Winnie Mandela accuses Nelson of 'betraying' the blacks of South Africa

Nelson Mandela has been accused by his former wife of betraying South Africa's black population.

In a savage attack, Winnie Mandela said he had done nothing for the poor and should not have accepted the Nobel peace prize with the man who jailed him, FW de Klerk.

The 73-year-old said her ex-husband had become a 'corporate foundation' who was 'wheeled out' only to raise money for the ANC party he once led.

She said Archbishop Desmond Tutu was a cretin and claimed the sacrifices of Steve Biko and others in the fight against apartheid were being overlooked.

The comments were made in an interview yesterday with Nadira Naipaul, the wife of novelist V S Naipaul.

Mrs Mandela became notorious in 1991 when she was jailed for six years for the kidnap of Stompie Moeketsi - a sentence later cut to a fine.

Stompie, 14, had been murdered three years earlier by members of Mrs Mandela's bodyguard, the Mandela United Football Club.

She also caused outrage by endorsing the punishment of apartheid collaborators with ' necklacing' - putting burning tyres around their necks.

Yesterday she said: 'This name Mandela is an albatross around the necks of my family.

'You all must realise that Mandela was not the only man who suffered. There were many others, hundreds who languished in prison and died.

'Mandela did go to prison and he went in there as a young revolutionary but look what came out.

'Mandela let us down. He agreed to a bad deal for the blacks. Economically we are still on the outside. The economy is very much "white".

'I cannot forgive him for going to receive the Nobel with his jailer de Klerk. Hand in hand they went. Do you think de Klerk released him from the goodness of his heart?

'He had to. The times dictated it, the world had changed.'

The Mandelas, who divorced in 1996, were married for 38 years - although together for only five.

Mrs Mandela criticised her country's Truth and Reconciliation Committee - which she appeared before in 1997 and which implicated her in gross violations of human rights.

She said: 'What good does the truth do? How does it help to anyone to know where and how their loved ones are killed or buried?

'That Bishop Tutu who turned it all into a religious circus came here. He had a cheek to tell me to appear.

'I told him that he and his other like-minded cretins were only sitting there because of our struggle and me. Look what they make him do. The great Mandela. He has no control or say any more.

'They put that huge statue of him right in the middle of the most affluent white area of Johannesburg. Not here [in Soweto] where we spilled our *lo**.

'Mandela is now like a corporate foundation. He is wheeled out globally to collect the money.'

She said her daughters, Zenani, 51, and Zindzi, 50, had to struggle through red tape to speak to their 91-year-old father, who led South Africa from 1994 to 1999.

Mavado's albums with VP Records

Singjay Mavado and reggae label VP Records have officially parted ways after a mutual decision was made to end agreements between the two.

Mavado's manager, Julian Jones-Griffith, yesterday told THE STAR the artiste's contract with VP Records was terminated on March 1. When contacted, Cristy Barber, vice-president of marketing and promotions for VP Records, confirmed that VP would no longer be working with the singjay but offered no further comment.

Jones-Griffith explained: "The agreement has been terminated so he's not obligated to deliver any more albums. This is the first time an artiste has managed to get out of a deal wid dem ... it's an eye-opener for the business that anyone could get out of a deal with VP."

Mavado signed to VP Records late 2006 for a three-album deal. Thus far, Mavado has provided two of the albums:Gangsta For Life: The Symphony of David Brooks in 2007 and Mr Brooks ... A Better Tomorrow last March.

Jones-Griffith was reluctant to give reasons behind the termination but said Mavado was happy to be out of the contract and looking forward to positive moves for the future.

"We're glad to be free agents and explore other options. VP is the number-one reggae label and they can't keep the number-one reggae artiste on the roster, so you can read into that what you want," he said.

In the meantime, Mavado and his team will be courting all the major record labels overseas for the release of his forthcoming albums. According to Jones-Griffith, while it might not be an easy road, Mavado is well loved overseas by fans and various A&R (Artists and Repertoire) of major companies. If a record deal doesn't pan out the way Mavado wants, Jones-Griffith explained that an independent release of his next album is also an option.

