ONLY 45 per cent of students achieved mastery in the grade four Numeracy test for the 2008/2009 academic year, highlighting the dismal performance of Jamaican children in mathematics at the primary level, results published yesterday showed.
The results also underscored the huge gulf in the performance of students in public primary-level schools compared with those in private or independent schools.
The grade four numeracy test was administered nationally for the first time in 2008. It was piloted in 16 schools in 2006, and done by 71 schools in 2007.
In only 19 out of 789 public primary and all-age schools, or two per cent of the total, did 80 per cent or more of the students master the exam. In 75 public schools, or 9.5 per cent of the schools, 60 to 79 per cent of the students mastered the exam.
However, in 87 out of 210 private schools, or 41 per cent, 80 per cent or more of the students mastered the exam. In 58 private schools, or 27.6 per cent of the total, 60 to 79 per cent of students mastered the exam.
Yesterday, Education Minister Andrew Holness said he would reserve comment as he had not yet perused the results.
The results showed that in several schools no child was able to master the numeracy test. For example, in tiny Somerset All-Age in St Andrew, only four out of 12 students registered in grade four sat the exam; none of them passed.
At the other end of the spectrum, Jessie Ripoll Primary in Kingston showed that it is one of the top schools in the Corporate Area; 85 per cent of the large grade four enrolment of 143 students mastered the numeracy test.
According to the Ministry of Education, the numeracy test checks skills in areas such as number representations and number operations with whole, decimals and fractions, including money, measurement, geometry, algebra, and statistics and probability.
THE bill to legislate casino gaming in Jamaica has now been signed into law by the governor general.
Sir Patrick Allen signed the bill following its passage in both houses of Parliament in March.
Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service Senator Arthur Williams outlined the next steps to be taken, which include the establishment of the Casino Gaming Commission and appropriate regulatory framework.
Now that the law has been passed, the ministerial order is imminent, Williams said.
He said that the major challenge is to ensure that the casinos are run according to regulations.
In this regard, apart from the main legislation, detailed regulations have to be promulgated, he said.
He urged Jamaicans not to lose sight of what he said will be the economic benefits that can accrue from this landmark development.
Casino gaming will expand our tourism product, increase earnings, generate employment and increase tax revenues, Williams said.
To facilitate the Commission's functions, government is seeking to amend the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Act 1975, under which the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission currently regulates and controls the operations of betting and gaming and the conduct of lotteries in Jamaica.
1,000 to be rehired by Caribbean Airlines
ALL 1,500 members of staff of national carrier Air Jamaica whose jobs have been made redundant will tomorrow receive their severance pay, totalling US$24 million (app J$2.4 billion), airline officials promised yesterday.
The workers, some of whom served the national carrier for more than two decades, will receive their final pay cheque from the airline as the transition process for the divestment of the operations of the troubled airline into the hands of Trinidad and Tobago's carrier, Caribbean Airlines, takes effect on Saturday.
Air Jamaica chairman Dennis Lalor said "approximately 1,000 of the 1,500 staff complement of the entity will be rehired by Caribbean Airlines"."We have the assurance of the Government that the redundancy payments to all the persons who are being made redundant will be made on Friday, along with their letters of termination," Lalor told journalists at a press conference yesterday at Air Jamaica's head office in downtown Kingston.
The Air Jamaica chairman said the Government has also pledged to honour all statutory payments.
"Arrangements have been made to take care of those payments and therefore there should be no disruption economically to anybody who is being made redundant," he said, noting that all US$250 million of the Government's legacy costs, including debts, would be met.
The Government, in a process fraught with misses, began the trek in March 2008 to rid itself of the operations of Air Jamaica, which wracked up a deficit of US$1.54 billion in its 42-year operation.
Air Jamaica employees, led by their union representatives, have for months been up in arms over their redundancy benefits, as well as possible employment with Caribbean Airlines.
In the meantime, Lalor made it clear yesterday that there would be no disruption of service on Air Jamaica's routes when Caribbean Airlines takes over.
"All the tickets issued to passengers by Air Jamaica will be honoured," he said, pointing out that after six to 12 months Caribbean Airlines will be fully in charge of flying Air Jamaica's routes to and from the island.
Lalor also told reporters that while the full financial responsibility of Air Jamaica would be assumed by Caribbean Airlines, the Jamaican Government would remain the owner of all of the airline's other assets, including its real estate.
Yesterday, Director of Caribbean Airlines Shafeek Sultan-Kahn, in responding to the angst of the Air Jamaica workers and their unions, said their caution was not without reason.
"We have done our due diligence... we have been criticised of not meeting with the unions but it would be premature, presumptuous of us to make any representations with unions for one simple reason, we have no workers as yet. Air Jamaica is still the employer until the 30th," Sultan-Kahn said.
"We are in the process of making offers of employment; that process for some 1,000 workers is going to go on today and tomorrow and some workers will be free to accept or reject our offer.
"Where we are now is the offers of employment on or before Friday we will see how many persons have accepted; if we do have vacancies our plan is to first come to Air Jamaica's former employees, those who were laid off before," he added.
Sultan-Kahn said the emphasis would be on a "lean organisational structure", as he responded to questions about the apparent 'top-heavy' structure at Air Jamaica.
"What we hope to do is have an integrated airline on or before a year. All the management is not coming over. Lean, but hopefully not mean," he said.
Meanwhile, Air Jamaica's officials said the Trinidadian carrier has emerged as one of the leading airlines in the Caribbean, in terms of operational performance. They said the combination of Caribbean Airlines' strong expertise in airlines operation and Air Jamaica's strength, in particular in the areas of marketing and online sales, would help to create a very solid Jamaican airline operation.
Arguing that Caribbean Airlines has adequate financial strength to sustain their commitment to Jamaica, the carrier's management noted that the Government of Trinidad and Tobago has agreed to increase Caribbean Airlines' capital by US$50 million, providing more than adequate comfort to the divestment committee that adequate funding will be available to the project.
OPPOSITION Leader Portia Simpson Miller has filed a writ in the Supreme Court asking to be relieved as a defendant in the action brought by Attorney General Dorothy Lightbourne, who is seeking declarations on her powers to act in relation to the contentious extradition of Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.
