Deejay Mr. Lexx, who was arrested last October on a rape charge in New York, has been acquitted of all charges, one876entertainment understands.

"The case is over and done with. Mr. Lexx was able to get a good sleep for the first time in months and in the next couple of weeks, he will return to Jamaica to kiss his mother, and spend times with his children and his ex-wife. His record has also been expunged," a grinning Earlton Clarke told one876.

The deejay, whose real name is Christopher Palmer, had been arrested after a woman reported to the police that he sexually molested her. He reportedly has one more hearing to attend before he can return home.

The Express newspaper in Trinidad says that the police in that soca-loving island have attempted to block Jamaican deejay Blak Ryno, -- also known as Ryno Di Stinga from entering the country, but their plan failed.

Ryno performed at a concert there on Saturday, and reports are that the event was well attended and went very well.

Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Gilbert Reyes said he had written a letter to National Security Minister Martin Joseph, requesting that Ryno, whose real name is Romaine Anderson, be debarred from entering the country.

The artiste managed to slip into the country even though the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service had been put on alert to prevent his entry, Reyes said.

Apparently by the time the letter reached the Minister, it was too late because he (Anderson) had already arrived in the country and was given clearance (by Immigration officials) to enter, Reyes is quoted by the newspaper assaying.

Reyes says he is moving to block from entering the island, any regional or international artiste whose music contributes and appears to influence gang-related activity and behaviour.

We are already trying to deal with that (gang-related activities) and we cannot afford any longer for these artistes to come here with their music, which influences and ignites gang behaviour, which leads to serious crimes being committed.

And, while he did not name any of Blak Rynos songs, the Trinidad cop declared that Rynos music has gang lyrical content and we do not want that here.

Anyone who has that type of lyrical content in their music, we are going to write to the government and ask that they be blocked from entering the country, Reyes added.

IT will take approximately US$1 million (J$89m) for the Real Madrid Football School for Social Integration to be up and fully operational, revealed Jesus Silva, the Spanish Ambassador to Jamaica.

The first phase of the school was launched on Monday in Montego Bay, St James, and the official signing of the agreement took place yesterday at the Knutsford Court Hotel in New Kingston.

Real-Madrid-_w370.jpg

"The launching of the project is around US$30,000 and the annual budget will be incremented according to the number of coaches and kids that we will be training."The running cost will be around US$50,000. The wider project, which has different phases and the future infrastructure, will be up to US$1 million," Silva told the Observer following the press launch.

"We have calculated the initial step for the programme with 30 kids, but we want to expand it to 50 kids and it could go up to 200 kids," he added.

The school will be located on lands donated by the Rollins family on the sprawling property of Rose Hall in Montego Bay.

Mark Rollins, whose mother Michelle was instrumental in getting the project off the ground, said his family is proud to be involved.

Said Rollins: "We are honoured to be a part of it. The youths are the future of the country and we want to do everything we can to give them that extra little push."

Rollins pleaded for further assistant from corporate Jamaica, noting that one of these youngsters might "be the next famous footballer or prime minister".

Meanwhile, technical director of the school, former Jamaican goalkeeper Aaron Lawrence, saw his dream turn into reality.

"I must say today is a wonderful day for Jamaica's football. My dream is to see these youth become good ambassadors for Jamaica and their various communities," said Lawrence.

Former Real Madrid star and national Spanish striker Emilio Butragueno, who represents the Real Madrid School for Social Integration, said they want to give something back.

"Real Madrid is going to do their best to make this project a success. Football is the perfect vehicle to use," he pointed out.

PNP says statement raises more questions

THE ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) yesterday conceded that the decision to approach US law firm Manatt, Phelps & Phillips originated within its ranks and revealed that the mystery Government minister who met with State Department officials and representatives of the law firm was junior foreign minister Dr Ronald Robinson.

But according to Karl Samuda, the JLP general secretary who was mandated by the party to probe the controversy, the Government had no hand in any of the arrangements and did not make any payments to the law firm.

Karl-Samuda-84_w370.jpg

"The Government of Jamaica did not enter into any contractual arrangement with Manatt, Phelps & Phillips and therefore no payments were made to the firm by the Government of Jamaica," Samuda said in a statement in reference to queries over the source of the US$49,892.62 Manatt said it was paid for its services.Samuda gave a chronological report of the controversy in which the Government has been embroiled for more than a month and which is linked to the United States' request for the extradition of Tivoli Gardens don Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.

The extradition request for Coke, who the Americans accuse of drug-and arms-trafficking, was submitted to the Jamaican Government in August last year. However, the Bruce Golding-led Government has refused to process the request, arguing that the evidence submitted by the US against Coke was illegally obtained.

Yesterday, in his statement, Samuda said that in September last year, persons within the JLP approached Jamaican attorney Harold Brady "to see whether, through his wide network of international contacts, he could assist in facilitating the opening of discussions between the US authorities and the Government of Jamaica, and thereby seek to resolve what had become a treaty dispute between the US and Jamaica".

Added Samuda: "I am aware that Mr Brady's firm retained the services of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips on or about October 2009, to pursue discussions with relevant officials of the Government. I am advised that all payment arrangements to Manatt, Phelps & Phillips were transacted between the two firms. The Government of Jamaica had nothing to do with any aspect of these arrangements."

He repeated the Government's admission that Solicitor General Douglas Leys met with representatives of Manatt at Brady's invitation, but said that the talks were exploratory and were focused on alternative approaches that have been taken in similar treaty disputes with the US.

"The solicitor general made it clear that the Government of Jamaica saw no need at that stage to engage their services, but would be prepared to consider doing so should the need arise," Samuda said, adding that Leys accepted a suggestion that a representative of Manatt attend the planned meeting with the State and Justice departments as an observer, which he did with the full approval of the State Department.

"The solicitor general, who had had no previous contact with Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, was not then aware that the firm had already been retained by Brady & Company," said Samuda. "He has had no further contact with the firm since that encounter in December."

Samuda also responded to an April 15 Washington Post report that revealed that a Jamaican Government minister attended a meeting with Manatt and State Department representatives.

He fingered Robinson as the minister to whom the Post referred but said it was "a brief social encounter".

But last night, Opposition spokesman Dr Peter Phillips, who brought the Manatt issue to public attention in Parliament on March 16, said Samuda's statement "raises more questions than it provides answers".

He questioned what interest the JLP, as a political party, would have in treaty matters between two governments and said the statement suggested that the JLP was confusing its party political interests and its responsibilities to the people of Jamaica and the public interest.

"I do not understand the basis for the Jamaica Labour Party having an interest in the matter, unless they are saying that, because Mr Coke is a member of the party that they have an interest in it, and why they would move as a party to engage in the lobbying effort, outside of using the established diplomatic channels, which they were obviously also using," said Phillips.

He also questioned whether, given that the senior members of the Cabinet were also senior members of the JLP, the party could have entered into the arrangement with Manatt without the approval of the party leader and prime minister, or the general secretary or chairman of the JLP.

"That certainly doesn't seem to be a credible position," said Phillips.

He also pointed to Samuda's failure to say who paid Manatt and asked: "Are we to believe that Mr Brady paid from his private funds? Did the Jamaica Labour Party pay? Or was it Mr Coke who paid?