"People can expect his next album depending on what happens. It could be early next year if we get a deal. If not, we can release it by ourselves this year if we want," he said.

In the meantime, Mavado has been busy in the studio with upcoming releases from producers Stephen McGregor and DASECA. He is also looking to shoot a video next month for Come Into My Room, the hit song featuring Stacious. Other collaborations in the works will feature rappers Young Jeezy, Drake and Lil Jon for his new album.

A woman was beaten Tuesday morning for reportedly failing to follow rules she claims were put in place for persons living on the 'Gaza'.

"Mi really need some help so that somebody can do something about this," the woman, Mercedes, said with tears in her eyes as she sat down for the interview.

Mercedes lived at 59B Mannings Hill Road, referred to as Big Yard and 'Gaza' for the past eight years.

"Everything was fine until them start come in here setting rules and regulations," she said, while noting that it began early this year.

Mercedes said the residents in the area are not allowed to fight, have arguments or play Mavado's music. In addition, she said, persons entering the area have to turn off their headlights.

She said she disobeyed one of the rules when she got into a fight with another woman because she wanted to use the bathroom in the tenement yard about 9 a.m. For fighting, she was beaten by two men.

Immediately after, she went to the Constant Spring Police Station, where she gave a short statement but 'blacked out' after. The police took her to the University Hospital of the West Indies where she received several stitches in her head and hand. She also had major bruises on one of her breast, her legs and hand.

The police confirmed the incident, also noting that she was beaten with a baton. They are currently looking for Leberth McDonald, also known as 'Laing', in relation to the incident. However, they could not confirm if it was the same 'Laing', Vybz Kartel refers to in a few of his songs.

After treatment, she went back to the police, made a statement and returned home. Then, the two men returned and kicked down her door but she hid in her kitchen. In hiding, she called the police, who returned to pick her up. Attempts to find the men have been unsuccessful.

"Mi caan stay dere now 'cause mi get di police involved and dem seh mi a informer. Mi mother go down there fi go fi mi son and dem threaten her and run her out of di lane," Mercedes said, while noting that she has been staying with a friend since then.

"Somebody even call mi from private number and a seh mi caan come back down deh so. Mi a go dead 'cause mi a informer," she said.

The interview got very emotional when she made reference to her six-year-old son.

"But mi baby still up there. Mi waan go fi mi baby. Him up there with mi cousin. Dem seh him nah eat, him a fret 'cause him used to see mi everyday," Mercedes told THE WEEKEND STAR, bursting into tears.

"Dem capable of doing anything. So, I don't even know. Dem will do anybody anything. Dem don't think before dem act. People deh deh weh nuh like it but because dem fraid fi dem life dem nuh waan talk. Di only person can talk to dem is Kartel and him need to talk to dem."

THE WEEKEND STAR tried to get in contact with Vybz Kartel for a response but was unsuccessful.

Mercedes said she does not blame Vybz Kartel but believes he urgently needs to speak to the men. She also noted that since the incident in the area last month where the tourists were beaten for playing Mavado's song at Rampin Sundays, Kartel has not been visiting the area as frequently.

In a whirl of limbs and with eyes bulging, the woman is helped to a squat in the ramshackle shed and starts cackling maniacally like a terrified chicken.

In their eyes, she is possessed by a spirit of the dead - one of the 220,000 estimated to have perished in Haiti's January quake perhaps - and is thus, in a way, blessed.

When she picks up a rusty knife and swings clockwise around the room, gulping from a bottle of cherry-flavored alcohol, they do not draw away.

Instead they embrace her, even kiss her. And in that way they are blessed, too.

But for all the fervor and favor being shared in this back-alley corner of Cite Soleil, a Port-au-Prince slum that was badly smashed in the quake, the practitioners of Voodoo are feeling under seige.

Their cult, a form of west African polytheism that came to Haiti with the slave trade, is being blamed by some followers of the rapidly growing Christian denominations - evangelicals, Seventh-Day Adventists, Baptists - as the cause of God's anger in smiting their country.