Simpson Miller, in her notice of application filed Tuesday, knocked the attorney general's action, charging that the move was an attempt to circumvent extradition proceedings against Coke, who is wanted in the United States on alleged drugs- and gun-running charges.
Additionally, Simpson Miller said that it was the United States that should be named as defendant as it is their interests that are being affected by the action brought by Lightbourne.
In the court document, which was filed by law firm Dabdoub, Dabdoub and Company, the Opposition leader declared that she had no "personal knowledge, information, documents, or evidence that could assist the court".
Simpson Miller is also seeking cost for her application, which will be heard on May 5.
The Opposition leader and Joseph Matalon, the president of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica, were named as defendants in the action brought by Lightbourne because they publicly questioned her authority to decline the extradition request made by the US last year August. Coke is also named as a defendant.
The decision to take the matter to the High Court was made by Prime Minister Bruce Golding, who has argued that the evidence submitted by the Americans against Coke was gathered in breach of Jamaican law.
GENEVA, Switzerland Haiti is expected to benefit from new legislation making it difficult for dictators to stash cash in Swiss bank accounts.
Legislators are expected to vote on the new measures that would allow Switzerland to give aid groups in Haiti at least US$4.6 million claimed from Swiss bank accounts by former dictator Jean-Claude Baby Doc Duvalier, the Swiss government said yesterday.
Foreign Minister Micheline Calmey-Rey said it is hoped that with the new legislation cases such as ... Duvalier will not happen again.
In January, Switzerland's top court decided that US$4.6 million must be returned to the Duvalier's family because the statute of limitations on any crimes committed by them would have expired in 2001.
The Swiss government rushed through an emergency decree saying the funds were of criminal origin and should go to aid agencies working in the Haiti that was devastated by a powerful earthquake on January 12, killing an estimated 300,000 people and leaving many more homeless.
The law, which the government said would work retroactively, would make it easier for assets belonging to deposed dictators to be repatriated to national governments.
Under the new law, Switzerland's administrative court would be able to confiscate or freeze dictator cash in Swiss banks, even if a country is not able to prosecute its deposed leader. The purpose of confiscating the assets is to fund aid programmes that help improve people's living conditions in such a country, a Swiss government statement said.
It said it hopes "this new act can enter into force rapidly so that a solution to the issue of the Duvalier assets can be found as soon as possible".
Haiti made its first request for the money in 1986, shortly after Duvalier was forced out of power.
A man has died after an eel that was inserted into his rectum gnawed away at his bowels, causing agonising injuries which were eventually fatal.
The 59-year-old man, a chef, was reportedly taken to a Sichuan hospital complaining of abdominal pain, dehydration and a great deal of anal bleeding. He was soon diagnosed as being in a severe state of shock.
Doctors were mystified as to the cause, and obtained permission from his family to undertake an exploratory laparotomy. Cutting open his innards, they discovered a 50cm long Asian swamp eel lodged in his rectum.
Though dead, the eel had apparently already wrought havoc on his innards, biting its way through his intestines prior to dying. Internal bleeding and infection rapidly set in.
He was reported to have eaten a lot of eel the previous day, but otherwise doctors had no idea how the creature had got there. His condition quickly worsened.
He lingered for 10 days in intensive care but eventually succumbed to the injuries and sepsis.
The likely cause was eventually established he had apparently been drinking with friends, and had passed out. His friends had decided it would be amusing to insert a live eel into his anus whilst he was comatose.
Police have reportedly begun an investigation.
The national airline Air Jamaica is in turmoil Wednesday morning with just 48 hours to go before it is sold to Trinidad's Caribbean Airlines. Air Jamaica employees at the two major airports, the Sangster International Airport in St. James and the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, stopped working. Reports are that various categories of workers downed tools they learned that some positions had been made redundant. One thousand 600 positions are to be made redundant come Friday in time for the handover to Caribbean Airlines. Travellers were warned to brace for disruptions after unions representing the workers instructed them to take industrial action in the form of a sit-in. The instructions were issued on Tuesday night following concerns about the manner in which the Lovebird is being sold and the lack of respect being shown to employees. With two days to go before ownership of the airline is transferred to Caribbean Airlines, the unions are incensed that they have still not received a detailed list of the number of workers that will be retained by the new owners. They are also concerned that there has been no word on how the sale will impact the workers' statutory deductions and existing benefits such as health insurance. Vice President of the National Workers Union, Granville Valentine, says all categories of Air Jamaica workers in Kingston and Montego Bay will participate in Wednesday's protest. "...pilots, flight attendants, reservations, customer service, maintenance workers, management, non-management, supervisory, technocal staff, ramp attendants, just about every category," Mr. Valentine said. He says normality will return only when all the outstanding issues are addressed. And the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union, which represents flight attendants at Air Jamaica is warning that the airline is in an extreme state of uncertainty. "Well the airline has always been in turmoil but it is festering now so there has to be some clarification as to whether or not the questions we are asking will the answers be supplied by the Government of Jamaica and the management of the airline," Mr. Gayle said. Our news centre has learnt that while some workers have received offer letters to work with Caribbean Airlines when it takes over on Friday, others have been asked to hand over their identification cards and uniforms. One thousand 600 workers' positions will be made redundant come Friday. Stand-by In the meantime, the Ministry of Labour is on stand-by to prevent a total shutdown of Air Jamaica on Wednesday morning. Minister Pearnel Charles says the airline's management and trade union officials are scheduled to meet in a few hours to discuss concerns raised by the airline's employees. Mr. Charles told our news centre that if the unions are still not satisfied after the talks his Ministry will step in. "Well we expect that the meeting with the company and the union will satisfy the union based on what they have written. If after the meeting they require further intervention, the Ministry of Labour will assist," Mr. Charles said. Details of the deal Meanwhile, the country will hear details of the sale of Air Jamaica on Wednesday. Chairman of Air Jamaica and head of the Divestment Sub-Committee, Dennis Lalor and President of the airline Bruce Nobles will lead a press conference scheduled for one o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Chief Executive Officer of Caribbean Airlines, Ian Brunton, will also be in attendance. In addition to the press conference, Finance Minister Audley Shaw will make a detailed statement on the airline's divestment in Parliament on May 4. Tuesday Mr. Shaw announced that Cabinet had approved the terms of an Agreement for the Divestment of the operations of Air Jamaica to Caribbean Airlines effective April 30. |

Jamaican fishermen recovering after 36 days lost at sea
On Monday we reported that two of five fishermen from Jamaican had been rescued after they were lost for more than month at sea. Anthony Hibberd and Jason Noble set sail in the Gentle Breeze from the Old Harbor Bay in Jamaica in mid March and were found on Sunday off the coast of Mexico. The boats captain and two crew men died on the high seas. There has been a tremendous outpour of support by Belizean and Jamaican authorities in assisting the two survivors to recover fully from their ordeal. They remain hospitalized at the Belize Defense Force Medical Center at Price Barracks. News Fives Isani Cayetano has been following this story and today spoke to a high level official from Jamaica about the incident.