"Those issues aren't clarified in any shape or form by what Mr Samuda has said."

Phillips also said that the matter raised questions about the credibility and tenability of the solicitor general, as Samuda did not indicate whether Leys was on a frolic of his own or was given permission to invite the law firm into the meeting two months after Manatt was engaged.

"The whole saga seems to suggest that there was a determined attempt, at the very outset, to confuse the people of Jamaica and to deny them access to the facts," said Phillips.

The country, he said, still expected forthright, truthful answers from the prime minister, "otherwise we can have no confidence in the trustworthiness of the Government".

THE Coconut Industry Board (CIB) is pushing to increase coconut production by 100,000 plants or six million nuts annually, even while local private interests express demand for 10 times that amount over the next two years.

Each plant on average can produce 60 to 100 coconuts per year. A coconut is sold for $27.50, according to information from the Ministry of Agriculture. At 60 coconuts per plant, Jamaica could realise an estimated $165 million per 100,000 plants.

It takes four years for a plant to fully develop and start bearing fruit, so the revenue impact may not be actualised until the fifth year of the programme.

Last year Jamaica produced 94.8 million nuts, generating revenues of over $2.6 billion.

Dr Derrick Deslandes, senior director, Centre of Excellency at the Ministry of Agriculture, told the Business Observer that the investment in coconut water comes at an opportune time because the world demand for coconut water, seen as the new replacement fluid, is set to increase.

He said with PepsiCo and Coca-Cola entering into the market for coconut water, there are many opportunities for expansion.

Moreover, one of the island's largest food processors, GraceKennedy has indicated that it has the capacity to absorb output from an additional 10,000 acres under cultivation. An acre can accommodate 60 to 100 trees, which means that the conglomerate has the capacity to additionally take on up to 100 million nuts annually.

"We are growing more coconuts in a time when more people want coconut water," Dr Deslandes said. He noted that the initiative will require the investment of the larger food processors locally.

Coconut water is seen as a natural alternative to sports beverages, energy drinks and flavoured water. The water is high in potassium, packed with electrolytes and is fat free. Natural coconut water is also low in sugar.

The Ministry of Agriculture and the CIB are encouraging local farmers and processors to engage with the industry in increasing the production of coconuts which can open the door to new opportunities in the US$19-billion global market for sports recovery drinks.

So far, one major international player, Vita Coco, realised US$20 million from the sale of coconut water in 2009 according to Forbes.com. Coconut water also represented 60 per cent of the US$10-million revenue of ONE beverages, a Brazilian company. Dr Deslandes said Pepsi and Coke are initially targeting Brazil as a source for the coconut water, but he believes as local production increases Jamaica can capture a portion of the overseas market.

Farmers who have available land for coconut production are being given incentives through the CIB in the form of grants, technical assistance, fertiliser and coconut seedlings to produce more coconuts. The CIB will provide the grants free for four years and assistance in planting the seedlings, once the farmer prepares the land for planting and registers each year with the CIB as a coconut farmer. To qualify, the farmers must have at least 1.5 acres of land to accommodate a minimum of 125 coconut seedlings.

Coconut cultivation can be a good investment as all parts of the plant can be used, which contributes to its value-added potential. Basil Been, director of research at the CIB noted that the coconut plant can be used in many different ways to generate earnings for farmers, including making earrings and beads, cocopeat, mats, and fences. Additionally, the coconut can be used to make busta candy. He said this can generate additional local sales in tourist areas.

"If you package it nicely you can sell it to tourists. Look how many tourists come to Jamaica every day. If we can get one out of every 10 tourists who come on the cruise ships to buy coconut products it will make a difference," Been said.

Additionally, once the coconut tree is fully grown it requires little care from the farmer. It can be used as an intercropping plant, acting as a windbreaker for smaller more susceptible plants such as banana in times of hurricanes. One tree can produce coconut every month for up to 80 years.

"There are a lot of problems, but there are also tremendous opportunities as well. We need a new breed of coconut growers who are doing it because it is profitable, not because you can't find anything else to do," Been said.

Been said the CIB is embarking on a programme to increase the level of awareness about the process of producing coconuts to yield more varieties. An estimated 8,000 coconut farmers produce approximately 3.5 million coconut plants over 15,000 hectares locally.

Farmers are encouraged to grow the Maypan variety of coconut plants as this has been shown to be more resistant to heavy winds and rainfall. The fruits are also larger and produce more water per nut than other varieties, a fact which the ministry said is important to processors of the coconut water.

Nearly $13 million cash, expensive liquor seized in raid

THREE men believed to be major players in the multi-million dollar illegal cigarette trade were yesterday arrested during a raid in the upscale Beverly Hills community in Kingston.

More than 56 cases of assorted cigarettes, which the Customs Department valued at $12.9 million, millions of dollars in local and foreign currency, as well as several cases of expensive liquor were seized in the raid carried out by the police's Organised Crime Investigation Division (OCID) and the Customs Enforcement team at 9 Shenstone Drive.

Fake brands of roll-on deodorants were also seized."Cash in British, Canadian, Jamaican and US currencies, totalling approximately J$15 million has been counted thus far by the investigators," head of OCID, Superintendent Fitz Bailey told the Observer.

Bailey said the brands of cigarettes seized were Newport, More, Rothmans, Matterhorn, Marlboro, Craven 'A', Benson & Hedges and Kool, while the liquor included Henessey, Moet Cheandon, Grey Goose, Baileys, Absolut and Hipnotiq.

"It is still very early in the investigation, but we believe that the men are key players in a cigarette racket," Bailey said.

Late yesterday evening, premises in downtown Kingston were being searched as part of the police investigation into the Beverley Hills raid, the police said.

Carreras, the sole legal distributor of Craven A cigarettes in Jamaica, said last week that $300 million worth of illicit Craven As were discovered in the country.

This week, the Sunday Observer reported local authorities as saying that organised criminal gangs and drug dealers are behind the growing multimillion-dollar trade in illicit cigarettes here.

According to the authorities, the drug lords' transition from cocaine and other hard drugs is driven by their desire to avoid the harsh penalties associated with narcotics trafficking, even though breaches of the Trade Marks Act can attract huge fines and prison time.

A survey of the effect of migration on residents of three inner-city communities in Kingston revealed that following the migration of a parent, the number of children registering improved school attendance was more than the number of children attending school less.

However, most migrating persons made little or no provision for their children's education or welfare before leaving the island to reside overseas, the study revealed.

The baseline survey and desk review on the impact of migration on families left behind in the communities of Greenwich Town, Whitfield Town and Rose Town was conducted between October and December of last year. Some 1,200 persons were interviewed for the study.

The survey results were presented by Lisa Taylor-Stone, CEO of SilverStone and Platt Research Solutions Ltd at the Terra Nova Hotel in St Andrew last Friday.

The study showed that following migration of a parent, school attendance improved among 31 per cent of girls and 18 per cent of boys; remained the same among 57 per cent of girls and 69 per cent of boys; and declined among 11 per cent of girls and 12 per cent of boys.

The study said, too, that following migration 56 per cent of the children were left under the supervision of older siblings, while 44 per cent under the supervision of other family members (including close and extended family and family friends).