"They say we're the ones who caused the earthquake. But we know ourselves that we didn't cause the quake, because it was a natural catastrophe," said Willer Jassaint, one of the priests, or houngans, leading the Voodoo ceremony.

Matters came to a head February 23, when a group of Protestant Evangelicals attacked a Cite Soleil Voodoo ceremony with a hail of rocks.

Max Beauvoir, supreme head of Haitian Voodoo, said two days afterwards that a repeat of the violence would lead to "open war," with his followers told to meet aggression with aggression.

So far, that has not happened.

But in the streets and packed churches of Haiti's capital, muted animosity is felt towards the Voodoo worshippers.

Some of its stems from the fact that Voodoo is more assiduously followed by the poorest strata of Haiti's population - a stigmatised majority in the poorest country in the Americas.

Some of it also is explained by the lingering fear generated by the use of Voodoo by Haiti's most notorious dictators, Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier and his son Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier, to repress the populace during their rule from the 1950s to mid 1980s.

Today, Voodoo remains an official state religion, and it is estimated more than half of Haiti's population practises at least elements of it, sometimes with Catholicism.

"I don't like them," said one 26-year-old Haitian women who declared herself a Protestant, as she stepped through a chaotic marketplace.

A vendor nearby said, though, that he could not see how Vodouisants, as they are called, could be held responsible for the nation's disaster.

"It's not Voodoo that caused the earthquake," he said.

In front of one church overflowing during an hours-long Sunday service, several Christian Haitians said they agreed that blaming Voodoo for Haiti's ills was as akin to superstition as Voodoo itself.

Nevertheless, one woman dressed in her best church-going clothes, Vilherne Petitfrere, said the quake had stirred the faithful to greater devotion.

"When you're afraid, you pray to God, that's just nature. You don't go to anyone else except God. That's why the church has been full these past days," she said.

Back in the Voodoo shed, as the chanting and dancing and rum-fuelled flames faded, the houngans somberly laid out their plans for bigger, more public ceremonies in the days to come.

They owe the spirits of the dead that release, they say - and they owe themselves that show of defiance.

"We have to maintain our religion now... Because our religion is our soul, it's part of us," Jassaint said.

These pictures show the terrifying moment that two teenagers found themselves trapped on a precarious cliff ledge with the sea crashing just feet below.

The pair, who had been out searching for fossils when they were cut off by the tide, were in danger of being swept off the sheer cliff face after they became stranded.

The boys, believed to be 15 and 16-years-old, decided to call 999 from a mobile phone after being stuck on the ledge for an hour.

Shortly afterwards, a team of coastguards and a lifeboat crew arrived to rescue the terrified pair.

The teens became stranded by the strong waves after being cut off by the tide while they were out searching for fossils

The lifeboat crew arrived to find the boys stuck 100ft down the cliff at Saltwick Bay, Whitby, North Yorkshire.

After considering the best and safest way to rescue the boys, coastguard Steven Bunt decided to lower himself down from an RAF Sea King helicopter, before securing the two as well as ensuring they were wearing lifejackets. 

The rescue team ruled out attempting to rescue the pair by boat as the swell breaking at the base of the cliff was too dangerous.

After their rescue, the teenagers were taken to nearby Scarborough District Hospital for a check-up.

Colin Massy, a pilot from RAF Boulmer said: 'The boys were cold, wet and a bit  shaken up but not hypothermic. They were very fortunate as the situation was very precarious.'

Pharmacist refuses to give mother, 38, contraceptive pills for period pain 'because of her religion'

A pharmacist refused to serve a mother-of-two with a prescription for the contraceptive pill because it went against her religious beliefs.

Shocked Janine Deeley, 38, initially thought the female pharmacist must be joking, but became angry when she was told to try another chemist or come back the next day when someone else was on duty.

Miss Deeley said she is prescribed the pill by her GP because she suffers from a condition which causes painful periods.

She said she was furious at being 'treated like a child' and having to explain herself like an irresponsible teenager.