Isani Cayetano, Reporting
The survivors are being assisted by officials from the Immigration Department and as luck would have it travel arrangements are being taken care of for a safe return to their homeland. The repatriation effort is being led by CEO in Jamaicas Ministry of Fisheries, Lieutenant Commander Richard Russell.
Richard Russell, CEO Fisheries Division, Jamaica.
richard russel
I met with them this morning some time a little bit after nine and they are in surprisingly high spirits considering the ordeal which they went through for the past thirty-four days, which they have been adrift. And I must give my congratulations to the Belize Defence Force and the authorities of Belize who are taking very good care of these men. They are in very high spirits.
Isani Cayetano
Can you speak to us on what type of assistance is being rendered to these men in order to get back to Jamaica safely?
Richard Russell
I have personally arranged their flight details. Im supposed to get their e-tickets anytime now and hopefully they will be leaving Belize on Monday evening and the honorary consular of Jamaica to Belize, Mr. Dejon has arranged for their emergency travel documents which they should have in their possession hopefully sometime tomorrow morning.
Anthony Hibberd
Both Hibberd and Noble were along with three other men in a fishing vessel when it broke loose from a larger boat it was attached to. During the thirty-four day nightmare three of the men, including the boats captain, perished as Gentle Breeze drifted almost eight hundred nautical miles from Jamaica.
Richard Russell
Hopefully we should have them out of Belize come Monday evening and back to their families in Jamaica who are eagerly awaiting them. I myself have spoken to their families and the owner of the vessel and theyre looking forward to having them back in Jamaica as fast as possible.
The men were rescued thirty nautical miles from Chinchorro, Mexico by Caribe Navigator, a shipping vessel, piloted by a Jamaican Steven Spence. That freightliner was on a weekly cargo delivery to Belize when it encountered the lost fishermen. Also in Belize are Jamaican soldiers who were participating in Tradewinds 2010 who made sacrifices to help their brethrens.

When I walked into the medical center this morning at the Belize Defence Force, there was a Jamaican soldier there who opted not to go on the tour at the end of this particular stint of duty. I think they went to the Mayan Ruins and he opted to stay with the two Jamaican fishermen, counseling, guiding and giving them their first solid meal in over thirty-five days.
Coincidentally, Russell is in Belize on a two-week working visit discussing the impact of over-fishing in Caribbean Waters. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.
Five of the students were in critical condition in the hospital in Jiangsu province, said Zhu Guiming, an official with the propaganda department in Taixing city. Zhu said two teachers and a security guard also were hurt in the attack that happened early in the school day.
The attacker was a 47-year-old local man, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. It said many of the victims were 4 years old and in the same class at the Zhongxin Kindergarten.

A new leak was discovered in the pipes a mile below the ocean's surface. Coast Guard Rear Adm. Mary Landry said National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration experts now estimate that 5,000 barrels a day of oil are spilling into the gulf. Officials had estimated the leak for days at 1,000 barrels a day.
The news came hours after crews tried a test burn on the massive spill to try to slow it from reaching the U.S. shoreline.

The Director of Public Prosecutions yesterday ruled that charges of outrageous public indecency be brought against a policeman who reportedly revealed his privates to schoolchildren at an all-girls school.
The policeman, THE STAR has learnt, was attempting to impress a number of female students at the institution when the incident occurred on Monday.
Allegations are that the girls sounded an alarm after a man showed his private part to the students of the Corporate Area school. The authorities at the school are said to have called the police, who responded quickly.
Upon their arrival, the policemen accosted the strange-behaving man, who was later identified as a member of the police force. He is said to be attached to a police station in the Westmoreland Division.
When THE STAR contacted the Half-Way Tree police about the incident, Deputy Superintendent Michael Phipps confirmed that the incident happened but he did not reveal the name of the accused.
The accused policeman, who is in early 20s, is scheduled to appear in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court today.
Dancehall/Reggae Singjay Vivienne Stephenson, more popularly known as Tanya Stephens, has released her latest album, Infallible, and has made it completely free to download by anyone who wants it.
Stephens announced the release yesterday with a simple statement, Infallible by Tanya Stephens! Feel free to forward the link to as many people as you wish. The album is completely free of cost. Enjoy!!
According to Andrew Henton of Tarantula Records, Stephens own record label, Tanya wanted to do something special for her fans, the major reason being that theres a recession going on, and things are already hard on everyone.
He added also, that Tanya believes that when she gives an album to a major label, technically shes giving it away anyway, so she would much rather give it directly to the fans.
Beenie Man and Rihanna
Krista Henry, Staff Reporter
The promoter of Reggae On The Hill, Roger Hill, has denied claims that Jamaican deejay Beenie Man embar****ed Barbadian singer Rihanna at the event which was held Sunday night in Barbados at Farley Hill National Park .
Reports have been circulating on the Internet that the self-proclaimed King of the Dancehall humiliated Rihanna by discussing onstage the alleged assault of Rihanna by Chris Brown that sparked international attention. In February, Rihanna was reportedly physically beaten by then boyfriend Brown in Los Angeles.
The case is currently before the court with Brown facing two felony charges - assault by means likely to create great bodily injury and making criminal threats.