The survey formed part of a European Commission/United Nations Joint Migration and development initiative project entitled "Mitigating the Negative Impact of Migration on the Multi-Generational Household in Jamaica". The project is being implemented in partnership with Hope for Children Development Company Ltd and HelpAge International.

The project targets 1,500 multi-generational households affected by migration in the three communities and will impact approximately 7,500 persons, roughly one-third of the population in the communities.

The project aims to, among other things, achieve:

* improved policies and programmes affecting migrants and their families in Jamaica;

* greater projection for households;

* better access of households to services, income and livelihood opportunities such as the Programme of Advancement Through Health and Education, Jamaica Drug for the Elderly Programme, the National Health Fund and skills training programmes such as HEART/NTA.

Recommendations to reduce the negative effects of migration include:

* educational programmes and counselling in schools for children of migrants;

* pre-departure sessions for persons migrating;

* monitoring of recruitment agencies to prevent scams;

* establishment of a registry of migrant parents to better monitor children left behind;

* a one-stop immigration centre providing services to migrants; and

* the establishment of a lobby group of returned migrants to mentor new migrants.

According to the PIOJ, from 1996 to 2007, more than 225,000 persons legally migrated from Jamaica to the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada, the three leading destinations for migration.

According to the 2007 Economic and Social Survey of Jamaica, private remittances is one of the leading sources of foreign currency inflows into the country and positively influences welfare and poverty reduction. Remittances make up 17 per cent of Jamaica's Gross National Income.

Some 54 per cent of Jamaican households received remittances from overseas.

Details to be announced at press conference today

FINANCE Minister Audley Shaw announced yesterday that Cabinet has approved the terms of an agreement for the divestment of the operations of Air Jamaica to Caribbean Airlines, effective Friday, April 30.

The finance ministry, in a statement last night, said Minister Shaw; Chairman of Air Jamaica Dennis Lalor; and the airline's president Bruce Nobles will provide details of the divestment at a press conference in Kingston this afternoon.

Air-Jamaica-2-_w370.jpg

Chief Executive Officer of Caribbean Airlines Ian Brunton is expected to be in attendance at the press conference, the finance ministry said.Shaw promised to make a detailed statement on the divestment of Air Jamaica in Parliament next Tuesday, May 4.

In the meantime, the National Workers Union (NWU), which represents Air Jamaica employees, complained yesterday that the airline's management was yet to provide a list of the workers expected to be employed by the Trinidad-based Caribbean Airlines.

NWU President Vincent Morrison said there were also 'pressing matters' concerning the welfare of the workers which he would be raising when he meets with the labour minister, Pearnel Charles.

"I spoke with the minister and informed him that we need to have a meeting by Wednesday the latest," he said. According to the union boss, high on the list for discussions will be the employees' concerns about the non-payment of statutory deductions, the terms of employment with Caribbean Airlines, as well as a number of other related issues.

The union had complained workers who had retired from the airline, as well as those who opted for voluntary redundancy, still do not know how the sale would affect their pension and other benefits.

The NWU had also questioned whether outstanding statutory deductions would be paid before Air Jamaica employees receive their redundancy letters.

"It is just a few days to go before Caribbean Airlines takes over, and at this stage all of these things should have been settled," Morrison said yesterday.

Amy Winehouse is in hospital after drunkenly falling over and bruising her new breasts at the weekend.

The Rehab singer, who underwent breast enlargement surgery seven months ago, sought medical advice after falling over on a night out, also damaging her ribs and cutting her forehead.

She had thought that she had broken something, so she asked her security to take her to hospital. The doctors were worried she might be concussed because she had a big bump on her head and a cut above her eye.

The 26-year-old star reportedly caused chaos at the private London clinic she was admitted to because of her drunken antics, with ward staff having to beg her to calm down.

Amy's injuries have been described as "not serious" but she is refusing to leave hospital after being kept in overnight on Sunday.

The star has already returned to the facility once this month as her implants were causing her pain.

Amy feared she would have to have them removed, but medics eventually gave her the all clear.

'Avatar' Already Biggest Selling Blu Ray Disc In History With 2.7 Million Sold In Just 4 Days. Moves 6.7 Million DVDs Total

James Cameron didn't need 3-D to break this record.

Just four days after debuting on store shelves, "Avatar" has sold 2.7 million Blu-ray discs to consumers in the U.S. and Canada, according to 20th Century Fox -- more Blu-rays than any previous movie has sold. The previous record holder, "The Dark Knight," has sold 2.5 million Blu-rays since its debut 16 months ago.

Fox also sold 4 million standard definition DVDs. The combined total makes "Avatar" the biggest DVD launch of the year, breaking a previous mark of 4 million Blu-ray and DVDs combined set by "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" on its first weekend in March.

"Avatar" also debuted Thursday in France, where it sold a combined 400,000 units on DVD and Blu-ray, the biggest-ever launch in the country. It is at the top of the charts in Germany as well, although specific sales figures weren't immediately available. It goes on sale in Great Britain on Monday.

The huge debut for "Avatar" on home video dispels concerns that consumers wouldn't want to see it on a 2-D home television after most watched it in theaters in 3-D. Eighty-three percent of "Avatar's" $746.4-million domestic gross has come from theaters with 3-D screens. More than 70% of its $1.975-billion international gross has come from 3-D.

The news comes as Fox recently signed deals with kiosk renter Redbox and DVD-by-mail firm Netflix that keep "Avatar" and all of the studio's future releases off the services until 28 days after they go on sale.

"Avatar" provides a much needed shot in the arm to Hollywood's home entertainment business, which saw its revenue fall 8% in the first three months of the year and 5% last year.

Adding that, If the court rules the fine will stand then Im going to send it to the Guinness Book of Records after all if the court says its true then I should get the credit for this remarkable feat.

The police have stated that the speed camera was not at fault, but suspect that it was an error by staff on Mr Turinas paperwork. The court has yet to decide on the case.

Eminem announced the lead song title to his upcoming "Recovery" album, due June 22nd on Shady/Aftermath/Interscope Records, via Twitter today (April 27). "Not Afraid" will be the first single, and the rapper's manager, Paul Rosenberg, says its "an uplifting song."

"It's not a dark song, it's an uplifting song," Rosenberg tells Billboard.com about the Boi-1da-produced track, which is scheduled to be released this week.

About the album's new direction -- reflected in the album's recent title change -- Rosenberg says the set will be "more accessible to more fans. He [Eminem] had pretty much completed a whole second album worth of material but at some point he took a step back, looked at it and said, 'I think I want to record some more,'" he says. "But in recording, the album started to sound so different and was going in such a different direction that he decided to keep it going and turn it into a whole new album. The last album was really for the core Eminem fans. I think this record will open that up a bit."

Producers confirmed on the album include Dr. Dre, Just Blaze, Jim Jonsin and Mr. Porter.

GAYS MUST LEAVE TODAY

Today has been proclaimed 'Gay Eradication Day' by residents of the McGregor Gully community in East Kingston. Residents say that they will be taking action as a two-week notice given to all gays and lesbians to flee the community has now expired.

THE STAR learnt that about two weeks ago angry residents who declared that they were fed up with seeing the activities of several gay persons in their community, ordered that they leave by today or suffer the consequences.

Some residents who admitted to THE STAR that they are a part of the "gay clearing out" scheme said that it is being done to protect their families and the community on a whole.

