com yesterday, Yele Haiti organisation has received over 200,000 text donations and has raised US$1 million for the victims of Tuesday's earthquake. Buju and Wyclef have done several songs together including Party By The Sea and Bed Time Story. During an appearance in court last week, Banton was denied bail. He pleaded not guilty to the charge. If convicted, Buju faces 20 years' imprisonment. |
A body lies amid rubble in Port-au-Prince.
The United States, France, Canada and governments across Latin America were gearing up Wednesday to help Haiti, after a massive 7.0 earthquake leveled buildings and caused an unknown number of casualties. US President Barack Obama said his government stood "ready to assist the people of Haiti," as the State Department, USAID and United States Southern Command mobilized, the White House said. In Miami, the US Coast Guard said it had "mobilized cutters and aircraft to positions in close proximity to Haiti to render humanitarian assistance as needed." USAID said it was dispatching a Disaster Assistance Response Team and along with a search-and-rescue team of at least 72 personnel and six rescue dogs. "This is a tragic situation and we will work alongside the Haitian government to provide immediate assistance in the rescue efforts," said USAID administrator Ranjiv Shah. Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said he was "very concerned" with the situation in Haiti, including the fate of some 1,200 Brazilian members of the 7,000-strong UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti, known as MINUSTAH, which Brazil leads. A MINUSTAH employee in Haiti told AFP that the force's headquarters had been largely destroyed in the quake. In Paris, Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said France "expresses its complete solidarity" with Haiti, adding that his ministry's crisis center had begun working "to mobilize and dispatch without delay urgent aid to Port-au-Prince." Canada, which hosts an 80,000-strong Haitian community, said it was "deeply concerned" with events unfolding in Haiti. Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon said Canadian officials "are making contact with trusted humanitarian partners with a presence in the region to identify humanitarian needs resulting from this earthquake." Australia also offered to respond to "any requests for humanitarian assistance" and said it was seeking "as a matter of urgency" to make contact with two nationals known to still be in Haiti. In Bogota, the president's office said Colombia was "under alert and ready to respond to the Haitian authorities' call for help," adding that the defense ministry and emergency management services were coordinating upcoming assistance efforts. Venezuela said it would send a 50-member "humanitarian assistance team" to Haiti in the next few hours. Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro said the team would leave for Port-au-Prince early Wednesday bearing food and medical supplies for stricken Haitians. In Panama, the country's foreign minister Juan Carlos Varela pledged that his government would provide assistance to the United Nations's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, which has a base in the country. Varela pledged to provide "all the infrastructure required for the logistical coordination of cooperation that should be sent to this brother country." Peru said its 205 peacekeeping troops in MINUSTAH would help in rescue efforts in Haiti, adding that none of the soldiers was injured in the quake. "The military personnel has nothing to report and will lend support to the quake victims to the best of their abilities," Peru's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. In the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, President Leonel Fernández called on the international community to help Haiti overcome a "real tragedy." He said his government was at the ready to send assistance. A government spokesman said a Dominican Air Force plane was ready to pick up quake victims and that it was sending a team of sniffer dogs to search for victims in the rubble. |
A man who hit another man with a building block told the court he did it because the man was claiming to be the father of his daughter.
The accused appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday to answer to a charge of assault occasioning bodily harm.
The accused pleaded guilty and told the court that on the day in question, he went to visit his daughter and to give her a Christmas present. He said the complainant grabbed the gift from the child and threw it away and then told him that the child was his and he should leave.
The accused said he lost his temper and used the block to hit the complainant, who fell to the ground.
The accused also told the court that he was trying to get a paternity test done but said the complainant wanted him to pay for it. He, however, revealed that he had set a date with the Family Court for it to be done and for the matter to be resolved soon.
He was fined $5,000 or six months.LONDON Call it pork in a petri dish a technique to turn pig stem cells into strips of meat that scientists say could one day offer a green alternative to raising livestock, help alleviate world hunger, and save some pigs their bacon.
Dutch scientists have been growing pork in the laboratory since 2006, and while they admit they haven't gotten the texture quite right or even tasted the engineered meat, they say the technology promises to have widespread implications for our food supply.

'Aid' is on the way
The United States Geological Survey's website shows there have been approximately 80 earthquakes, measuring anywhere from 2.4 to 7.0, in the Caribbean within the past week.
An online in-depth map outlines the dates, times and magnitudes of the earthquakes taking place mainly in the Hispaniola and Puerto Rico regions. Along with the major earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday, there was a smaller one with a magnitude of 2.5 in the Mona Passage alongside Puerto Rico.
Young science
According to Lyndon Brown, research fellow at the University of West Indies Earth-quake Unit, "Earth-quakes are always happening. There are cycles in terms of when the big events will be happening. The strength is building up and it has to be released.
"It is a young science when it comes to detecting earthquakes."
The unit did not register any other earthquakes in the region aside from what took place in Haiti.
Brown said the instruments at the Earthquake Unit are designed to detect local earthquakes. However, if the earthquakes measure 6 or 7, then the instruments will detect these events as far away as the Pacific.
Unrelated activity
"We should be able to pick up Puerto Rico," he said.
Puerto Rico and Haiti's fault systems are different, according to Brown, while Puerto Rico's activity may not be related to Haiti's.
"In terms of the motions that are taking place, it doesn't show that one is contributing to the other."
However, not all earthquakes are felt in Jamaica. If they are, then the unit notifies the ODPEM immediately.
People carry an injured person after an earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Tuesday. The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 and was centred about 10 miles (15 kilometres) west of Port-au-Prince.
Edeline B. Clermont weeps in the 'Little Haiti' area of Miami on Tuesday, as she talks to her sister in Boston after both were unable to contact relatives in Haiti upon hearing news about the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that shook the island.
Elizabeth Kreitler, with the Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue team deployed by USAID, looks down at Racker, a FEMA-certified live human search dog, before boarding a plane for their rescue mission to Haiti, in Sterling, Virginia, yesterday.