THE STAR tried contacting Beenie Man's camp for its version of the incident but was unsuccessful. However, at least one Jamaican singer who performed at the show said it was not an awkward incident as "Beenie Man was just being himself and the crowd was taking it as a joke and she (Rihanna) never looked embar****ed".
off-key version
According to www.islandista.wordpress.com in an article titled 'Beenie Man shames Rihanna', a report states "he (Beenie Man) start talking up a set of things about the infamous beating incident between her (Rihanna) and Chris Brown, asking the crowd if they didn't think it was "ah eediat ting weh Chris do", while singing a very off-key version of the hook to Umbrella. You could hear a collective "ooooohhhh!" as the crowd sucked in its breath when he said it.
The report continued, "Beenie kept calling for her and singing Umbrella and lo and behold, she actually came up on the stage. Then he start singing his version of Umbrella, part of which went, 'Mi nuh have no fancy car/but mi neva give you no scar'."
Afterwards, Beenie reportedly told Rihanna that Chris Brown would have a heart attack if he saw the picture of them hugging onstage.
a joke
Hill, however, denied that the incident was an embar****ing one, saying it was all a joke. When contacted by THE STAR, he admitted to not witnessing the whole incident but said, "I heard the Chris Brown thing - I wouldn't say it was embar****ing. She (Rihanna) came onstage of her own free will and was dancing with him and that same night she invited Beenie to an after party which they attended."
Hill elaborated that this was Beenie Man's first time on the event which he described as a success saying, "the show was massive. It's one of the premier events in the Eastern Caribbean for reggae music. Everybody loved it and the artistes got a huge response".
The fifth staging of Reggae On The Hill featured other Jamaican artistes such as Buju Banton, Morgan Heritage, Queen Ifrica, Duane Stephenson, Konshens and a guest performance by Turbulance.
"Hard" singer, Rihanna, is currently in the midst of her European tour with her latest stop having just taken place in Germany. The pop singer performed her hits, old and new, in Oberhausen and entertained fans with her sultry dance moves that have recently become notorious because of all the crotch-grabbing that goes on.
Rihanna admitted during a recent interview that she saves all of the gifts she receives from fans in her house. "I keep them in my theatre at home. Well, it's supposed to be a theatre room but it has just become a storage room. I put everything that my fans give me in there. Letters, gifts, all that stuff."
Rihanna is now currently in Paris and has plans to wrap up the tour on May 24 in Belfast.

The 'Flossing King', deejay Flippa Mafia, is still in custody in the United States.
The deejay, real name Andrew Davis, has been charged with violating the United States Immigration law and is facing possible deportation.
When contacted yesterday, Nicole Navas public affairs specialist/spokesperson U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said that the deejay is now in the custody of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement department. Navas was tight-lipped about the matter, however, and would not disclose further information.
In a previous interview published in THE STAR on April 9, Navas had said that; "Andrew Davis is still in federal custody with U.S. Bureau of Prisons. He has been charged with being in violation of U.S. Immigration law and faces immigration removal proceedings."
Flippa is alleged to have attempted to enter the United States on a boat from the Bahamas with the assistance of two men in March. The deejay was arrested on March 16 and was being held as a prosecution witness against the men, Julio Santiesteban and Armando Amat, who are charged with encouraging and inducing an alien to enter or reside in the United States.
a material witness
Flippa Mafia, who is known for songs such as Dem Yah and Unfinished House, appeared before the United States District Court of the Southern District of Florida on April 2. Shortly after appearing in court he was dismissed as a material witness.
THE WEEKEND STAR last week published a summary of the case against Davis and two other men which was compiled from an affidavit sworn by Matthew Parker, a special agent with the Department of Homeland Security, United States ICE.
According to Special Agent Parker in the affidavit, Davis knew he had no current legal immigration status in the U.S., knowing he would not be able to lawfully re-enter the United States. The affidavit further stated that in March, Davis flew from Jamaica to The Bahamas in order to see some friends and find a way to be smuggled into the United States.
While in The Bahamas, Davis allegedly met with a friend who agreed to smuggle him into the U.S. The friend then introduced Davis to two Cubans, Santiesteban and Amat, who had arrived to pick up a load of Chinese people that never arrived. Davis reportedly paid US$3,000 (J$270,000) for passage to the United States.
The money was reportedly accepted and on March 15 an attempt was allegedly being made to transport Davis to United States on the boat. The United States Coast Guard intercepted the vessel, however, and conducted a search. Upon boarding the vessel, Parker said that the Coast Guard found Santiesteban and Amat, and during a search later found one unaccounted person (Davis) laying down in the cabin of the vessel. The men were taken in for questioning.
Dancehall artiste Mr. Lexx who was charged for rape in New York is once again a free man after the charges against him were acquitted.
In October 2009 Mr. Lexx was slapped with a rape charge after a female reported that he allegedly sneaked into her room at the hotel they were staying and forced himself on her.
Even though Mr. Lexx was going through another stressful period of his career he continues to work hard on his craft making sure his court case didnt get in the way of his career and his fans.
Fans can also expect a medley video for Buss A Wine and I Can Transform Ya which was shot on several locations around New York.
Lady Gaga
International Pop singer Lady Gaga was left in tears after watching a special tribute from her fans, after 268 devotees teamed up to record a message of thanks for their idol.
The footage, posted on YouTube.com, shows hundreds of pictures of Gaga fans from around the world holding up signs which read, "Thank you for giving me a voice."
The film is posted with a note that refers to Gaga's nickname for her fans - Little Monsters. It reads, "268 monsters in one video, all with the same message: Thank you, Mother Monster, for giving us all a voice."
And the Poker Face hitmaker was stunned by the tribute, revealing the messages of support left her in tears.
Elephant Man and Bounty Killer
Sadeke Brooks, Staff Reporter
Days after being released from jail, Bounty Killer recorded a song with fellow deejay Elephant Man, their first collaboration in more than a decade.
Elephant Man said he wrote a song for ZJ Chrome's 'Mad Collab' rhythm but "Chrome seh Elephant, you can't do it alone".
So, according to Ele, when Bounty Killer was released from jail, he contacted him to do the collaboration.
Bounty Killer was granted bail two Fridays ago after spending two weeks in lock-up for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.