"Yu nuh si seh dem waa mash up di place an gi wi bad name, me haffi protect my yute dem from dem type a influence deh," one resident said while pointing out that they will not sit back and watch while their community falls into disrepute.

When THE STAR visited the area, a small group of residents pointed out an old community centre which is said to be the main 'hang out' spot for the lesbians. According to the residents the lesbians gather there almost nightly and can be seen hugging, kissing and even "touching".

The residents say they are mostly worried about the lesbian group as they are most prevalent and influential. The number of persons in this group is said to be steadily increasing.

In terms of the suspected gay men, the residents claim they are not as bold as the lesbians and are fewer but they too are expected to comply with the two-week notice.

Good source

"Some yute deh bout di place whe wi hear seh gone di nex way. Wi neva actually ketch dem, but wi hear from good source who si dem out a road a par wid man weh known as 'fish'. Dem nuh nuff still eno, but dem affi lef to, wi nuh want none a dem in ya," another female resident added.

Another resident who was not afraid to point fingers at a specific group of youngsters said that the alleged gays are all friends and are well-known in the community. "Yu si dem bway deh weh a walk up an dung inna dem tight pants an ah bleach out dem face, a dem enuh, nuff a dem a f .... t an a talk bout dem a danca," he told THE STAR.

Since the notice was handed down, at least one person has already fled the community. "... a nuh joke ting eno, one a dem cut out since week, him not even wait pon di last day, him jus cut, nobady not even kno weh him gone," THE STAR was told by a resident.

The residents say they will not stop until their community is "gay free" and are not afraid of resorting to extreme measures.

"Mi nuh know how dem come an a gwaan like seh dem tink a farin dem deh, dem tink seh dem can come inna gangsta town wid dem wrong up behaviour an nuttin nuh happen? Dem haffi leave, anyting a anyting," one obviously angry male said.

Efforts by THE STAR to speak to at least two of the persons alleged to be lesbians were unsuccessful.

German authorities warn others not to try: It will kill you

BERLIN - German police are investigating a man for theft after he siphoned electricity off a high-voltage overhead transmission line for one month with the help of an ordinary meat hook, authorities said on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old man from Sibbesse in Lower Saxony concocted the plan to steal electricity after the power company cut him off for failure to pay his bills, police said.

The man attached a cable to the meat hook and tossed it onto an overhead power line. He then drew power from the transmission line to his home, located about 150 meters away.

"I've never seen anything like this in my 34-year career," said Friedrich-Wilhelm Lach, chief executive of regional utility Ueberlandwerke Leinetal GmbH, told Reuters. "It's incredibly dangerous and utterly stupid."An employee of the utility noticed the meat hook during a routine check. Lach said the man was lucky he is still alive and warned copycats not to try it: "It will kill you," he said.

STEVENSVILLE, Mont. - An 18-year-old in Montana apparently thought it would be funny to yell "I'm going to kidnap you" at a 7-year-old girl, but the joke cost him a $185 fine for disorderly conduct.

The girl told police April 15 that she heard the man yell the threat from a car as she walked on a sidewalk in Stevensville. She helped police in the small town south of Missoula create a sketch, and police Chief James Marble says Justin Stockdale turned himself in Monday after seeing his likeness on flyers distributed around town.

Stockdale pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct, was fined $185 and given a 10-day suspended jail sentence.

Marble says the teen apparently thought it would be funny to scare the girl but it appears he has learned a valuable lesson.

Cops: Man hit pole after beagle dog started throwing up all over him

WINONA, Minn. - Police say an 18-year-old has a pretty good excuse for why he crashed his car into a utility pole in Winona: his dog puked on him.

The Winona Daily News reported police found the car unattended last Thursday morning against an Xcel Energy pole. Witnesses told officers they saw a man leaving the area and walking a beagle.

The teen, who does not have insurance or a Minnesota driver's license, called police about four hours later to confess.

The man told police he was driving when his dog started "throwing up all over him."Deputy Police Chief Tom Williams said the story checked out police found vomit in the car.

The pole had only minor damage. The man was cited for driving without insurance or a license.

Move comes amid signs Mideast peace talks could resume

JERUSALEM - Israeli security forces demolished a handful of illegal structures in West Bank settlements Tuesday, including a wooden bunker that hard-line Jewish activists had defiantly named after President Barack Obama.

Israeli forces also clashed with Palestinian protesters opposed to construction of Israel's West Bank separation barrier. In one incident, paramilitary border police wrestled a teenage boy to the ground, then fired pepper spray directly into his face to subdue him. The youth, screaming in pain, was then arrested.

Nine structures in Jewish settlements were removed, including a wooden bunker north of Jerusalem known as "Obama's Shack," Israeli militaryofficials2_bing.gif said. Young settlers threw burning tires at security forces in another location, and two people were arrested.

The crackdown coincided with growing signs that Israel and the Palestinians are on the verge of resuming peace talks after a breakdown of more than a year.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that he will discuss resuming the talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak when he travels early next week to Egypt, which is a key mediator between the sides.

On Monday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas2_bing.gif signaled he is ready to start indirect negotiations.

"I heard with satisfaction that the Palestinian Authority president intends to resume talks," Netanyahu said at a convention of his Likud party. "I will be happy if this happens next week. We are committed to a real peace process."

Goodwill gestures
The Obama administration has urged Israel to make goodwill gestures since it announced plans for a contentious housing project in disputed east Jerusalem last month. The announcement, coming during a visit by
Vice President JoeBiden2_bing.gif, set off a diplomatic crisis between Israel and Washington and prompted the Palestinians to call off the start of indirect peace talks.

Authorities said the structures demolished Tuesday had been built in violation of a 10-month freeze on new construction in West Bank settlements.

Netanyahu announced the freeze in November under pressure from Obama, who opposes settlement construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem captured lands that the Palestinians claim for a future state.

Netanyahu has repeatedly said he will not freeze construction in east Jerusalem. Israel considers the area, home to sensitive Jewish, Muslim and Christian holy sites, part of its eternal, undivided capital.

But this week, Jerusalem municipal officials said Netanyahu has imposed an unofficial freeze in east Jerusalem since the dispute with Biden erupted on March 9. Netanyahu has not commented publicly on the claims.

69-year-old convict was the last man still serving time in the 1965 killing

NEW YORK - The only man to admit shooting Malcolm X was freed on parole Tuesday, 45 years after he assassinated the civil rights leader.

Thomas Hagan, the last man still serving time in the 1965 killing, was freed from a Manhattan prison where he spent two days a week under a work-release program, state Department of Correctional Services spokeswoman Linda Foglia said.

Hagan, 69, has said he was one of three gunmen who shot Malcolm X as he began a speech at Harlem's Audubon Ballroom on Feb. 21, 1965. But Hagan has said the two men convicted with him were not involved.

They maintained their innocence and were paroled in the 1980s. No one else has ever been charged. The assassins gunned down Malcolm X out of anger at his split with the leadership of the Nation of Islam, the black Muslim movement for which he had once served as chief spokesman, said Hagan, who was then known as Talmadge X Hayer.

'Out of rage'
He has repeatedly expressed regret for his role in the assassination, which he described in a 2008 court filing as the deed of a young man who "acted out of rage on impulse and loyalty" to religious leaders.