She said: 'I couldn't believe the arrogance of the woman. Who is she to refuse to give me properly prescribed legal drugs? I am a responsible adult.

'She had no right to refuse to dispense my prescription except if the drugs weren't in stock or if she thought the dosage was incorrect.'

The branch of Lloyd's pharmacy adjoins the doctor's surgery and Miss Deeley said she had used it for years without a problem. But this time the pharmacist took her to one said and said she could have the painkillers she wanted but not the contraceptive pill.

'I asked "oh why not?" and she said "I don't give them out because of my religion." I honestly thought she was joking and I said "Pardon?"

'She repeated it and I said "You're not giving me the pills because of your religion?" and she replied "Yes." I was absolutely stunned. I was fuming and just stormed out.'

Miss Deeley, of Wybourn, Sheffield, added: 'I had no idea what religion the woman was and I don't remember if she has served me before. The other staff looked very embar****ed but obviously it was the pharmacist's decision.

'There's a lot of things in society you might not like or agree with, but you can't do anything about them.This type of thing shouldn't be happening, it's not right.'

The jobless single mother has daughters Carlie, 18, and Lauren, 14, and she is concerned about the implications of such a refusal policy.

She said: 'My daughter is 18 - she might want to go on the Pill and she has got that right. I'd rather have that than an unwanted pregnancy.'

A spokeswoman for Lloyds pharmacy said an investigation had been launched: 'We are very sorry Ms Deeley was refused supply of her prescribed contraceptive pill at our Duke Street pharmacy.

'We have launched an investigation into the incident and been in contact with her to apologise for any distress and inconvenience caused.'

Yesterday the pharmacist - who has not been named - was not at work. She is a locum who is said to occasionally fill in when the regular pharmacists are on holiday or on a day off.

A spokeswoman from NHS Sheffield, the primary care trust responsible for how well pharmacies and other health bodies across the city perform, said it would investigate the matter if a formal complaint was made.

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) said the pharmacist was acting within her rights.

The spokesman said:'While the Code of Ethics and Standards does not require a pharmacist to provide a service that is contrary to their religious or moral beliefs, any attempt by a pharmacist to impose their beliefs on a member of the public seeking their professional guidance, or a failure to have systems in place to advise of alternative sources for the service required, would be of great concern to the RPSGB and could form the basis of a complaint of professional misconduct.'

LOS ANGELES Mo'Nique became the fifth black woman to win an acting Oscar, 70 years after Hattie McDaniel won the same honor for "Gone With the Wind" the first Academy Award ever given to a black performer.

The 42-year-old standup comedian portrayed an abusive mother in "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire."

"I want to thank Miss Hattie McDaniel for enduring all she had to so that I would not have to," Mo'Nique said in accepting the Oscar.

Mo'Nique, who has insisted on being considered a standup, not an actress, was asked backstage if she still feels that way.

"I am a standup comedian who won an Oscar," she said, laughing. "Oh, baby, that tickled me."

She noted that her outfit evoked McDaniel, who also wore a blue dress and a gardenia in her hair the night she received her award.

A masked gang armed with guns and a machete have stormed a German poker tournament in a luxury hotel - as it was broadcast on live television.

Six men burst into the Grand Hyatt yesterday afternoon and stole around 800,000 euros.

"Several masked, armed individuals entered the hotel and fled with a haul of money," a police spokeswoman said.

Several participants at the tournament in Berlin's Grand Hyatt hotel were slightly injured as they panicked and fled during daring heist. There are no reports of serious injuries.

One newspaper quoted witnesses as saying that the robbers were armed with automatic weapons, machetes and hand grenades.

An unarmed security guard confronted some of the attackers. He told a German newspaper that he was hit with a machete but managed to avoid serious injury by moving his head "so I wasn't hurt too badly - but he caught me around the eye".

The guard then threw a pole and strongbox at the men as they filled bags with cash.

"They pointed the gun at me and I got out of the way. They continued to fill their bags. As they ran off I managed to get one of them in a headlock.