While in New York last weekend, Elephant Man said he called Bounty Killer and sang the song, which he described as both party and gangster.
After returning to Jamaica last Sunday, Elephant Man said contact was again made. Eventually, the song, This Is How We Do It, was recorded last Tuesday.
"We do it and a di baddest thing inna di streets now. It's a new era in music. This kinda calm down di situation a way. Him come out and him gone pon the positive side," Elephant Man told THE STAR, noting that he is pleased that Bounty Killer also went to church.
Ele is also happy that they are finally able to do a song together after many years of friendship.
"Fi know seh a Killer buss me and wi friendship stay so long that we can do a collab ... Yuh hear the love and the energy inna di song," he said.
"Fi me, this collaboration is important 'cause Killer come out of jail and me can be there for him as a friend. We just do a happy song and uplift the people dem wid a good collab," Ele added.

The controversial dancehall deejay expressed to Music News that he has so far received a single donation from prominent Attorney At Law and Rastafarian Miguel Lorne, and is seeking more.

Veteran Brazil striker Ronaldo, the all-time top scorer at FIFA World Cup finals with 15 goals, admitted Friday he was not in the frame for a shock return to the national side.
Ronaldo, now 33 and plying his trade with Corinthians of Sao Paulo, has not played for the national team since the 2006 quarter-final loss to France, which brought him his 97th cap for 62 goals.

And while he would like to don the canary yellow shirt again and would answer the call from coach Dunga, the "Phenomenon" says realistically he won't be on the plane to South Africa.
"Given the few matches I have played this season I don't deserve to be in the Brazilian squad, that's clear. But I am still at the call of the coach - after all, it's my country," said Ronaldo, who said in February he would retire at the end of next year.
Appleton May Daze returns next month for five Fridays with a new theme and a new home.
Having moved from Akbar in New Kingston to the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre off Hope Road, May Daze is set to bring an even better party series to its patrons.
Promoters Dwayne Harris and Stephen Willie both say that while they have changed the venue for May Daze, the vision and formula that they started with in 2008 will remain the same.
"When we launched three years ago, we knew that the concept and formula that Stephen and I developed would have worked, but for our third year, we have to try to outdo the previous years, so this May we're taking Appleton May Daze to the movies," said Harris.
One thing that also hasn't changed is the title sponsor, as Appleton comes back on board with the event for its third year. "May Daze is an event that we have seen grow and an event that we have grown with, and we are very proud to be a part of the event for the third successive year" says Brand Manager David Walton. "The best of Appleton is always represented at the event, and this year we promise even better," he continued.
The event, which will take place every Friday in May, will see something special this year - the event will extend to what the promoters are calling 'May 35th'.
frolic and fun
"There are only four Fridays in May this year, and our patrons have been used to five nights of frolic and fun. Why should the calendar stop us? So we're renaming June 4th and calling it May 35th, which will be the grande finale of Appleton May Daze 2010," Harris said.
More than 2,500 people at a time crammed into the space at Akbar last year to enjoy the selections of popular disc jockeys. At the end of the event series last year, the promoters knew that it was time to move to a bigger, more spacious venue.
The promoters are encouraging patrons to place orders for the Appleton May Daze VIP access card, which is a one-time cost of $4,000 that includes weekly access for the cardholder and a guest, VIP parking, complimentary drinks on entry and discounts at Appleton May Daze partner stores in Kingston and Portmore.
Entry to the event on a weekly basis will be $800 with ladies entering free before 11 p.m. each night.
"Most promoters talk about value for money, or the new phrase is 'recession-proof price'. You can't get a better deal than what we're providing, and everyone who has ever been to a May Daze knows that they get more than what they pay for ... we provide a party experience that defines value for money," says Harris.Michael Lohan, father of troubled actress Lindsay Lohan, wants child protection services to visit the 23-year-old because he doesn't believe she is a fit guardian for her teenage sister Ali.
The troubled actress currently lives with her 16-year-old sister Ali, and their father is now keen for authorities to become involved as he doesn't believe Lindsay is fit to look after her sibling, and blames their mother, Dina for allowing the situation to occur.
Michael, who has repeatedly claimed his older daughter, is addicted to prescription drugs said that his ex-wife had no right whatsoever allowing Ali to stay with Lindsay.
Dina has been rumoured to be looking into filing a restraining order against her 50-year-old ex-husband, but he believes she has no grounds to do so and has urged his former spouse to agree to a meeting to discuss the welfare of the actress.
Olimatta Taal, publicist for Dancehall/Reggae artiste Sizzla has pushed aside a report which claims that the artiste has fled from Jamaica to live in Zimbabwe because of gun and murder related charges.
The report claims that Sizzla is on the run from Jamaican authorities for gun related and robbery cases in Kingston and is preparing to set up base in Zimbabwe after he was offered a farm.
Taal has since dismissed the claims and calls the article, irresponsible journalism.
Sizzla has been on tour in Africa since late February.
In addition to Zimbabwe, he has performed in other countries on the continent, including South Africa and Ghana. She said he might return to Jamaica in May before a performance in Trinidad.
Taal did admit that Sizzla was given land for his two performances in Zimbabwe for the country's 30th independence celebration. But the land, she said, was in no way related to politics.
Meanwhile, she said Sizzla has heard about the article but is not moved by it.

Jah Cure, born Siccature Alc**k, pleaded not guilty to ganja possession when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
The 32-year-old entertainer appeared in court on a charge of possession of ganja.
According to the allegations, about 11 a.m. last Thursday (April 22), police saw a white BMW being driven recklessly along Dunrobin Avenue, St Andrew, and it was signalled to stop.
The police alleged that while talking to the driver, the aroma inside the vehicle and the scent coming from the accused man's mouth was similar to the essence of marijuana.
The police told the court that he asked the accused if he had ganja in his possession and he was told "yes". The vehicle was searched and an ounce of ganja was reportedly found. The accused man was arrested and charged.
Jah Cure is known for songs such as Love Is, Reflection and his recent hit Call on me with Alison Hinds. He will return to court on May 6.Suspended for allowing people to see deejay
Rasbert Turner, Star Writer
Two policemen from the Portmore Police Station have been suspended and are being investigated after persons were reportedly unlawfully allowed to visit deejay Rodney 'Bounty Killer' Price, while he was at the station's lock-up.