"I've had a lot of time, a heck of a lot of time, to think about it," Hagan told a parole board last month, according to a transcript of the interview.

"I understand a lot better the dynamics of movements and what can happen inside movements, and conflicts that can come up, but I have deep regrets about my participation in that," said Hagan, adding that he had earned a master's degree in sociology since his conviction.

The board granted Hagan's parole request on his 17th try. He was initially scheduled for release Wednesday, but the date was moved up because his paperwork was completed, Foglia said.

Hagan declined to comment Tuesday afternoon."I really haven't had any time to gather my thoughts on anything," he said.

The Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center, an organization founded by the civil rights leader's late widow, hasn't taken a position on Hagan's parole, board chairman Zead Ramadan said.

"We just don't think it's ours to decide the fate of this man. We allowed the laws of this nation to develop that," Ramadan said.

But another group, the Malcolm X Commemoration Committee, decried Hagan's parole at a press conference earlier this month. The organization holds essay contests and other events in his memory. The Manhattan District Attorney's office, which prosecuted Hagan and his co-defendants, had no immediate comment on his release.

Under his work-release arrangement, Hagan also spent five days a week working in settings that included a homeless shelter; he spent those nights at his Brooklyn home with his family. He told the parole board he hopes to become a substance abuse counselor.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Police in one Connecticut city have a warning for nightclub patrons: Don't call 911 for a ride home.

New Haven police say that's what 28-year-old Quandria (KWAN'-dree-ah) Bailey did, calling the emergency line six times to request a ride from a nightclub back to her Meriden home.

Bailey was charged with six counts of misuse of the 911 system early Sunday. She was released on a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court May 5.

A telephone number for Bailey could not immediately be located Sunday and it was unclear whether she had an attorney.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - A Riverside County man was arrested for allegedly stealing dozens of fire hydrants to sell for scrap. The man, 45, was arrested Wednesday and remained jailed on Friday. Authorities in San Bernardino and Riverside counties say they suspect the man stole 45 hydrants. They believe he posed as a repairman, shut off the water, unbolted the 80- to 100-pound hydrants and hauled them away in broad daylight.

Authorities said they got a break when a water district employee in San Bernardino became suspicious of a man in an orange safety vest driving a white utility truck the description witnesses gave for the hydrant thief.

Authorities said the hydrants were cut up and sold for scrap for about $1.60 a pound but they cost up to $1,800 to replace.

170x170.aspx Afeni Shakur, mother of world famous rapper Tupac Shakur, will appear in court in May, after she was arrested earlier this month and charged with posession of marijuana.

According to the Fayetteville Observer, Shakur was arrested by state alcohol agents.

Police arrested Shakur on Friday, April 16th and hit with a number of charges, including felony possession of marijuana, maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance and simple possession of a controlled substance.

Shakur, 63, lives in Lumberton, North Carolina, where she oversees the estate of Tupac Shakurmag-glass_10x10.gif.

Mrs. Shakur was released on $10,000 bond and is due in court in Robeson County District Court on May 10th.

A record producer who is accused of attempting to export marijuana was granted bail when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

The accused, Percival Bell, is charged with possession of, dealing in and taking steps to export ganja.

The allegations are that on the day in question, the accused was at the airport when he was searched. A 2kg package was found hidden in a secret compartment.

When the matter was mentioned, the accused man's lawyer told the court that he had borrowed the suitcase. To this, Resident magistrate Judith Pusey asked why a big record producer would want to borrow a suitcase.

Bell was granted $100,000 bail with a surety and was ordered to report to the Freeport police in Montego Bay, St.James, twice a week. He was also ordered to surrender his travel documents and a stop order was issued.

Bell is to return to court on May 28

(CNN) -- Lawmakers in Ukraine scuffled with each other, throwing punches and eggs, as parliament met Tuesday to ratify a treaty with Russia that extends the latter's navy presence in the Ukraine's Crimean peninsula until 2042.

The ruling Regions party eventually ratified the treaty but not before howls of protest from the opposition.

Someone set off a smoke bomb inside the building, while Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn sought refuge behind an umbrella as he was pelted with eggs.

During a rally attended by thousands on Saturday, opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko -- the former prime minister who lost to Viktor Yanukovych in the presidential election run-off in February -- said the ratification must be prevented at all costs.

She claimed that Yanukovych is "selling out" Ukraine, has "openly embarked on the path of destruction of (Ukraine's) national interests, and has actually begun the process of eliminating the state's sovereignty."

The deal was signed last week by Yanukovych and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
Tymoshenko said it violated part of the Ukrainian Constitution, which forbids the country from hosting foreign military bases after 2017.

The deal extends Russia's lease of a major naval base in the Black Sea port of Sevastopol for an additional 25 years, in exchange for a 30 percent cut in the price of natural gas that Russia sells to Ukraine.
The agreement may bring an end to years of disputes over natural gas prices, which culminated in Russia turning off the pipeline to Ukraine.

The dispute affected not only Ukrainians, but many Europeans who depend on Russian gas pumped through Ukraine.

The two countries had been at odds ever since the "Orange Revolution" swept Yanukovych's fiercely anti-Russian predecessor Viktor Yushchenko to power in 2005.

Throughout his time in office, Yushchenko repeatedly threatened to expel Russia's Black Sea Fleet from Sevastopol. The Russian military lease there was scheduled to expire in 2017.

Yanukovych said the new deal added a "concrete and pragmatic dimension" to centuries of relations between Ukrainians and Russians.

Opposition groups in Ukraine, however, were quick to denounce the agreement. Yuschenko's "Our Ukraine" party said the treaty would lead to the "Russification" of Ukraine

Mounting pressure from a number of leading media entities in the United States on the extradition request for Tivoli Gardens strong-man Christopher 'Dudus' Coke is doing serious damage to the Bruce Golding administration's legitimacy, the Opposition has declared.

Reacting to the latest article published by an American newspaper, Opposition Spokesman on National Security Peter Bunting said yesterday that "it really has some sinister implications".

Bunting's comments came against the background of a New York Times article published online Sunday, which identified Coke as a "powerful player in Jamaican politics, so much so that the US State Department's attempt to extradite him has rattled relations between the United States and Jamaica".

Bunting has also insisted that the prime minister "come clean" on the Manatt, Phelps and Phillips affair, which has remained a thorn in the flesh of the administration. "I don't think he can run from this issue forever, and we will continue to up the ante in Parliament," Bunting said.

The New York Times joined a number of other respected media entities in North America, such as The Washington Post and The Economist, and the Toronto Globe and Mail in Canada, to weigh in on a story that has ignited a flaming debate on the Coke extradition and Manatt sagas.

Golding is expected, two weeks from now, to answer questions in Parliament on the reported contractual arrangement between the Government and the US law firm, which had been posted on the US Department of Justice website. Manatt pulled out of the contract in February, indicating that it no longer represented the Government of Jamaica in treaty matters.

Government to respond

General secretary of the Jamaica Labour Party and senior government minister, Karl Samuda, in a terse comment yesterday, said the administration would respond to the issue shortly.

In a related matter, Bunting told The Gleaner yesterday that the legal team of the People's National Party (PNP) was ready to address the motion filed by Attorney General Dorothy Lightbourne seeking a decla-ration on the handling of the extradition request for Coke. The attorney general wants the court to declare what she can take into account in deciding to issue the authority to proceed in extradition matters.