"As another guard came to help me the man with the machete returned so I had to let him go as I was not armed."

Witness Claudia Sommerey told Spiegel Online: "I saw three disguised men with rifles. Security tried to keep them at bay. I heard someone shouting 'down, down, down' so I got under one of the tables."

The jackpot for the tournament stood at euro1 million ($1.36 million), according to the European Poker Tour (EPT) website. The EPT confirmed the heist on a blog, saying there had been "an armed robbery executed by six men." The tournament resumed four hours later.

According to the EPT's website, about 400 participants started into the five days long competition on Wednesday. Most of them, however, had already dropped out of the game by Saturday, among them tennis legend Boris Becker.

An L.A. Superior Court judge threw out Charles Pearson's small claims suit against the "Loveline" doc after both parties failed to show up to court Monday.

Pearson -- who was arrested last week and charged with felony stalking -- filed the lawsuit against Dr. Drew on February 8 ... claiming the doc was a member of the KKK and owed him $2,500 for performing "illegal surgery" on him.

Pearson is currently being held on $400,000 bail.

Dr. Phil McGraw doesn't want to see the deposition in his interior design lawsuit ending up on the Internet -- and he's filed court papers to make sure that never happens.

The good doctor is involved in a he-said/she-said lawsuit with a decorating duo that claims Phil and his wife Robin screwed them over -- and the McGraws countersued, saying they were overcharged for work.

According to court docs filed last week, McGraw wants to make sure his videotaped deposition is sealed because he thinks "the plaintiffs believe that the threat of the release of the discovery to the tabloids will give them leverage in the case."

Both sides are due back in court next month.

The Michael Jackson estate just laid the smack down on a bunch of Michael Jackson wannabes -- all over access to Neverland.

The wannabes are actually in a Michael Jackson tribute band named "Neverland" -- a name the MJ estate feels is a violation of its trademark.

Long story short -- the MJ estate wrote a scary legal letter demanding the band change its name ... and it did ... to Foreverland.

Here's the catch -- "Foreverland" still owns the rights to the domain name neverlandsf.com -- and its willing to give it back to Camp Jacko ... for a cool $30,000.

In short, the Jackson estate told the band to "beat it" -- and gave them until February 2011 to begin forwarding all web traffic to the new foreverlandsf.com ... or else.

The band tells us they're currently going over their options.

Quentin Tarantino -- fresh from his Oscar loss -- is now being sued by a man who claims Q.T. ripped-off his concept to create "Kill Bill."

In a lawsuit filed today, Dannez Hunter claims in 1999 he submitted a treatment to Miramax, about a fictional character named Ren. Short story -- he says eventually Miramax, Harvey Weinstein and Q.T. ripped-off his work, including the "concept/character name Ren." He claims Q.T. pilfered Ren witnessing her mother's sadistic murder, the knife through the mother's abdomen, and on and on.

And there's this. Hunter, who says he was from the inner city, applied for a job at Miramax but "was never given a return phone call, as numerous similar situated less qualified Jewish and White people were bestowed job after job after job."

Hunter continues his Jews-run-Hollywood themed lawsuit by alleging he was denied royalties in the "Kill Bill" franchise compared to similarly situated Whites and Jews.

Hunter wants more than a million bucks. Mazel Tov.

Kelly Cutrone's visit to sex-gadget shop Babeland on her Bravo show "Kell on Earth" -- where she bought sex toys and Proper Attire condoms for her doctor's receptionist -- was supposed to appear only online. But after seeing a preview of the clip, Cutrone called the network and had producers edit it into last night's full-length episode. "It was important to me that we spread the message that shopping for sex toys is OK," the p.r. honcho tells us. "I thought it was perfect. This isn't something we should be ashamed to discuss."

Cops involved in the Ben Roethlisberger investigation went back to Capital City bar in Georgia yesterday and searched the restroom for clues ... sources tell TMZ.

As we already reported, the alleged sexual assault took place in a bathroom in the bar. "The cops were all over that bathroom," one source told TMZ

And Capital City bar -- where the alleged incident occurred -- was closed Monday.