Reports reaching THE STAR are that on Friday the lawmen, a corporal and a constable, were made aware that they were interdicted and placed on three quarters salary. The interdictions were printed in the police Force Orders, THE STAR learnt.
three bags of grocery
Senior officers in the St Catherine South Division yesterday confirmed the policemen's interdiction.
THE STAR's investigation revealed that the alleged visits occurred about 10 p.m. on April 10, which was not a visiting day. Information unearthed revealed that persons connected to the entertainer were caught in the visiting area with three bags of grocery.
It was further revealed that the corporal and the constable were on duty in that area and were asked to account for the foul-up.
Senior personnel at the station called in the Anti-Corruption Branch, which has since launched an investigation into the matter.
A week after Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn ruled that he be charged with murder, Constable Orlando Lamont attempted to flee the island on Saturday but was nabbed at the Sangster International Airport by his colleagues.
"He was heading to the United States, but little did he know that we had put a stop order on him at the two international airports prior to the ruling," Assistant Commissioner of Police Granville Gause told The Gleaner yesterday.
Lamont was implicated in the fatal shooting of 32-year-old Everton Parchment on April 3. Parchment, who resided in Arnett Gardens, was returning from a wedding reception with relatives and friends when they came upon a police spot check on Spanish Town Road, Kingston.
Explosion heard
Immediately after Parchment was signalled to stop by policemen, eyewitnesses said they heard an explosion. Parchment suffered a bullet wound to the neck.
As the Bureau of Special Investigations (BSI) commenced its probe into the matter, Lamont was interdicted by Police Commissioner Owen Ellington. On April 16, the DPP ruled that he be charged with murder.
He has been jailed since Saturday.
"He will be going before the court tomorrow (today)," Gause, the head of the BSI, said.
The constable, who is believed to be in his late 20s, is the third member of the police force to be charged with wounding or murder since the start of the year. The BSI confirmed that Constable Joseph Stanley was arrested and charged on January 15 in connection with the shooting of a woman at a bar on August 30 last year in St Andrew.
The third policeman, Constable Lawrence Burrell, was charged in connection with the tragic fire at the Armadale Juvenile Correctional Centre in St Ann.
KIEV, Ukraine (AFP) -- Ukraine's parliament erupted into chaos yesterday as deputies scuffled and hurled smoke bombs during a tumultuous session that ratified a bitterly contested deal with Russia extending a naval base lease.
Despite the extraordinary scenes that saw parliament --the Verkhovna Rada -- filled with smoke, lawmakers ratified the deal to extend the stay of the Russian Black Sea fleet until at least 2042, denounced by the opposition as a sell-out for Ukraine.
The uproar started when the parliament speaker, Volodymr Lytvyn, was pelted with a volley of a dozen eggs, forcing him to duck for cover behind black umbrellas held by two aides.Several smoke bombs were thrown, apparently by pro-Western opposition deputies, filling the chamber with smoke. Some deputies covered their faces or held handkerchiefs to their noses as alarms sounded.
A fistfight broke out on the deputies' benches and one lawmaker was seen thumping a colleague on the head. Another gripped a fellow deputy in a headlock as others piled in with eager punches.
Deputies also started fighting over a massive Ukrainian flag in the middle of the chamber, twisting and distorting the yellow and blue banner as smoke kept billowing.
Andriy Shevchenko, a member of parliament from the bloc headed by former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, acknowledged that the smoke bombs were thrown by "our deputies".
But he called the action justified. "History will be our judge," Shevchenko said. "In principle, the mood was to use all means possible short of guns."
Amid the chaos, some deputies tried to push on with business and give their floor speeches as if nothing extraordinary was taking place.
While some shouted "Shame, Shame!" the parliament ratified the pact with Moscow, 236 lawmakers voting in favour of the deal in the 450 seat chamber.
"Neither smoke bombs, egg-throwing, nor fighting is going to prevent the majority from taking its decisions," said Prime Minister Mykola Azarov after the session.
Concerns have been expressed by a number of people about the large number of sexually explicit materials available to children on the streets.
The problem THE STAR learnt is primarily caused by persons who sell DVDs with sexual photos on them, having no regards to whom the items are being sold.
"Can you imaging my six-year-old daughter telling me that she sees vagina and penis at a vendor place in Spanish Town?" a concerned mother said.
It is not unusual to hear these types of comments from residents. "I am convinced something needs to be done. Daily mi just observe children viewing the different sex movies on display, for sale," a teacher told THE STAR.
While many wonder if there are laws against the practice, one vigilant policeman from the Spanish Town Police station confirms the illegality.
"Of course, person who endanger children by exposing them to moral danger like the sex shows can be prosecuted under the Child Care and Protection Act," Detective Corporal Kirk Roache said.
illegal selling
He added that the police need the support of other agencies to deal with the illegal selling of the discs and other material of a sexual nature, especially when it is being sold to minors.
If a person selling illegal, sexually explicit DVDs is convicted for breaches of the Copyright Act, he/she can be fined up to $100,000 for each disc.
Meanwhile, at least one vendor told THE STAR that while the sales are illegal it is a way of making a living.A 15-year-old boy is now in police custody following the raping of a woman and her teenage daughter in St Catherine on Wednesday.
The boy, who police believe is a serial rapist, was reportedly held after he returned to the woman's house for an item he had left behind after sexually abusing the females.
investigations
"He was wearing a cap and left it behind. When he went and retrieved it, he was spotted by an alert individual who alerted the police," a policeman told THE STAR yesterday.
Police say investigations have so far revealed that the troubled teen has been carrying out acts of rape from age 12. "He is now getting more daring in his crime, so it is good we caught him. He was also reporting to the police for a similar case and should not be in the community," the policeman confirmed.
Reports reaching The Star are that on Wednesday about 10 p.m. the police were summoned to the St Catherine community where the mother and daughter live, following the reported rape. Upon the arrival of the police, the teenager was spotted by the lawmen and was held.
Police said that in addition to the sexual offences the youth will also answer to robbery charges.A man who pleaded guilty to punching his mother in the mouth, will spend the next three months in jail for the act.