In her capacity as president of the PNP, Portia Simpson Miller was named as the third defendant because she reportedly ques-tioned the minister's authority to decline the extradition request.

Coke has been named as a defendant because he is the person in the extradition request, while Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica President Joseph M. Matalon has been named as second defendant because the organisation he represents questioned the right or authority of the minister to decline the extradition request. The hearing has been set for May 5.

Jah Cure, born Siccature Alc**k, pleaded not guilty to ganja possession when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

The 32-year-old entertainer appeared in court on a charge of possession of ganja.

According to the allegations, about 11 a.m. last Thursday (April 22), police saw a white BMW being driven recklessly along Dunrobin Avenue, St Andrew, and it was signalled to stop.

The police alleged that while talking to the driver, the aroma inside the vehicle and the scent coming from the accused man's mouth was similar to the essence of marijuana.

The police told the court that he asked the accused if he had ganja in his possession and he was told "yes". The vehicle was searched and an ounce of ganja was reportedly found. The accused man was arrested and charged.

Jah Cure is known for songs such as Love Is, Reflection and his recent hit Call on me with Alison Hinds. He will return to court on May 6.

(CNN) -- Thomas Hagan pleaded his case for freedom: To return to his family, to become a substance abuse counselor and to make his mark on what time he has left in this world.

He was dressed in prison greens as he addressed the New York parole board. He had been before that body 14 other times since 1984. Each time, he was rejected.

Hagan is no ordinary prisoner. He is the only man to have confessed in the killing of Malcolm X, who was gunned down while giving a speech in New York's Audubon Ballroom in 1965.

"I have deep regrets about my participation in that," he told the parole board on March 3, according to a transcript. "I don't think it should ever have happened."

The board granted him his wish. On Wednesday, Hagan, 69, will be free.

He was sentenced to 20 years to life imprisonment after being found guilty at trial with two others in 1966. Since March 1992, Hagan has been in a full-time work-release program that allowed him to live at home with his family in Brooklyn five days a week while reporting to a minimum-security prison just two days.

To win his release, Hagan was required to seek, obtain and maintain a job, support his children and abide by a curfew. He must continue to meet those conditions while free. He told the parole board he's worked the same job for the past seven years. He told the New York Post in 2008 he was working at a fast-food restaurant.

A parole officer checked on him while outside prison, and he had to undergo random drug tests.

I can't really describe my remiss and my remorse for my actions.
--Thomas Hagan, killer of Malcolm X

The prison to which Hagan has reported for two nights a week, the Lincoln Correctional Facility, is at West 110th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard.

CNN was unable to reach Hagan for a comment about his release. The Nation of Islam declined comment for this story.

Malcolm X is best known as the fiery leader of the Nation of Islam who denounced whites as "blue-eyed devils." But at the end of his life, Malcolm X changed his views toward whites and discarded the Nation of Islam's ideology in favor of orthodox Islam. In doing so, he feared for his own life from within the Nation.

Malcolm X remains a symbol of inspiration for black men, in particular, who are moved by his transformation from a street hustler to a man the late African-American actor Ossie Davis eulogized as "our own black shining prince."

The ballroom where he was killed has now been converted into The Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center. Board Chairman Zead Ramadan said the center doesn't have a position on Hagan's release.

"I personally find it strange that for a couple decades any person convicted in the assassination of such an iconic figure would be allowed such leniency," Ramadan said.

There's outrage among some African-Americans, he said, that he's being released. Would he be set free if he had killed an iconic white leader?

"It's really a struggle for Muslims to contemplate this issue, because our faith and our religion is full of examples where we have to exert mercy," he added. "The Malcolm X story has not ended. His populuarity has grown in death. ... Only God knows why this was allowed to happen."

The center is preparing for a special service next month to celebrate what would have been Malcolm X's 85th birthday. Would the center welcome Hagan if he asked to attend?

"We'd cross that bridge if he called us," Ramadan said, "Think about that: How far-fetched is it that he could meet one of the daughters of Malcolm X? And what's going to happen then? Mercy, fury, anger, emotions -- who knows?"

Killed in front of his family

On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X took to the stage of the Audubon Ballroom, a site often used for civic meetings. His wife, Betty Shabazz, and four children were in the crowd.

Malcolm X was 39 when he was gunned down in 1965.
Malcolm X was 39 when he was gunned down in 1965.

"I heard several shots in succession," his wife later told a Manhattan grand jury. "I got on the floor, and I pushed my children under the seat and protected them with my body."

Gunshots continued to ring out, she said. Her husband's body was riddled with bullets. The native of Omaha, Nebraska, was 39.

"Minister Malcolm was slaughtered like a dog in front of his family," A. Peter Bailey, one of Malcolm X's closest aides, told The New York Times on the 40th anniversary of the killing.

The assassination came after a public feud between Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam's founder, Elijah Muhammad. Malcolm X had accused Muhammad of infidelity and left the Nation in March 1964.

"For the next 11 months, there was a pattern of ha****ment, vilification and even on occasion literally pursuit in the streets of Malcolm by people associated with the Nation," said Claude Andrew Clegg III, author of a biography on Elijah Muhammad called An Original Man.

"Malcolm felt that if Elijah Muhammad snapped his fingers, then he could stop the escalation of the violent tone around the split of the two men. And I think there's some truth to that."

Over the years, the killing of Malcolm X has been the subject of much debate, with conspiracy theories involving the Nation of Islam and others. The Nation of Islam has repeatedly denied any involvement in Malcolm X's assassination.

Twenty-two and on a deadly mission

Hagan, then known by the name Talmadge X Hayer, was 22 and a radical member of the Nation of Islam the day he entered the ballroom armed and ready to kill. His allegiance was to the Nation's founder, and he was outraged Malcolm X had broken from its ranks.

After the shooting, Hagan tried to flee the scene but he was shot in the leg. He was beaten by the crowd before being arrested outside.

Thomas Hagan is pictured here in a mugshot from 2008.
Thomas Hagan is pictured here in a mugshot from 2008.

Last month, he told the parole board he felt the urge to kill Malcolm X because of his inflammatory comments about the Nation's founder.

"It stemmed from a break off and confusion in the leadership," Hagan said. "Malcolm X broke with the Nation of Islam, separated from the Nation of Islam, and in doing so there was controversy as to some of the statements he was making about the leader."

He added, "History has revealed a lot of what Malcolm X was saying was true."

Two other men, Muhammad Abdul Aziz and Kahlil Islam, were also found guilty of murder in 1966 and received 20 years to life. Both proclaimed their innocence. Hagan, who eventually admitted his part in the murder, testified at trial and subsequent parole hearings that both men were innocent. Aziz was paroled in 1985; Islam was freed in 1987.

At last month's parole hearing, Hagan again maintained that Aziz and Islam were not the other assassins. He said it was two other men who helped plot, plan and participate in the killing.

Did they receive orders from the Nation to carry out the killing?

"I can't say that anyone in the Nation of Islam gave us the idea or instructed us to do it. We did this ourselves for the most part, yes," Hagan told the parole board.

Hagan said he received a master's degree in sociology while incarcerated and that has helped him deal with his actions from 45 years ago.