The alleged accuser is under 21. She was legally allowed to be in the bar but not allowed to drink. Law enforcement tells TMZ the alleged victim had been drinking and "alcohol is a factor in the investigation."

Sources say the authorities are trying to find out if the woman was served at any of the local bars.

A Brooklyn jury today convicted an orthodox rabbi of repeatedly sexually abusing a 16-year-old classmate of his son.

The panel of 10 women and two men deliberated less than half a day before finding the rabbi, Baruch Lebovits, 58, guilty of eight counts of sexual abuse.

The jury acquitted him of two counts.

"Justice was served," said the father of the abused boy, whose name is being withheld by The Post.

The teen said the rabbi lured him into his car by offering to let him drive, then unzipped his fly and performed oral sex on him.

Lebovits had no reaction as the jury forewoman read the verdict, but sniffles and gasps were heard from the roughly 30 assembled friends and relatives.

Justice Patricia DiMango ordered the rabbi remanded pending sentence. He faces up to 32 years behind bars.

"I understand that there are a significant number of Jewish holidays coming up, and I am sorry," she said.

The two not-guilty verdicts applied to charges during the summer months of 2004, when testimony showed that the victim was at an upstate camp with limited ability to visit Brooklyn.

"Were extremely disappointed," said lawyer Arthur Aidala. "We were hoping that the jury was going to see things differently...Mr. Lebovits still maintains his innocence."

A third rogue NYPD cop was nabbed in Yonkers yesterday in connection with a million-dollar perfume heist in New Jersey that unraveled when authorities traced rented trucks to police officers who used their real names, sources said yesterday.

Kelvin Jones, a four-year veteran, was grabbed by FBI agents after three days on the lam. The Yonkers resident was assigned to the 46th Precinct in The Bronx.

Two other NYPD cops have been busted in the caper, which took place last month in a Carlstadt warehouse after they and their cohorts hired 16 day laborers to fill rented trucks with $1 million worth of high-end perfumes, authorities said.

The plan fell apart when the officers used their real IDs to rent the trucks, the feds said.

Among those arrested were Officers Richard LeBlanca, 25, and Brian Checo, 24, both of the 34th Precinct in Washington Heights, and their childhood pal, retired cop Orlando Garcia, 35.

Rap royalty Lil Wayne was given a superstar's sendoff to jail this afternoon -- mobbed by hundreds of reporters and cell-phone-waving fans, and serenaded by shouts of "Weezy! We love you!"

"Yo, keep your head up, Weezy!" one fan shouted from a back row in a Manhattan courtroom as the cuffs went on.

With good behavior, the rapper will spend eight months in protective custody on Rikers Island for the .40-caliber Springfield Armory semi-automatic cops took from his pot-smoke-infused tour bus after a concert two years ago at the Beacon Theater.

The Grammy-winning performer -- nicknamed "Weezy" -- has made upward of $50 million a tour, will continue making music in jail, said his lawyer, Stacey Richman.

"He's an unstoppable musician and creator," she said.

But in court, his performance was lacking. Slouching at the defense table in a gray, Spiewak and Sons hooded jacket and baggy black jeans, he said virtually nothing.

Asked by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Charles Solomon if he wanted to speak before sentencing, the rapper shook his head, "No."

"Nothing at all?" repeated the judge. The rapper shook his head no again.

Richman has repeatedly complained that the gun belonged to another uncharged associate of the rapper who was on the bus and was willing to accept responsibility for it.

But prosecutors took a hard line -- insisting that "possession," under the strict legal sense of the word, means having control or "dominion" over the gun, and doesn't necessarily mean outright ownership.

Cops who boarded Lil Wayne's tour bus said they saw him toss the gun into a Louis Vuitton knapsack. The knapsack also contained a prescription bearing Lil Wayne's given name, Dwayne Carter, said cops.

The rapper's sentencing was cancelled on three prior occasions -- once because he needed to complete major dental surgery, and twice more because of a fire and resulting repair delays at the courthouse.