Linval Johnson pleaded guilty to wounding his mother before Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
The court was told that on the day in question, the accused and his mother had an argument. It is alleged that she tried to hold on to him during the dispute, but he punched her in the mouth, sending her to the ground.
When the accused was asked by RM Pusey if there was any reason why he should not go to jail, he said "no." When he was asked how much time he planned to spend in jail, he simply uttered a simple "no time."
Upon hearing this, RM Pusey immediately sentenced the accused man to three months' imprisonment at hard labour. He was also ordered to have his fingerprints taken.
A 26-year-old patient of the Bellevue Hospital who slashed the tyres of a truck at a stop light, was brought before the court yesterday.
The accused man, Kadean Henry, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court to answer to charges of malicious destruction of property.
He pleaded guilty to the charges and had his bail extended until April 29. Henry is said to be a repeat offender and suffers from the mental illness, psychosis, for which he has been receiving treatment at the Bellevue Hospital.
On April 10, Henry was arrested by the police after he slashed the tyres of a J. Wray and Nephew truck which stopped at the intersection of Half-Way Tree Road and Balmoral Avenue.
The driver of the truck stated that while he waited for the light to change, he saw a man approaching the rear of the vehicle. Shortly after, an explosion was heard and Henry was seen running away with a knife in his hand. He was chased and later apprehended by the police and onlookers.
Henry defended himself by informing the court that he takes his medication irregularly and had not taken it on the day of the incident. His sister pleaded his case and told the court that she had asked the hospital to substitute her brother's oral medication with daily injections instead. She said that such a change would ensure that he receives his medication regularly.
A new mention date was set in the case because the complainant was not present in court to provide an estimate of the damages incurred.
A pastor and another man are now before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court after being accused of conspiring to export 4.5kg (10lb) of ganja to Trinidad and Tobago.
Pastor Thomas Pearson and his co-accused Sanguanetti Bryan, are before the court on ganja charges. Pearson was not brought before the court yesterday, but Bryan was remanded. They return on Friday.
It is alleged that Pearson from Stony Hill, St.Andrew, was preparing to board a flight to Trinidad when he was stopped and searched by airport security. It is alleged that the security officials detected a strange bulge and after further searching, four rectangular parcels containing compressed ganja were found strapped to both his thighs.
custody
It is alleged that under caution, Pearson told police that he would cooperate with them. It is further alleged that while he was in police custody, Pearson received a call from Bryan, who had reportedly taken him to the airport. It is also alleged that Bryan asked the accused if everything was going well and if he had made it through .
Pearson informed Bryan that he had missed his flight and both made arrangements to meet. The investigating officer told the court that Bryan fled when he saw the police, however, his car was later intercepted after the police got the license plate number from Pearson.
When the matter was mentioned in court yesterday, Bryan's lawyer said all his client was guilty of is giving Pearson a ride. He said because of Pearson's occupation his client had no reasons not to trust him.
The police, however, allege that Bryan was very aware of the plan to export the ganja.
Facing sexual charges involving a minor
Livern Barrett, Star Writer
A prominent female banker from one of the island's top financial institutions is now in police custody facing disturbing sexual charges involving a minor, THE STAR understands.
Police sources disclosed that the banker was picked up at her St Andrew home on Sunday by the Duhaney Park police and will be questioned today.
One investigator told THE STAR that she will be interviewed in the presence of her lawyer before she is formally arrested and charged for sexual offences involving a minor, cruelty to a minor and failure to report a crime against a minor.
confirmed report
When contacted, head of the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA), Deputy Superintendent Herfa Beckford, confirmed the report, but refused to give details.
"I will not divulge any information," she insisted.
However, DSP Beckford pointed parents and guardians to the Child Care and Protection Act, particularly Section six , which deals with failure to report a crime against a child "or even suspicion" that a child is being abused.
She said CISOCA will ensure that "people face the consequences when they fail to make a report."
Beckford said anyone found guilty of an offence under this Act can be fined up to $500,000 or spend six months in jail or both.
A British national was sentenced on drug charges in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Gabriel Genesis, 42, from Haddersfield, West Yorkshire in England, pleaded guilty to possession, dealing and attempting to export 37 pounds of ganja.
Allegations are that about 4:05 p.m. on March 13, Genesis was about to board a British Airways flight to Manchester, England. His suitcase was searched and 13 packages containing ganja were found. He was later charged.
Adrian Dayes, Genesis' lawyer, told Resident Magistrate Vivienne Harris that his client had limited culpability in the matter, as in April 2009, while visiting with relatives, he met individuals who promised him connections to a popular music studio.
Dayes said Genesis left his luggage with these individuals and had no agreement to transport any narcotics to England. Asking for leniency, he said Genesis had neither criminal character nor record.
Genesis was fined $10,000 or 30 days for possession, $70,000 or 30 days for dealing, and $150,000 or three months for attempted export ganja, plus a mandatory nine-month imprisonment.
With the onslaught on dancehall from all angles both international and locally, Magnum Kings and Queens has emerged as a shining light.
Showers of blessing had postponed the April 17 staging of Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall but last Saturday's show (April 24) at Weekenz Bar and Bistro made up for the absence of the show.
With the twists and turns of the competition, the immense talent showcased on the Magnum stage and the fact that any contestant is at risk of going home, the competition is always exciting and has viewers gripped from start to finish.
Jamaica has supported Magnum Kings and Queens over the last three seasons and Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall is still a hit! One patron puts it aptly: "Every week a jus Magnum. Mi caan miss it. Tanto Blacks have mi, Chozenn and Juggla have di place a way and di woman dem a do dem ting; dis a di biggest ting fi dancehall right now."
beacon of hope
Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall has emerged as a beacon of hope showing that real authentic dancehall can be palatable to all those who love talent and music. So says executive producer for the show, Mark Kenny.
"What we have tried to do this year is improve the quality of the product. The contestants know that they are an example and the whole world is watching so they have to act accordingly."
Mark Kenny maintained that the reason the show is such a big hit is that it appeals to the fundamental tenets that make dancehall what it is: "The show is a combination of all that is good in dancehall, all the things that have made the world gravitate to the genre all these decades. There is fashion, comedy, wicked lyrics, clashing and swagga, all done in a clean and authentic manner. And, importantly, original music works all the time."