"I understand a lot better the dynamics of movements and what can happen inside movements and conflicts that can come up, but I have deep regrets about my participation in that."

He added, "Unfortunately, I didn't have an in-depth understanding of what was really going on myself to let myself be involved in anything like that. ... I can't really describe my remiss and my remorse for my actions -- basically a very young man, a very uneducated man. "

He is still a Muslim but no longer a member of the Nation of Islam. He volunteers at a mosque to help young men. He told the parole board he hopes to become a qualified substance abuse counselor.

His primary mission is to help his four children, ages 21, 17, 14 and 10. He has two other grown children.

"My focus is to maintain my family and to try to make things a little better for them. It's upward mobility, and to encourage my children to complete their education because it's a must."

Jamaica has been hit with more negative publicity regarding the Government's delay in granting an extradition request for West Kingston strongman Christopher "Dudus" Coke.

Another major US newspaper has published an article highlighting strained relations between Jamaica and United States on the matter.

Two weeks after the Washington Post carried an article on the Dudus affair and the link with the US law firm Manatt, Phelps and Phillips the widely circulated New York Times Sunday published a report which placed the country and the Bruce Golding administration in more negative light.

The article headlined: "U.S. Extradition Effort Strains Relationship With Jamaica" gave a synopsis of the wrangling between Jamaica and the US over its request for Mr. Coke.

It also highlights Mr. Coke's close ties with the Jamaica Labour Party and the power which he wields in Jamaica's political arena.

The article also makes mention of the criminal allegations against Mr. Coke and the Golding administration's refusal to hand him over to US authorities on the grounds that information in the case was obtained via illegal wiretapping.

The New York Times also touched on the deepening controversy over the Government's dealings with Manatt, Phelps and Phillips.

Food Kartel

Adrian Frater, News Editor

Western Bureau:

While most of the top acts sparkled, it was the little-known deejay Food Kartel who stole the spotlight as he left patrons in a euphoric tizzy at Sunday night's concert phase at the 2010 Westmoreland Curry Festival at the Mannings School in Savanna-la-mar.

It was a case of offering patrons, who had spent the earlier part of the day sampling a wide array of curried delicacies, a musical desert as screams of delight and spontaneous dancing greeted the food-based lyrics, which Food Kartel delivered with confidence and authority.

Hitting the stage after stellar performances from the likes of Ken Boothe, John Holt, I-Octane and a dazzling Nesbeth, Food Kartel, nattily attired in red and white, took the venue by storm, as he ruled supreme with songs such as Come Cook Fi Me, Nah Get None and Last Dish.

When Food Kartel left the stage, the buzz and screams for "more, more" left MC Ron Muschette with no choice but to call him back for a well-deserved encore. Food Kartel quickly re-established command, again rocking the crowd with a song titled Nice Food.

Warm welcome

Nesbeth, who preceded Food Kartel, was also in exemplary form. Hitting the stage to a warm welcome, he was soon in full-flight, delighting with songs such as Board House, Drive By, Guns Out and Mi Baby Mother. With the crowd operating like a well-schooled choir, it was quite clear that Nesbeth could do no wrong.

I-Octane, who performed before Nesbeth, showed why he is so revered in music circles with a classy set steeped in maturity and control. He was simply awesome on Mama, My Life and the compelling Lose a Friend.

Jah Cure, arguably reggae's most sought-after act at this time, took the stage shortly before the security fence at the front of the stage broke down, hurting a few patrons. He quickly settled the situation and had the patrons dancing in delight as he made his mark with Longing For, Love Is, You Will Never Find, Call On Me and a super rendition of Unconditional Love.

Assassin again advertised himself as a superstar in the making. Soaking up all the energy he could pull from the crowd, he delivered generously from his rapidly expanding catalogue. He was on top of his game with Don't Mek Me Hold You, Leave Us Alone and Bad Mind People, among other songs.

In the early stages of the show, the pace was brilliantly set by the likes of the veteran Ken Boothe, who took the younger patrons to school with classics like When I Fall in Love, Moving, Puppet On a String and You Shelter Me. Vocalist Stevie Face, who performed in that segment, also sparkled, connecting well with Wake Up With You, Should I Be Love and I Don't Need Nobody.

Hilarious set

John Holt, who followed a hilarious set by comedians Apache Chief and Free Man, was velvet-smooth as he proved himself a bonafide crowd-pleaser with songs such as Tide is High, Ali Baba, Carpenter, Tribal War and Police in Helicopter.

While the likes of Tifa and Sophia Squire made their presence felt with well received sets, D'Angel, the self-proclaimed first lady of dancehall, was easily the most outstanding female performer. She was bang on target, unleashing songs like Hot Gal A Road, First Lady, Blaze and Me Have, which was done in combination style with upcoming deejay Versatile.

Clash king KipRich was his usual entertaining self, exciting the fans with his special blend of social commentary and comedic offering. Songs such as Bun fi Bun and Telephone, which blended perfectly with his stage antics, were enough to make fans happy.

New kid on the block, House of Leeds' promising young rapper J-Yungg, surprised many with his driving lyrics and clearly had the female fans under his power as he sizzled with songs such as Bring Me Down and Grange Hill. Iyahblazze, the top act out of House of Leeds, was also in fine fettle, rocking the crowd with Rasta, Heart fi di Poor and At The Movies.

Among the other acts who held their own were the likes of Grandson, Justice Merchant, Bomblast, Spring I, G-Whizz and Danny English and Egg Nog.

Reggae/Dancehall To Gain From Digital Distribution
21ST Interview with OUTAROAD

Kingston, Jamaica -- No one knows better than those in the music industry how difficult and sometimes unrewarding music distribution can be, but those of 21st Hapilos have found another way to intensify Dancehall/Reggae distribution worldwide while having it pay off for local producers - that of digital distribution.

Digital distribution which entails selling and distributing songs online is nothing new, but ace digital music marketer, Johnny Wonder Executive Vice President of the US/Jamaican company, explains how fulfilling and rewarding the service is for producers and artistes.

"Promoting the songs for sale online is in an effort to drive revenue for those in the industry. Digital distribution is both cheaper and more accessible to fans overseas; it's something we stand to gain a lot from," he said.

Among the productions being distributed by 21st Hapilos are the Remedy Riddim produced by Russian of Head Concussion Camp featuring Chan Dizzy's Go Hard An' Done, CR203 and Adijahiem/NotNice Records' Mad Collab Riddim featuring Vybz Kartel, Popcaan and Gaza Slim's reigning hit,Clarks; TJ Records' DNA Riddim, Romeich Records' Bank In A Mi Pocket Riddim which features, Bank In A Mi Pocket by Versatile in addition to a plethora of riddim productions.

Since the productions have been released for sale online, they have shown consistent growth and Wonder and others at 21st Hapilos are confident that with further promotion of the productions in the local and international markets the sales will continue to rise, thus further benefitting Reggae/Dancehall producers and artistes.

The company's upcoming releases include John John's Zion Gate Riddim, Seanizzle's Survival Mode, Delly Ranx's Iron Fist and G-Whizz's single, Tomorrow, produced by TJ Records, which are also expected to be heavy-hitters in the digital arena.

With eight contestants the previous week, one was to be eliminated on the night. But there was a twist as there was a dance-off between Influence Dancers and Kritical.