The excitement is not diminished as every week each contestant tries to outd o the other. There is now a 'backchat' between Chozenn, Tanto Blacks and Juggla. These artistes have shown that throwing words can be done in a wholesome way with lyrics that could stand up on any dancehall stage, devastating their opponent.
Press Fyah also brings another aspect of dancehall to the Magnum stage and has shown that positive music can move a crowd and has received numerous forwards at Weekenz for his heart-tugging lyrics and gritty artistry.
The ladies are not to be outdone as Mysterious and Reggae Queen have maintained a level of lyrical dexterity that mirrors some of the best female protagonists on the dancehall's big stage. The ladies too have thrown words at each other and shown that there is a place for women in the genre, a place they have claimed as they seek to be the inheritors of the great legacy that has been created by the likes of Lady Saw, Tanya Stephens, Ce'Cile and other international dancehall stars.
major hit
Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall judge and veteran dancehall producer, Scatta Burrell, believes that the competition continues to be a major hit because it resonates with a people who yearn for authentic clean lyrics that they can rock to and rail for.
"The show shows that you don't have to be dirty to be wicked and I believe that is what has made the show so popular on the streets. You can't walk through Half-Way Tree and not hear someone talking about their favourite contestant and sometimes even school kids are singing the songs. This is what dancehall is about, connecting with the people on the street and I am happy that our decision to only allow clean authentic lyrics mixed with the amazing talent of Jamaicans is paying off. The people have spoken, Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall is still a hit!"
With only a few weeks left before the crowning of the 2010 Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall, and with the shock exit of Gibralta, it is now clear that anyone can go home. So vote now and vote plenty. Watch the show onTVJ every Saturday night at 9:30 p.m. and see why Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall is still a hit.
'Every week a jus Magnum. Mi caan miss it ... dis a di biggest ting fi dancehall right now.'
No one knows better than those in the music industry how difficult and sometimes unrewarding musicdistribution can be, but those of 21st/Hapilos have found another way to intensify dancehall/reggae distribution worldwide while having it pay off for local producers - that of digital distribution.
Digital distribution which entails selling and distributing songs online is nothing new, but ace digital music marketer, Johnny Wonder, executive vice-president of the US/Jamaican company, explains how fulfilling and rewarding the service is for producers and artistes.
File-Producer Sean Reid
"Promoting the songs for sale online is in an effort to drive revenue for those in the industry. Digital distribution is both cheaper and more accessible to fans overseas; it's something we stand to gain a lot from," he said.
hot rhythm
Among the productions being distributed by 21st/Hapilos are the DNA rhythm produced by TJ of TJ Records; the Remedy rhythm and Chan Dizzy's single, Go Hard An' Done, both produced by Russian of the Head Concussion Camp; CR203 and Adijahiem/NotNice Records' Mad Collab rhythm featuring Vybz Kartel, Popcaan and Gaza Slim's hit, Clarks; John John's Zion Gate rhythm featuring Tarrus Riley and Sizzla Kalonji; Romeich Records' Bank In A Mi Pocket rhythm which features, Bank In A Mi Pocket by Versatile, in addition to a plethora of rhythm productions.
File-Demarco
Since the productions have been released for sale online, they have shown consistent growth, and Wonder and others at 21st/ Hapilos are confident that with further promotion of the productions in the local and international markets the sales will continue to rise, thus further benefitting reggae/dancehall producers and artistes.
The company's upcoming releases include Seanizzle's Survival Mode, Delly Ranx's Iron Fist rhythm, Dynasty's Crown H.I.M rhythm and G-Whizz's single, Tomorrow, produced by TJ Records and True Friend by Demarco, produced by Arif Cooper, which are also expected to be heavy-hitters in the digital arena.

Popular reggae artiste Chuck Fenda, aka The Living Fire, says he is surprised with the reactions he has been getting from fans about his single Real Man, which has so far sparked a mixture of negative and positive feedbacks.
The veteran act, born Leshorn Whitehead, recorded and released the song on Donovan Germain's PenthouseRecords music label four weeks ago, but the ratio of negative comments generated on the popular Internet website Facebook, has caused the singer to become concerned.
In the song Fenda speaks passionately on behalf of women who are not treated specially by their men. He says: "Girl yuh need a good man in your life ... yuh nuh wah nuh man fi a mek yuh cry, nuh man fi come a tell yuh lie. Dis a weh yuh want, attention girl dem deh things mek yuh feel alright."
"Him put ring pon yuh finger and then park yuh like car, a run back a deejay like him a star and anytime yuh talk, him wah fi turn it inna war. A dem thing deh mek unuh a drift weh suh far."
However, the words seem to have sparked the outrage of several men as the song continues to get increasing public attention.
"From mi do the song people a lef message pon mi Facebook page and things. A lot of male fans sad about it," said Fenda via telephone.
negative comments
He also said that he is puzzled by the negative comments, which have been posted on the singer's Facebookpage. For him, the song was derived from listening to countless females complaining on streets about the attention they get from their partners.
"It's (Real Man) just a natural inspiration, and to what certain females talk about. Di females dem love it and mi have male fans who a say 'deejay mi like it, but anuh yuh fi do that' ... but it's really a soul-searching song, which a couple can listen and learn deeply from," he added.
This is not the first time since the experienced reggae singer became popular that he has come under public pressure as one of his previous hits, Gash Dem and Light Dem also had strong backlash, and was even banned by some radio stations.
Comments like, "Mi cah rate Chuck Fender fi dah one yah" and "Deejay wah kind of fool fool song dis?" have surfaced on the singer's Facebook home page, but Fenda has come out asking for fans not to take it so personal.
"Dem tek it too personal, like say it a mash up dem relationship," he said.
There are also certain comments threatening the singer. "Today mi see a man say, mi cyah perform dah song yah pon stage and all dem things deh ... wi tek it serious yes, but a we govern di streets," he added.
Chuck Fenda said that he hasn't made any official report to the police and if Real Man is controversial, the release of his upcoming single Amardale Fire will have an even greater impact.