The decision was turned over to the judges, and it was unanimous. Kritical was out of the competition after a below-par performance.

Target Dancers came into this round in the top spot, knocking Card Unit off their perch. However, It was the female duo group Kleva K's that brought the house down on the night, at least in the eyes of the judges, gaining a perfect score with Shady Squad.

Influence, Card Unit and the very creative Untouchable Squad also scored well, gaining over 20 points. G1 Dancers, failing to impress even the least bit, scored a meagre 12 points as did Target Dancers who scored 15 and Escalade 18.

While Kleva K's gained the most points on the night, it was clear who the crowd favoured most. If you haven't guessed by now, it was none other than Card Unit.

As soon as the group entered the stage, the cheers erupted and the cards came to life with a 'confetti effect'.

The group, according to some members of the audience, were short-changed by the judges, as the score did not reflect their performance.

For Irrelle Smith, newest member of the group, the feedback in the street, is great.

"Di people in the streets where we go say di competition is ours, but mi tell dem say, dem must keep the votes coming in as that is what counts at the end of the day," he said.

ImageLeaders of Brazil and CARICOM are meeting in the Brazilian capital Brasilia, to discuss how they can raise their relationship to another level.

CARICOM is aware that the burgeoning might of Brazil offers the region an opportunity for both economic and aid.

In his address to the opening of the Brazil/CARICOM Summit, Luiz Inacio Da Silva, the Brazilian President, called on CARICOM countries to join Latin America in constructing what he called a new order of co-operation without external direction.

He said Brazil which has observer status in CARICOM wants to become a true partner with the Community.

He announced Brazil's decision to become a full member of thr Caribbean Development bank and to intensify co-operation with CARICOM in the areas of research and science and technology.

Ahead of the Summit, the Brazilian government released figures showing remarkable growth in trade with the 15 member grouping.

Trade rose from US$657 million in 2002 to US$5.2 billion last year, 85% of which is made up of exports from the South American giant, one of the four major bric emerging economies which also include Russia, India and China.

Facilitating CARICOM's integration into the global market

CARICOM wants to cut that massive deficit and Chairman, Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of Dominica, said the region's partnership with Brazil would help fuel trade between the bloc's members and other countries around the round.

"This bridge will help make available a trade route which will further the efforts of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy which is intended to provide the spring board to facilitate CARICOM's integration into the hemispheric and global environment through more competitive production, thereby enhancing our trade relations," Mr. Skerrit said.

One of the main issues of the Summit is the reconstruction of Haiti following January's devastating earthquake.

Brazil has pledged US$300 million in support.

ImageThe police are reporting that the five men who were killed in Salt Spring, St. James early Sunday morning may have been targeted because they defied orders to join the notorious Montego Bay based Stone Crusher Gang.

The police say they will be in the community to provide adequate protection even though this poses a major challenge for policing.

At the house where Damion Brooks, Byron Powell and a still unidentified man were killed and their bodies badly burnt, the hose that was used to douse their charred remains was still connected to the pipe.

A foul stench emanated from a mattress on which one of the men was killed.

Cornel Brown, 20, Elton Hines, 23, both of Bird Hill in Salt Spring, are the other victims.

Superintendent Merrick Watson, Commander for the St. James Police Division, along with Denver Frater, Assistant Commissioner for Area One visited the area where the men were killed.

Superintendent Watson said the police theorize that the men were killed because they refused to join the Stone Crusher Gang.

He said the dead men were not on their wanted list but at least two of them were persons of interest.

Superintendent Watson promised a stable police presence in Salt Spring, despite the fact that the community is difficult to police because of its terrain and overall structure.

Deejay's lyrics said to be too violent

Popular deejay AdiDja Palmer, more popularly known as Vybz Kartel or Addi di Teacha, has been barred from performing at a show in Grenville, St Andrews, in Grenada scheduled for May 2.

The Star has learnt that the artiste was banned from the event, Rap-it-up, which was to mark the official launching of his Daggerin condoms in that island, after government officials turned down his work permit, stating that his songs were too lewd and violent.

facing losses

Dexter Tillock, promoter for the event, said he got the news last Friday and is now facing losses amounting to more than US$5,000 (J$445,000). "The ministry told me that they listened to his (Vybz Kartel) lyrics and they don't want him performing in Grenada," Tillock said. "Everybody was looking forward to it because he has a good following here. The people are really not happy because they were looking forward to it, everything else was in place for the show. "

The promoter said he would be seeking an audience with Grenada's Ministry of Labour on Tuesday to see if they could exercise some leniency. He said should this fall through, he will be seeking legal advice as it relates to claiming for losses as neither himself nor the artiste were aware of the government's blacklisting.

recent ban

Attempts to get in contact with Palmer were unsuccessful as calls to his cellphone went unanswered. Messages were left on his voicemail, however, the calls were not returned. His publicist also could not be reached.

The recent ban brings to three the number of local deejays who have been banned from performing in neighbouring islands.

Last April, veteran deejay Bounty Killer, real name Rodney Price, and singjay Mavado, real name David Brooks, were banned from entering Guyana. The country's home affairs ministry said they were blacklisted because of their lyrics, which posed a security risk.

DUBAI (Reuters)- Started at the height of the economic boom and built by some 12,000laborers, the world's tallest building will open on Monday in Dubai asthe glitzy emirate seeks to rekindle optimism after its financialcrisis.

BurjDubai10.jpg

Burj Dubai, whose opening has been delayed twice since constructionbegan in 2004, will mark another milestone for the deeply indebtedemirate with a penchant for seeking new records.

Dubai, one of seven members of the United Arab Emirates, gained areputation for excess with the creation of man-made islands shaped likepalms and an indoor ski slope in the desert.

With investor confidence in Dubai badly bruised by the emirate'sannouncement in November that it would seek a debt standstill for oneof its largest conglomerates, the Burj Dubai is seen as a positivestart to the year after a bleak 2009.

The project has been scrutinized by human rights groups, who haveobjected to its treatment of laborers, as well as by environmentalistswho said the tower would act as a power vacuum, increasing the city'salready massive carbon footprint.

But despite the criticism, many say the edifice, believed to have cost $1.5 billion to build, is an architectural marvel.

The tower's height has been kept a closely guarded secret until now.Developer Emaar Properties PJSC will reveal the height -- known toexceed 800 meters (2,625 feet) -- on Tuesday and Dubai's ruler willinaugurate the opening.

Experts believe Dubai's recent financial troubles have not hurt salesof approximately 1,100 residential units in the Burj -- meaning towerin Arabic -- saying they were nearly all sold.

Dubai's real estate sector crashed at the end of 2008 when the globalfinancial crisis hit the emirate after a six-year economic boom.Thousands of jobs were slashed and projects worth billions of dollarswere canceled or delayed.

With analysts suggesting tax-free Dubai might sell some of its assetsto boost revenues and slash $80 billion in debt, many wondered if thetower was on the list for grabs.

Dubai, with few natural resources of its own, expects a budget deficit of 2 percent of GDP this year.

In December, the emirate received a $10 billion lifeline fromneighboring Abu Dhabi to repay a $4.1 billion bond for Nakheel, aproperty arm of indebted Dubai World, and other obligations.
